Galaxy it seems to have gone beyond enjoying rare glimpses of the Royal Family enjoying private family moments to an unhealthy obsession on the part of the press and some of the public, not just in this country, to want to own them, private lives and all.

I think the Queen has always put duty before her own private feelings and her one lapse, if it could be called that, was when she was trying to protect her grandsons after their mother's death.

I think we do expect too much.

The showing of this circus will be badly timed if it goes ahead given that the Duke of Edinburgh is now suffering multiple medical problems that could go either way.

I like having a benign Monarchial system but then I look at Prince George and think, poor little lad, he doesn't realise yet what's ahead.
So my view is a selfish one and perhaps a Republic would be better after all.

I have nothing whatsoever against the Royal Family per se, Grany and am happy with the system as it is.

But should I expect this of one family? Is it fair for them to have little choice but to take on this burden?

Musing on whether or not republicanism would be a better system does not mean that my views are in any way in alignment with those of some other posters on this thread. They are not.

It is merely that I wonder if it is fair to the Royal Family to expect them to carry this burden into the future even though I think HM has done a superb job.

He was born into Greek& Danish Royal , they were exiled when he was an infant, he was educated in France, Germany & the UK.

I don’t know about Phil the Greek, but Phil the Kraut would in fact be more correct as a nickname (and that is all it is). He is mostly German, as is the Queen, his cousin. Like all European royalty, various countries were roped in for ‘ruling’ by the German descendants of the fruitful and fecund Queen Victoria.
I hope he recovers from his current illness.

I’m sorry I find all this criticism of the Royal Family at this particular time extremely distasteful. I do not dispute that everyone has a right to their own opinion, but for heaven’s sake have some respect. A 99 year old man is in Hospital, his family are naturally worried. All this smacks of the unpleasantness that the family of Sir Tom Moore had to face when he was in hospital. I am not a Royalist but I am appalled by some of the comments on this thread

God help the immigrants arriving in Scotland today if that is the attitude they will face. So glad that when my family arrived in Scotland from Greece 101 years ago they were met with a much nicer welcome. Maybe my family should pay back all the money and property they amassed over the last century just for pulling pints.

Could we maybe not used derogatory words about other nationalities. I was called kraut as a child, it wasnt the greatest of fun.
