A true gentleman. God bless him and his family. Sad news today.

A wonderful man with a lovely family who inspired so many people to generously donate to his appeal.

The final amount raised vastly exceeded his original figure and that will be his lasting legacy.

How sad. He had a wonderful last few months. I hope his family are left to grieve in peace.

Very sad but what a legacy....????

HurdyGurdy Tue 02-Feb-21 18:54:41

Goodnight Sir Captain Tom. Rest in Peace.

What a wonderful final year he lived, packing so much into it, on top of an already packed life.

How cruel that the very illness that brought him to the world's attention, is the one that took him.

PippaZ Tue 02-Feb-21 18:58:14

Such a positive character just when we needed it. What a life and what a way to bring it to an amazing end.

I don’t know anything about him, other than what I’ve read in the media, but feel annoyed at people ( including Boris Johnson ) saying he raised money for the NHS. The NHS is not a charity, and Sir Tom raised money for charities which provided support for NHS staff and volunteers. I’m sure I read that the money had provided leisure facilities, rest rooms, ipads etc for front line staff. A good cause, but not funding for the NHS proper.

sodapop Tue 02-Feb-21 19:57:42

I think it was for the NHS by extension Daddima certainly nothing to be annoyed about I wouldn't have thought.
It's a shame to bring this sort of criticism to the last day of a kind man and true gentleman.

oliversnana Tue 02-Feb-21 20:03:03

I agree a hero to the end RIP

Daddima Tue 02-Feb-21 20:05:29

Sodapop, I am not criticising him, and not at all annoyed by what he did. It’s merely the acceptance that our NHS could be funded by private individuals, as that is how it is being reported in many places.
