TV turning on of it's own accord.

Has anyone experienced this, please?

Usually in the middle of the night, my tv starts making a horrible, really loud crackling noise, followed by a bright green 'interference' type effect onscreen.

It slowly clears, and on comes the tv.

Is this a sign that it's dangerously old and about to blow up?
Is it haunted? shock

Have a look at the settings , it may be that you have accidentally set it to come on at a certain time.

OH has an old laptop which sometimes comes on of it’s own accord. Usually BBC news. Also, the other night my son was woken by strange vibrating in the bathroom . I had set my toothbrush to recharge but it was obviously left turned on. Bizarre.

It could be something as simple as a partially stuck on/off button on the remote or the batteries in the remote are running low. These and several other possibilities listed here:

As the TV is old, it could be that the mainboard is faulty and needs replacing. Does any of this look and sound familar?

I used to be meticulous about unplugging mine overnight as it was said to be a possible fire hazard. I don’t do it now due back problems.

My son in law is a firefighter and as well as tv he unplugs every kitchen appliance overnight. Microwave, toaster, kettle, dishwasher, washing machine etc. He said he’s attended house fires too many times that have been traced to a home appliance.

I know he’s right but it’s annoying sharing holiday accommodation with him when you’re first up and switch the kettle on only to discover 10 mins later it’s turned off at the wall!

That's exactly it!!!
I haven't watched through to the part about fixing the main board yet.

I've had it all these years and only just worked out how to find a bit more info on programmes in the last 6 months.

Mainboards on eBay are priced between £30 and £50 so if you can find one for your TV and don't mind having a go at installing it yourself you may be able to eradicate the problem and extend the life of your set. Even if you pay someone to do it and they charge by time spent, it looks such a simple job that it should still cost less than a new TV.

Thanks ever so much.
I shall think about doing it myself (mine is a samsung too, just like in the video)

I really appreciate it. smile

We once heard a noise in the middle of the night and went downstairs to find the dog had turned on the TV and was watching a horror film.
