My view is we are still in a lockdown so it should not be permitted.

lemongrove Fri 12-Mar-21 20:41:07

My view too Jax

Urmstongran Fri 12-Mar-21 20:50:19

Later, just not now.

aggie Fri 12-Mar-21 20:57:58

It’s important to show feelings about this , but it is important not to gather in crowds and spread the virus .
Keep it in the forefront of the newspapers , posters , letters but not more Covid deaths

Grannybags Fri 12-Mar-21 20:59:39

I agree, now is not the time

Unfortunately...not just now....⚘

I think there are alternatives which could have been explored. However I do think that next time a huge mob of drunken mainly male football fans decide to gather illegally to celebrate some win or other, then some action might possibly be taken against them. Oh wait a minute - it’s mostly men. As you were ( and they’re also allowed out after dark)

suziewoozie Fri 12-Mar-21 21:43:51

It’s called male privilege

Just because one group do it doesn’t mean it’s fine to go ahead. No groups should do it, for any reason.

I am very concerned about the Mets role in this. I mean in terms of saying the protest shouldn't go ahead.

Yes I get that but why did a male event go unchallenged and unpunished? Not one arrest, not one fine? It’s always the same - males doing what they want and other males just wringing their hands and saying the equivalent of boys will be boys. Anyway, there will be people out tomorrow doing a vigil so it will be interesting to see how the police handle it. Perhaps everyone who turns up should either be male or dressed as a male and if they all wear football scarves it should be fine.

lemongrove Fri 12-Mar-21 22:02:31

I think any big group of people breaking the lockdown laws should be punished, ultimately it affects us all if it spreads the virus.Police have to gage reactions if they weigh in to a hostile crowd ( in any circumstances.)I do think though that police action should have been tougher all along with any group,
Be it football crowds, raves, parties or vigils.

suziewoozie Fri 12-Mar-21 22:04:54

Oh look a protest broken up by police, fines issued, are sets made. Look again, the protesters are women. Not a pattern then? Nah.

You'd need to ask the Scottish police chief who will have given the order as to how this gathering was to be policed. But yes you're right, men are sacrosanct, women not so. The Scottish hate crime bill conveniently omits sex as a protected class, wouldn't want to be outlawing misogyny now would they hmm

suziewoozie Fri 12-Mar-21 22:06:20

But lemon the fact remains that the men got away with it. The optics to say the least are not good

Jaxjacky Fri 12-Mar-21 22:06:31

There were some fines and arrests in Glasgow and at Corby.

suziewoozie Fri 12-Mar-21 22:09:05

Don’t know about Corby - no arrests made at Glasgow. I’m glad there were some fines however

Rosie51 Fri 12-Mar-21 22:10:29

I suspect women are being disproportionately fined/arrested because they're just not as violent or 'mobbish' as men.

NotTooOld Fri 12-Mar-21 22:12:37

No, they can't hold a vigil now, wrong time.
Terribly sad story, this. I feel so sorry for her parents.

I’ve found an updated news item which casts a different light - more action was taken than originally reported so thanks for putting me right. The club did not exactly cover themselves in glory but I was wrong in thinking the fans had a free ride
Rangers' Premiership win: 'Anger' over celebrating Rangers fans www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-56312051

Alegrias1 Fri 12-Mar-21 22:15:23

There is huge outrage in Scotland about the Rangers fans in George Square. All of the political parties condemned it, all with one voice, nobody has been wringing their hands. The Rangers fans weren't all men, either.

There is understanding here that the police couldn't just wade in to a crowd of excited Rangers fans.

The Health Secretary today was very clear that nobody should be gathering just now for anything.

EllanVannin Fri 12-Mar-21 22:17:11

No. A Memorial Service perhaps, later on when Covid cases reduce further.
