Another vote for “all the trimmings”. As a crafter and handsewer this gives me a mental picture of a turkey festooned with ribbons, lace, braid and fancy buttons

All of the words I was brought up to regard as rude or obscene still make me shudder, including belly, which we were never allowed to use.

Coy euphemisms for the toilet ´, including the word "loo", baby talk employed between grown-ups or by a grown-up to a child over the age of three, "passed away, or went away" instead of "died" "fur babies" after all "pets" is bad enough, and probably even more.

I am not madly keen about the use of "gay" instead of "homosexual" either.

Grannybags

Another Americanism which seems to be used a lot lately is gotten instead of got

I hate it too Grannybags, although apparently its is legitimately English and was used at the time of the Mayflower. Until recently it was obsolete everywhere but the USA and Canada.

My other cringe words include:
Hubby, hubs etc
Fur babies
Panties and panty hose
Trouser (as a verb)
Ballup, a northern slang word for a man's fly, sometimes used as a term of endearment ?; I can hardly even write it.

Afters/sweet
Pass away/on etc. A friend was once castigated for using "died" in a formal report instead of "passed away" or some other euphemism.
Hun
Gift/gifting
Snacking as an activity
Toilet, WC, lady's room, Little boys room, spend a penny, powder my nose etc.
Twee stuff
Cis - We don't need to be given a new prefix as a reminder that we are not trans. It's not inclusive it's offensive.

Most of other people's lists tbh apart from swearing. Like Shakespeare's depiction of Hotspur, I see no reason why women shouldn't swear properly and like a good swear now and again; I do draw the line at c**t being used in a derogatory manner by men.

Finally "lady" used instead of "woman". As a feminist child of the 60s & 70s it sets my teeth on edge.

I think all my pet hates have been done over in this thread except rest room - a euphemism for lavatory that doesn't seem to have crossed the Atlantic yet. When I first found one in Macy's I expected to find comfy furniture where I could put my feet up. What a let-down! Another one, in a US window display of intimate garments - ie bras and knickers.

And “reaching out” instead of contacting or phoning - particularly when used by businesses

Invites instead if invitations: to invite is a verb, invitations the noun. Have been known to correct speakers on television..

"Trust me" if they need to say it you definitely shouldn't trust them.
