I haven't watched even small extracts, but from the reports in the press and broadcast media, it strikes me that the RF cannot and never will have a right of reply.

And what of Oprah herself? What do we know (or think) about her? ?
(151 Posts)To be honest I didn’t know this much.
(Quoted from the Sunday Telegraph today).
Yet part of Winfrey’s mass appeal is that she walks the walk, her dramatic rags-to-self-made-billions the stuff of distinctly American fairy tales. Born into rural poverty in Mississippi to a teenage single mother, she lived with her grandmother until the age of six, was raped by multiple family members and got pregnant at 14 as a result of sexual abuse, only for her baby to die soon after birth.
At school, however, she flourished, and won a scholarship to Tennessee State University. At 19, she dropped out of her degree when she was offered a job as the youngest, and first black female, news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV. Her emotional style, however, did not go down well on a straight news programme and she was transferred to an ailing daytime chat show, People Are Talking, in 1978. When in 1984 she relocated to Chicago, to take over a morning chat show, its name was quickly changed from AM Chicago to The Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah had found her “alignment”.
As any good interviewer knows, the best way to elicit a confession is to offer one of your own. The British photographer and writer Carinthia West, who first met Winfrey on the set of the 1985 film The Color Purple the year after her move to Chicago, believes the Oprah effect stems from exactly this: her own willingness to show the uncomfortable, ugly side, on everything from her sexual abuse to her struggles with her weight.
‘Though she has huge wealth and power, she’s still very much that down-home girl’
“I think of her wheeling that 67lb of fat onstage [in 1988, to visually represent the weight she had recently lost] and I can’t think of anyone else who would be prepared to be that open,” says West.
When she returned to the US to interview Winfrey in the early 1990s, by which time the chat show host was world famous, West was “welcomed with open arms”.
“Though she has huge wealth and power now, she’s still very much that down-home girl,” says West. “She was seriously hurt in her own life, so she’s attracted to other people who, rightly or wrongly, feel they have been hurt in their own.”
I don’t think I ever saw her grill anyone, maybe she only interviewed (s) people she likes?
I believe she was the person who got Lance Armstrong to admit he'd taken drugs? I don't think she's the "Andrew Neil" style of interviewer, she's a bit more subtle in her approach.
oprah just provided the staged platform of course and wasn't there to interview them.
She also interviewed Sarah, Duchess of York, so not the first time she’s ‘done’ a duchess.

I don ‘t understand ?
There to ask agreed questions and not to interrogate their answers.
Yes, it will all be pre-rehearsed including Oprah's shock at some of the revelations.
Thanks everyone who has contributed to this thread. I’ve very much enjoyed reading all the posts!
I’ve decided to watch the interview programme tonight after all. I’d like to observe Oprah - especially after this thread! Anyway M&H comments have been all over the DM today. Too many to want to read.
I'm more interested in Oprah than Meghan after reading this thread so I may watch it.
Callistemon unfortunately I think that, like me, you will be disappointed.
I think that the whole thing stinks to be perfectly honest.
Me too Calli.
In what way Fanny? Do you mean Ophrah’s interviewing technique or what got said by M&H?
M seems to be like Marmite - people either love her or hate her. I am curious about how she will describe the Royal Family.
I was shocked to hear that Harry's father stopped taking his calls and (if I remember correctly) has cut them off financially. Perhaps there will be more interviews and revelations about the Royal Family if they do not help H&M financially!
As far as Oprah is concerned, I think she has done some very good work and promoted some very worthy causes but as she is said to be a friend of the H&M, I can't help wondering how impartial or challenging she will be compared with her interviews with her "non-friends"?
I think I read this interview was just a platform for M&H to air their grievances. I’m thinking Oprah might not be at her best here. I’m sure one of the articles I read today said that the agreement by M&H for an interview stipulated no challenges to their narrative was to be allowed.
Free rein then for M&H.?
Actually I don’t HATE either of them. I don’t know them! I am curious about Oprah now though - my interest about her has been piqued.
Why are you shocked if PC has cut them off financially Ramblingrose? They've moved into their 10 million $ mansion and signed lucrative deals.
They're adults and like most of us should be earning their own living, and let's not forget that they've just stuck the knife into H's family to ensure maximum publicity for themselves and for any business who has or is thinking of signing them up.
Both are very wealthy in their own right, Harry has his Inheritance from Diana, and Meghan from her acting career.
For those who dont know Oprah this interview will not show her in her best light.
Do you think Oprah’s input has been ‘silenced’ then MerylStreep?
I can be shocked Smileless if I choose to be - it's allowed I think!
Personally I think H&M and all the RF should be paying their own way by now instead of taking taxpayers' money when they are so wealthy and pay few taxes (according to what I have read). But that is for a different thread.
Ramblingrose I neither like nor hate either of them. I just think the pair of them should make up there minds what they want: to be Royal with all the bells and whistles, good and bad, or to disappear into a private life they both so richly deserve, with no press coverage, no interviews on Oprah, or anywhere else. At the moment they are trying to have their cake and eat it.
They have been told, quite rightly, I think, that royalty is not something like a spare jacket to be donned when it is needed and dropped on the floor when it isn't. It is something you have to commit to, as the Duchess of Cambridge has done.
If they want private life, then cut the capers, the living in an opulent house in California, the swanning around with A listers. Choose a smaller house, somewhere more secluded, where there considerable joint wealth will enable them to live on their investments and if the Duchess of Sussex wants to return to acting she can. Prince Harry can then stay home and be a house-husband and support those causes he is close to; the Invictus Games and The Setabale charity he has such close links with.
It's really kind of you to organise their lives for them but strangely enough they can completely ignore your advice.

Yes I do. But Oprah knows how many beans make 5 and wouldn’t want to kill the goose who laid the golden egg, if you see what I mean. Plus, Oprah wouldn’t want to be cancelled like lots of other Meghan ‘friends’
I agree with everything you have said M0nica.
I assume H&M wanted to use the interview to explain or give their side of the story about why they left.
But the trouble is that they haven't really left. They both have their Duke and Duchess titles and H is still in the line of succession to the throne.
The RF could withdraw their titles - just as they swiftly did with Diana - and Parliament could legislate regarding the succession. it's quite straight forward and I hope that that is what happens because I don't want to hear about H&M every day.
How would that stop you hearing about them.
Having to watch American tele (Forces) as it was the only English Language tele in Europe at the time, all the American interviewers including Oprah are very sycophantic. The US networks would never allow someone like Jeremy Paxman. especially when interviewing celebrities, they are never allowed to ask difficult questions.
