Words that make you shudder

My daughter’s partner cannot stand the word ‘moist’. If you use it to describe a cake, for instance, it would quite put him off!
Do you have a word you hate, and is there a proper reason for your feelings?

"slaw" as in coleslaw, I shudder when I hear this!
Have been cringing reading a lot of these. Years ago a boss used to always say "let's touch base" - eek! I blame the Americans for a lot of these sayings!

Millieangel Fri 12-Mar-21 15:49:35

Phlegm!! Ugh.

Alison333 Fri 12-Mar-21 15:47:36

I've really enjoyed reading all these! Here's mine:

Gifted (why don't we give presents or gifts any longer?)
Bored of (should be bored with)
Reach out
'Are you all right?' from a shop assistant when I'm just waiting to pay.
Incredible, Awesome (about something slightly good)

Where to start? Exactly!
Many of the above, plus fave, absolutely, you know, and tuh (instead of to).
I’m of the pedant tendency when it comes to grammar and use of the English language. You will often hear me growling at the radio.

Where to start!
Amazing, Gob Smacked, Belly, Ticked all the boxes, arse, Brew,
I don’t really know where to stop

Along with ‘passed’, don’t like ‘lost’ used when someone has died.
My sister insisted on having it put on the service sheet for mum’s funeral service- ‘When we lost dad....’
I wanted ‘When dad died...’ but gave in as she was very upset, but wish I had insisted. Made it sound as though he had disappeared.

Also on the subject of death, don’t like ‘casket’.
It’s a coffin.

Moist

Grannybags Fri 12-Mar-21 15:28:21

Oh yes Babs758 "Shall I be Mother?" That's an awful one!

Lizzie66 Fri 12-Mar-21 15:21:25

I’m never happy with the expression ‘full English’. Everyone uses it, but I’m sure it’s a newish thing. Why did people stop asking for a ‘Full’ breakfast or the ‘works’ , and stating the ‘English’ part of it.

I think it's 'Scarey' how people 'Fall for a Baby' these days...

recklessgran Fri 12-Mar-21 14:22:49

"Can I get" instead of "Please may I have?" gives me the rage.
Also, little man and belly - really hate both of those.

Gingster Fri 12-Mar-21 14:22:48

The word that rhymes with part beginning with F...

Pearlsaminger Fri 12-Mar-21 14:10:25

Concur - A young girl at work used to say it all the time. Drove me mad.

Swanage - don’t know why - it makes me cringe ever since I was a kid

My bad - what the ....?! Why as a 50 year old professional man are you identifying as a 2 year old toddler! Speak properly!

NannanTo4 Fri 12-Mar-21 14:09:35

Major culprits

Boris Johnson
Matt Hancock
Gavin Williamson
Dominic Raab

Saying ‘t’ instead of to

I don’t hear anything they say due to hearing ‘t’ ‘t’ ‘t’ ‘t’

Bluecat

I was sat in the lounge with my hubby, after our fur baby had passed away over the rainbow bridge, and I turned round and said to him, "I have to go to the toilet because my panties are like moist. My bad."

Are you all screaming now?

Hahaha, Bluecat - for me that would have been an absolute full house if you'd also been planning your hollibobs!

Lizbethann55 Fri 12-Mar-21 14:08:16

My DD is another moist hater, along with Miranda Hart in her sit com. I hate the word phlegm. Made worse by the fact that my DH is always very phlegmy!

Paperbackwriter Fri 12-Mar-21 14:06:48

Hubby, hollibobs (dear lord!), fur-babies, rainbow bridge. Passed away (or even worse, passed) instead of died.

Nanna58 Fri 12-Mar-21 14:00:53

As per Oprah “ your truth’ - it’s either true or it isn’t!!

springishere Fri 12-Mar-21 14:00:45

All of the above, plus craw (as in: sticks in my.....), kids (what happened to all the children?), gob, f word used as an adjective, verb and noun, stool, faeces, anything that makes me cringe.

ExaltedWombat Fri 12-Mar-21 13:56:19

Unprecedented. For the 20th time in one news bulletin.

Rufus2 Fri 12-Mar-21 13:54:22

Can't understand why Men have 'underpants

Cos people would talk if we wore knickers, especially the frilly variety! grin

Like, like, like every second word in a conversation. You know (no I don't know) American word for knickers- panties, Babes, Hon, jab instead of jag (never been jagged by a jabby plant) and the C word.
