A true gentleman. God bless him and his family. Sad news today.

catta5 Wed 03-Feb-21 10:46:16

Yes sad news but can I ask/say how comes he was able to go on holiday over Christmas and how was his family allowed to be with him at the end when so many are denied this this at the end of their loved ones life

Nannan2 Wed 03-Feb-21 10:55:21

I know, such sad sad news, after he had done so much to help, its a real kick in the teeth for him from this bl**dy virus! I hope his family can take comfort from his huge achievement, and his inspiration.RIP sir Tom.A great Captain, and a great man thanks

Sir Tom emerged to capture the nation's attention and admiration at precisely the right time - he raised the profile of our NHS when it was needed and with his own body and determination he battled to raise money - he was truly inspirational and leaves a wonderful legacy. May he rest in peace.

RIP Captain Sir Tom Moore. You were an inspiration and a true gentleman. You will never be forgotten by millions around the world. Sincere condolences to his family.

What an inspiration this man was (and still is). I’m going to say ‘Tomorrow will be a good day’ every night before I go to sleep.

However, I do wish people wouldn’t leave flowers outside his home - there are far better ways of showing respect. The flowers will fade and die, and begin to look so sad.

An inspirational man!

Our thoughts are with his family.

susieboo Wed 03-Feb-21 11:30:27

Now he was what you call a hero . Goodnight Sir Captain Tom x

suttonJ Wed 03-Feb-21 11:47:12

catta5...I was wondering exactly the same.

Moggycuddler Wed 03-Feb-21 11:48:49

Yes, sad. He seemed to be a lovely old chap. But he was 100. He did very well!

JaneJudge Wed 03-Feb-21 11:57:05

He has lived a very interesting life and what a final year he had! smile RIP Tom

PipandFinn Wed 03-Feb-21 11:58:30

I also agree cata5....I think it was wonderful that he was able to have his loving family with him in the hospital when he died.
Unfortunately my daughters beloved Grandma is now in a hospice dying and she's begged to be allowed in to hug and hold her and tell her how much she loves her even saying she'll pay to have a covid test , all to no avail. She's absolutely distraught.......

I'm so so sad to learn of Sir Captain Tom's passing. I was convinced he'd pull through. In my mind , "he just had to" He served his country from beginning to end. I'm sure his family are very proud of him, as am I. He'll never be forgotten, he was a true hero in every sense of the word. His legacy shall live on. ' Rest in peace Sir Cpt Tom, you deserve your rest.' we'll miss you.

The PM has asked for a clap for Captain Tom and all those he was raising money for, tonight at 6.00 this evening.

beverly10 Wed 03-Feb-21 12:10:40

He served his country to the end. What more fitting tribute, that he be remembered by future generations , than by nameing a hospital after him.

Yorki Wed 03-Feb-21 12:18:35

Catta5... I was wondering the same thing regarding visiting relatives. But I expect with him being a very public figure, the hospital staff wouldn't have been able to do right for wrong. Can you imagine the uproar it would've caused if his family hadn't been allowed to visit, could the hospital have coped with all the bad press and constant harassment at such a critical time re: covid. I don't think they had any choice, they were in a no win situation. As to the choice of allowing his family to take him away at Christmas, they were probably warned of the dangers, but did it anyway, so I expect they might now be regretting that decision. Who knows, but I'm glad I haven't got that on my conscious. That's why, however hard it might be, we must adhere to the covid rules, and this proves the point. Plus Sir Cpt Tom didn't have age on his side. He probably begged them to take him out for a while. But no ones been a winner at this sad time. We can just remember him for his bravery and incredible achievements. I believe his name will go down in history.

His very special soul is flying free. He has inspired us all over the past year with his walk and his wise words xxx

PippaZ Wed 03-Feb-21 12:37:15

I was wondering the same thing regarding visiting relatives.

As I understood it he was not positive for Covid, or at least not known to be positive, when he went in to hospital. He went in because he had pneumonia. He was being given palliative care. I would think that in these circumstances relatives would be able, indeed encouraged, to be with patients. I cannot imagine what the rules would be once they discovered he was positive but I imagine the staff just did there best - as they have done for everyone in their care.

What an amazing final year of his life. He certainly made the most of the time he had left. To the benefit of us all in one way or another.

Iam64 Wed 03-Feb-21 12:47:30

Let’s simply celebrate a life well lived, a man who served his country in WW2 and in the final stages of his life.
Why the need to question the presence of his family at the end of his life.

Foxyferret Wed 03-Feb-21 12:48:16

R.I.P Sir Tom, a true gentleman and an inspiration to all.

pamdixon Wed 03-Feb-21 12:49:56

Captain Tom Moore's family forced to address criticism over Barbados holiday after cruel trolling.

Trolls alive and well on gransnet also.

The statement said doctors were consulted before Sir Tom and his family flew to Barbados on December 11. This was before Bedford was placed into Tier 3 on December 19 and later Tier 4 on December 20. He returned to the UK on January 6."

British Airways flew Captain Sir Tom Moore and his family to Barbados in December, a trip he said was on his "bucket list".

Every now and then someone you don’t know comes into your life and touches your heart. I’m genuinely very upset at this wonderful mans passing. Tomorrow will be a better day

suttonJ Wed 03-Feb-21 13:00:35

Just heard that Boris is to ‘lead’ a national clap for Sir Tom at 6pm tonight.
Never let it be said that Boris lets a good photo opportunity go to waste.

cassandra264 Wed 03-Feb-21 13:02:38

Captain Tom - you were - and are - an example to us all; lifted our spirits at a time we most needed it; and your efforts are still making a real difference to people. Thank you.
