Thankyou to Luckygirl and others who have said what I was about to. As a school gov I know that ‘my’ school thought they had a most recent keyworkers list- updated in October in order to have the most recent information ready if needed.
Having asked parents again yesterday just to check the info was still correct the numbers seem to have increased dramatically which has all kinds of implications re staffing/ use of space etc which hadn’t been required last year in Spring/early Summer. This has created yet more unexpected work for all as they try to find a way forward- and they were, or thought they were, comparatively organised and ready!
It will settle down, it will become routine- the schools will not close, they never did apart from the summer break ( when they were on their knees with tiredness as most teachers worked through the Easter and Spring half terms) which they needed.

Perhaps all schools could have had 'the first day' as an inset day just in case of such as this happening? Scotland had 4th jan as an 'extra' days holiday in lieu of 2nd jan- (its marked on new 2021 calendar) so all the Scottish kids wont have had to go through all that stupidity for one day- they were safe at home still!

Let's all be honest! I've more or less been in a self imposed lock down since this started. Just go out when it's essential. I wouldn't wait for any politician to 'impose' this restriction. Neither would I like their job.

And again- WHY are we letting Scotland, N.Ireland and Wales all act independantly when we are SUPPOSED to be a UNITED KINGDOM? It would seem we are NOT united anymore, at all- so why pretend we are- the Queen needs to have some backbone and either insist we all act AS ONE- or drop the pretence and announce the others are separate individual countries- and set them free to be governed/ruled as such, with their OWN ruler! She may as well just say that she's the Queen of just England- and England only! ??

Rosina, the second wave was known about during the first wave. Made perfect, scientific sense. I guess the govt was also occupied by Brexit and green energy, but still no excuse to play with lives. Saetana, I heard the other day that children are forgetting how to use a knife and fork because of school closures. This sounds unbelievable, but I can believe it (I work in a school). It appears some don't learn any life skills at home at all never mind basic literacy and numeracy help.

What we need is a Government with a backbone not the spineless lot in charge now, trouble is there is no one I can think of who fits the bill. Bet I get a slap for saying that !!

Nannan2 I think I’m right in saying it was already decided by the Scottish govt prior to Christmas that the holiday period would be extended till Jan 11th. Even then the schools would remain closed and pupils would have online learning until at least Jan 18th.

Then Nicola Sturgeon announced yesterday afternoon the schools will remain closed till Feb.

Also- as Boris keeps waiting to see what Nicola Sturgeon is doing first then copying her- we may as well put her in charge of whole of UK then as she does seem to have more common sense than he does tbf! (Cause she's a woman probably)?

GNW- if thats what Scotland had in place then why didnt Boris follow suit then? He seems to copy all that Nicola does so why not arrange close of schools back then?The mans an idiot! Many UK schools had 04/01 as an inset day so not all children were in school for just one day.

Nicola Sturgeon has always had her broadcast earlier than the PM, doesn’t necessarily mean BJ is copying her strategy, just means she broadcasts hers first!

I'd love for those criticising the government to be in their position for a few days - no-one is doubting that decisions in this situation are difficult. But every time something needs doing they are late, late, late. And every time they are late people die.

And BJ is always making sweeping statements - "best track and trace system", "schools are safe" etc. etc. and everyone knows they are lies.

Because sadly some of us mere normal folk see them all the time- at school gates, near the shops, in the streets,(back when we had real- life) the commoners have to live alongside these people- we ALL know they exist- the lazy ones who cant be bothered to get out of their pyjamas to drop the kids at school, let alone educate them at home! DONT pretend they dont exist! We real mums have seen them! And as for HM the Queen, im not saying make a political decision im saying she needs to either put ONE person in charge at head of All the government-(of ALL four countries) or she needs to stand down then- (what's point of being a ruler if you can't make your own countries decisions?and no i don't think Charles should be in charge either- it should be handed to William now as he is a younger more 'in touch' member of a modern society. The 'constitution' of which you speak no longer exists.

The people who are keeping their children in school tend to be professionals.

And you clearly have no idea what the name Karen means. In the UK we haven't really adopted this which I'm pleased about but in USA a Karen is a woman who has means and money and clout. And they tend to think they're better than anyone else.

And they are extremely judgmental about people they think are beneath them

On their knees with tiredness? Needing a break at Easter and Spring half terms?

Perhaps they should be thankful that they are not on the frontline with hospital staff who really are tired and many at near breaking point but do not have the luxury of any kind of break and just keep on working to care for us when we need them.

Am hearing of more and more of my friends, school staff, testing positive for the virus, my youngest son, a healthy 36year old coughing his lungs up, my husband back shielding, my daughter, a GP, seeing younger and younger patients in the corona virus clincs, have heard of 3people I know that died over the Christmas period- BIT LATE TO LOCKDOWN. Too slow again, however we are where we are and critical to do what we all can to slow the spread.

I must confess to putting my coat over my pyjamas and driving one child to school, letting them out in the teachers car park (not allowed) , whilst having a 3 week old baby screaming in its car seat.

In returning home feeding baby whilst on the phone chasing you payments due to our SME.......but hey ho if you feel the need to judge ????

As a parent concerned about my own youngest child's education, (17 now, still in college) Yet EVEN MORE concerned for his health and safety- ive got every right to be judgemental- the lazy parents who insisted on keeping educational institutions open are (mostly) the ones who could not be bothered to have to educate their own children- who kept bleating on last time (in march- may last year) about having to be expected to do so- about how they 'aren't teachers' (no because they had not enough education themselves) about how they were all cooped up in the house together- about how 'hard' it all was- these were the ones who sent the kids back to school not knowing how to use a knife& fork, not knowing how to do real schoolwork- we real concerned parents know they do exist! I have always been a champion of my childrens education but i am also very concerned for my sons health/safety as he has underlying health issues. For me that must be top priority.And for any concerned parent, wouldn't their child's life be most important.Not just getting them out from under their feet for a few hours.
