Mine is All things bright and beautiful, I’ve loved this since very young,

Bathsheba Sat 30-Jan-21 19:13:33

If we're talking hymns sung in school or church, then I'd choose Soul of my Saviour, Faith of my Fathers, Morning has Broken, and the 23rd Psalm

But in a break from the usual here, the following have to be my absolute favourites:

Panis Angelicus
Ave Verum Corpus
Laudate Dominum
Agnus Dei - (Samuel Barber)

BlueSky Sat 30-Jan-21 20:46:06

How Great Thou Are and Amazing Grace, even though I’m not religious.

Grandma70s Sat 30-Jan-21 20:54:24

I have a lot of favourites, but I think Morning Has Broken comes top. It made me feel so happy when I sang it as a child, I’ve always been a morning person!

Callistemon Sat 30-Jan-21 20:55:03

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
Forgive our Foolish Ways

lemongrove Sat 30-Jan-21 20:56:44

Thanks Bellanonna and Spinnaker it’s a lovely hymn, both the music and the words.

lemongrove Sat 30-Jan-21 20:58:00

Is that one or two hymns Callistemon ? ?

storynanny Sat 30-Jan-21 20:59:22

Oh Jesus I have promised ( newer tune)
Thank you for waking me this morning
The second song I can remember a man with a guitar coming to my infant school and singing it to us as a newly written song ( 1961/2/3?)
I sat on a bench in the school hall and loved it
Have taught it to every class I’ve ever had and they have all loved it too!

Forth in Thy Name O Lord I go...my school hymn and my prayer for the day.

NotTooOld Sat 30-Jan-21 22:40:29

Immortal, Invisible and The Day Thou Gavest.
I find most hymns go too high for me. I don't have a good singing voice anyway (some may say terrible) but the two above have good tunes and I can actually sing them.

I like most of these hymns but 'Abide with Me' is one which really tugs at my heart.
And this one: ka waiata ki a Maria

I remember 'One more step along the world I go' from way, way back - lovely.

And the very touching 'Jesus Blood Never Fails Me' the story of how this came about is so moving.

I love many of the above. Particular favourites are How great they art, Shine Jesus Shine and I will Follow Him.

nanna8 Sun 31-Jan-21 07:30:07

It is well with my soul
Nearer my God to thee
Revive us Again
I love the old hymns and the history of the people who wrote them.

Ashcombe Sun 31-Jan-21 07:42:28

Dorsetcupcake61: I’m due to play “Shine, Jesus, Shine” today at 0930 in our church so that will be dedicated to you. No singing allowed, sadly!

I have too many favourites to list here, after years of playing for school assemblies and church services. “The Servant King” and “Here I Am, Lord” are two of many.

I also discovered this recently which is very appropriate for these troubled times.

Nanna8: I’ve just read your post so you will enjoy the clip!

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 31-Jan-21 07:51:32

Thankyou Ashcombe ?. I loved the clip to.?

Dorsetcupcake61 Sun 31-Jan-21 08:16:22

Ashcombe I have decided at 9.30 I shall sing along. Not quite the same but will be fun. !

Ashcombe Sun 31-Jan-21 08:24:39

Thank you, Dorsetcupcake61. Wonderful idea!

nanna8 Sun 31-Jan-21 08:41:00

Thanks for that Ashcombe , thoroughly enjoyed it and will send it to a few friends. ?

We are allowed to sing in church but with masks on and it is not the same. Comes over rather muffled. The lead singer at the front doesn’t have to wear one, though and he is a good singer.

Grandma70s Sun 31-Jan-21 08:44:04

I also love “We plough the fields and scatter/ The good seed on the land”, because it reminds me of harvest festivals which I have always loved. It makes me think of Michaelmas daisies and apples, and going back to school in September. (I liked going back to school.)

Trisha57 Sun 31-Jan-21 08:50:17

Cwm Rhondda, Glad that I Live am I.

Mollygo Sun 31-Jan-21 09:16:23

Ave Verum Corpus (learnt at school and I still know the words)
Be still my soul
Dorsetcupcake Shine Jesus Shine and
Like a candle flame -Graham Kendrick writes such lovely hymns.

muppett1 Sun 31-Jan-21 09:28:39

Be still

Been my favourite for a time. We had it as the first hymn at our wedding 4 years ago.

Witzend Sun 31-Jan-21 09:31:25

Ditto to ‘Dear Lord and Father of Mankind’ - always loved that one.
Abide With Me.
The Day Thou Gavest Lord Hath Ended

And especially, ‘Eternal Father Strong To Save’ (For Those in Peril On The Sea) - it was my father’s favourite - he spent 2 years on the very perilous North Atlantic convoys during WW2 and it was sung at his funeral.

I’m not at all religious and except for weddings and funerals haven’t been to church in ages, but if I had a nice, cosy old C of E close by, and could be sure of my favourite hymns coming up, I think I could almost be persuaded...

Gwyneth Sun 31-Jan-21 09:38:05

Many of those already mentioned but my all time favourite is ‘Morning has broken’. It’s so uplifting.
