The changing face of Gransnet?

I am a 'lockdown-joiner' to this forum, welcoming the opportunity join in with others who are similarly 'shut inside'.

I have been wondering whether people have found that the site has changed in any way over the last year?

Themes/quantity of posts/membership/patience/tolerance?

Just curious!

Callistemon Sun 31-Jan-21 16:46:15

Galaxy Gransnet used to be what was termed a 'lightly moderated site' and it appeared to work well.

Obviously there should be some rules and guidelines and any posts which are racist, anti-religion or deliberately make personal attacks on another poster should be deleted but some of the rules lately seem to have been made on the hoof. It also seems as if the moderators are confused as to what constitutes a racist post or a deliberate personal attack on a poster.
Questioning a poster's assertions is not, as far as I know, against the rules.

Lucca Sun 31-Jan-21 16:46:40

biba70

and saying the above, on a repeated basis, is discriminatory and 'racist' yes.

Saying what Biba, “thin dog “ ??

Galaxy Sun 31-Jan-21 16:49:05

Or is it that moderators have a different view of racism than some people using the site.

Lisagran Sun 31-Jan-21 16:56:16

Thank you, biba70. I have been an occasional poster for some time, with more time spent on here this past year due to the lockdowns, but I rarely get drawn in to the intrigues that seem to be talked about. I dislike unpleasantness.

All I would say, in response to your comment at 16.41, is that this thread has nothing to do with governments of any nationality, has it? I thought GNers were trying to discuss this site and its’ seemingly unfair rules?

janeainsworth Sun 31-Jan-21 16:56:52

So if you truly did not mean to be unpleasant....... then I apologise, sincerely. Unfortunately, as has been shown often recently, this is usually not the case

I think that is what is usually termed a grudging apology, Biba.
Lisa was very gracious in her apology to you.
What a pity you couldn’t reciprocate.

grannysyb Sun 31-Jan-21 16:59:45

I am absolutely gobsmacked that EV, Charley and rising from the ashes are on final warnings or have disappeared as well the owner of the thin dog. I have disagreed with some people on here from time to time but never been reported. Surely the moderators realise that there appear to be a one or two people who don't like their views being criticised. What's interesting is the lack of response from GN.

Kalu Sun 31-Jan-21 17:00:31

Well, that was quite a long winded, eventual apology biba

Not clear if it hit the mark of a sincere apology I have to say.

Lucca Sun 31-Jan-21 17:02:00

Maybe .....it’s time for some chains and railings

ixion Sun 31-Jan-21 17:07:48

Do you think Moderators work on their own, especially at weekends?
Perhaps, guessing here, today's M. is waiting for their routine video conference tomorrow to discuss responses?

Fennel Sun 31-Jan-21 17:10:41

I've noticed before that provocotive posts tend to crop up at the weekend, when the mods are having a break. So maybe the one left on her own tends to be extra cautious.
Another point - there have been more daily posts in the last few weeks, 140+ rather than 120+.

Doodle Sun 31-Jan-21 17:17:59

We obviously need GNHQ to watch over the site. We often get some very strange posters who seem to get in from time to time and post dozens of unpleasant threads. We also get advertising threads which need deleting.
Sometimes things are said that shouldn’t be an those need deleting but I think a life ban is way to far. Particularly when no one can see the rules that GNHQ seem to be working by at the moment.

GNHQ, if you are reading this, please will you take serious note of the fact that many of us do not want life bans for people. Surely a short suspension should be the maximum penalty for someone

So serious question GNHQ. Will you please lift the life time bans and take an approach more agreeable to us the members?

Firecracker123 Sun 31-Jan-21 17:18:15

I had a post deleted yesterday but received no email only realised it was deleted looking back on the thread. I find it amusing. My view is that there are some very petty posters who keep reporting people, like teachers pet at school telling tales to the teacher.

Doodle Sun 31-Jan-21 17:18:56

Lucca grin (may I bring packed lunch please)

Firecracker123 Sun 31-Jan-21 17:19:47

I think GNHQ should tell you who reported you.

Galaxy Sun 31-Jan-21 17:21:52

Aaargh you see this is the problem. I am not sure what I feel about lifetime bans being lifted. It is usually not as simple as that and certainly cant be decided on this thread. Someone continually posts conspiracy theories about covid for example. Are they ok to return?

dragonfly46 Sun 31-Jan-21 17:28:13

Galaxy surely we are old enough and wise enough to decide ourselves which posts to believe or not.
There should be no such thing as a lifetime ban except those who are deliberately targeting certain posters in order to get them banned.

Chewbacca Sun 31-Jan-21 17:28:50

Yes! They don't have the balls to actually post on the thread that they don't agree with something and why; they just hit the report button and retreat like the cowards they are. No wonder they're so disliked by so many.

Doodle Sun 31-Jan-21 17:29:24

If people continually post conspiracy theories about COVID are they not just stating their point of view? I must add I completely disagree with those theories by the way.

Are these the people who have been having life bans though?

Again, if the posts are that bad then they could be deleted and the posters advised to stop or be suspended.

If a lifetime ban robs us of a person like the thin dog lady then I say the life bans are wrong. The thin dog lady has helped so many on GN with her kindness and advice for those bereaved. She’s lifted so many people’s spirits with her wonderful humour and poems. Perhaps she has offended some, I don’t know but let’s face it we all offend people some times and many times without realising it.

If a person like the thin dog lady or charleygirl or EV can face this ban I cannot see a justifiable reason for it.

cornishpatsy Sun 31-Jan-21 17:30:25

I suppose you cannot please everybody, some want a stricter moderation some no moderation.

As for banning, people have left and come back with a different name therefor banning does not really work anyway.

Blossoming Sun 31-Jan-21 17:34:08

The penny just dropped about the thin dog (I’m a bit slow sometimes!) and I’m astounded.

Galaxy Sun 31-Jan-21 17:38:32

It's not really whether you are old or wise enough though is it. If someone continually posts racist comments for example then some people will find it impossible to use the site. Those people may be vulnerable and isolated, do they not deserve access to the site. I am pretty much a believer in unfettered free speech (I am very uncomfortable with owners of social media sites having the power to ban people, even repugnant people like trump) I think no one should hold that level of power, but that's not the situation we are currently in. Free speech is unbelievably complex.

janeainsworth Sun 31-Jan-21 17:39:21

If people continually post conspiracy theories about COVID are they not just stating their point of view?

Not always. Doodle. Last week someone posted a link to a long video that was full of crazy theories which I won’t repeat, & I think it was quite right that it was deleted.
There are differences of opinion and there is dangerous nonsense.

BlueBelle Sun 31-Jan-21 17:44:34

I think if you read through all 300 + posts there are only 2 posters in agreement or nearly in agreement with strict moderating
Not exactly a landslide

Chewbacca Sun 31-Jan-21 17:47:48

I think most sane people abhor racism in any form Galaxy and to be fair, I can't say that I've seen any serious or recent incidences of that nature on GN. The vast majority of posters deplored the Trump for that very reason and were very vocal in saying so. All racists posts should be reported and deleted because of their corrosive content. But the members of GN who have been suspended, deleted or banned haven, as far as I'm aware, been punished for racist posts. The problem seems to be, as has been demonstrated on this thread today, that some posters appear to follow their victim around from thread to thread, provoking them until they get a response and then hit the report button when they've provoked a reaction. It's been noticed by so many people and causes a great deal of resentment when it's the victim that gets punished.
