The changing face of Gransnet?

(1001 Posts)

I am a 'lockdown-joiner' to this forum, welcoming the opportunity join in with others who are similarly 'shut inside'.

I have been wondering whether people have found that the site has changed in any way over the last year?

Themes/quantity of posts/membership/patience/tolerance?

Just curious!

Galaxy

So racist posts should stay up for example.

No, because that is against guidelines and is quite clear.

Galaxy Sun 31-Jan-21 16:01:52

I have seen quite a lot of racist posts. I dont actually believe any one individual should control a social media site ,but that's not where we are at the minute. You cant just let people sort it out themselves, racism, homophobia etc, threats, libel it just goes on and on.

Yes she is. And we are all very happy. Well not everyone ( tapsnose) ?

Galaxy Sun 31-Jan-21 16:04:04

I bloody hope Justine grants me immunity from deletions after the job I am doing here defending them. smile

Casdon Sun 31-Jan-21 16:04:15

Racist posts are always unacceptable in my view Galaxy, as are posts which hound members because they put forward an ‘unpopular’ perspective on whatever the item under discussion is.

The site does need moderating because some discussions do get out of hand, and not everybody engages their brain before they fire off missives, which can come across very ‘holier than thou’, or very rude and bullying -there are some keyboard warriors on here. I do think the moderators should provide more information when posts transgress the rules, an explanation would go a long way.

Chewbacca Sun 31-Jan-21 16:11:31

Well it looks as though there will be at least one person hitting the report button today.

Splendid grin.

Charleygirl5 Sun 31-Jan-21 16:15:35

Chewbacca that went through my mind also because she had been conspicuous by her absence.

trisher Sun 31-Jan-21 16:19:25

I think there is a real problem with working out the details of what is acceptable and what should be deleted. Some people post racist views without realising it, and for those people it would be good to leave the post and actually explain the racism. As it is I do wonder about the moderators' abilities. I think perhaps they just delete things on a safety first basis. I suppose it's difficult to explain when you've just done it because it's safer.

Doodledog Sun 31-Jan-21 16:21:37

My message a few posts up has been deleted, so there is moderation going on today.

janeainsworth Sun 31-Jan-21 16:23:04

Of course racist posts should be deleted. No decent person would argue with that.

However, there’s a difference between someone making a racist remark about a group of people not directly involved with the site, and a Gransnet member perceiving, and then complaining, that someone has made a racist remark about them, when clearly racism has nothing to do with it.

janeainsworth Sun 31-Jan-21 16:24:45

I can’t imagine what you said, Doodledog shockwink

Lisagran Sun 31-Jan-21 16:26:35

As it would seem there are moderators on duty, perhaps GNHQ could respond to some of the questions asked on this thread re confusion surrounding site rules?

Doodledog Sun 31-Jan-21 16:28:14

Nothing that most people wouldn't know anyway ?. Honestly, do GNHQ think we are all sweet little old ladies who don't know how things work?

kittylester Sun 31-Jan-21 16:32:23

Galaxy, if only we still had Justine (and the original cohort) still moderating they wouldn't need defending!

LauraNorder Sun 31-Jan-21 16:35:27

Wow.
I’m fully in agreement that the site seems to be unfairly and overly moderated
Charley, EV, slim but lovely dog lady and rising from the ashes are all funny, interesting and certainly not aggressive friends of us all.
Indefensible actions by GNHQ, their reasoning seems to have more holes than a chunk of emmental.

Well, I did see one post claiming that posters were being racist towards someone who said they were of Huguenot descent!

That is quite ridiculous; being of Huguenot descent myself (both sides of the family) I can categorically say it was utter nonsense to think that was racist.

LauraNorder Sun 31-Jan-21 16:38:45

My description of slim but lovely dog lady may cause her to titter. Would I be rude to say I meant slim but lovely dog belonging to lady who is lovely but may or may not be slim.

Casdon Sun 31-Jan-21 16:39:13

There was an appalling one yesterday though Callistemon referring back to the last war, so they do appear.

biba70 Sun 31-Jan-21 16:41:13

Lisagran, no you did not make a mistake. There are quite a few of us who live abroad, some in the USA, but mostly in Europe, France, Germany, Malta, Spain. Italy- and yes, me in Switzerland.

So if you truly did not mean to be unpleasant, and say, as many have before, again and again (and I am surprised if you did not notice, honestly)- that my living outside the UK at the moment, despite being British and spending all my adult life in the UK, means I do not have the right to contribute to discussions on the UK, or have an opinion- and dare I say, criticise this current Government ...

then I apologise, sincerely. Unfortunately, as has been shown often recently, this is usually not the case.

petra Sun 31-Jan-21 16:42:43

Janeainsworth
I think the thin dog was mentioned in the deleted post.
Pathetic ?

biba70 Sun 31-Jan-21 16:43:12

and saying the above, on a repeated basis, is discriminatory and 'racist' yes.

Chewbacca Sun 31-Jan-21 16:45:13

My message a few posts up has been deleted, so there is moderation going on today.

So it has*Doodledog*. Now I wonder who hit the report button on that? hmm what a coincidence

How anyone can feel justified in causing la dame au chien maigre to be banned is beyond me.
