I’m sure everyone going to lay flowers etc is upset and shocked by what happened but I bet a lot of them will be posting their attendance on Instagram etc because caring is not enough - you have to show everyone else how empathetic you are.

Most would want to see practical solutions to reduce the risk for other women. I’ve seen a small but practical option from one of the hotels in Cardiff today, I think if all hotels offered this it would help women in cities who are being followed or are concerned about their safety.

Vigil attended at the town square in my small town. Dozens of women laying flowers an lighting candles. Local community police officers on his bicycle took one look and cycled off in the opposite direction. The problem with event was ???

I’m trying to avoid the news at the moment for various reasons and don’t know all the details. However, I heard the Superintendent say that this death was a very rare occurrence.
The statistics for death on the streets is massively higher for men than women, but we have never had vigils or a reaction such as this as far as I know.
Domestic violence is a different matter, sadly.
Both sexes need to be wary walking alone at night.

The met police really need some PR advice as a matter of urgency. What do they think this looks like.

I can't help thinking that, for a lot of people in that crowd, it was just a convenient excuse for a get together, an outing, a protest about lockdown - sad but true.

People ignoring lockdown and the request not to congregate as others did at Rangers, so it is not so cut and dried Iam64 and others. Both are wrong to me in a pandemic lockdown.

I agree with the courts decision. Any future action in Sarah's name, be it vigils, memorials, marches etc should be with her families blessing or not in her name at all.

If they are not in her name they should be at a time separate to this event - people should stop hijacking her families shock, horror and grief and making their tragedy and her death about other women's fear. Not now.

And no, I don't know how her family feel, and neither does anyone posting here unless they can claim to know them - but I do know that I don't want to be part of anything at this stage that would in any way take what little they have left of her away from them.

Sarah was theirs - not ours. We should have some damned respect.

My candle will be out on my step at 9.30. I don't believe you can limit the shock, horror and distress to the family although I would not like them to be put in a position where they are upset. I have no idea why others think it is up to them to tell us how each and everyone should respond to this tragic death. Sadly people's deaths do sometimes reach past the family to others and may our response may save this happening again in the future. How we respond is for us each to decide individually, NellG.

I agree that none of us know what the family want so therefore I think it’s distasteful, to evoke that aspect at all. However as others have so done, my twopennworth would be to guess that the erstwhile organisers would have in some way connected with the family to find out their wishes. Neither do I think for one minute that Kate would have turned up without doing the same . Your post is rather judgemental and preachy about the actions of others imo

As a young woman, I was terrified of being out and about in Leeds at the time of the Yorkshire ripper. Jaqueline Hill - his last victim - was murdered a mile from my home.

But as I've got older, I have realised that, in fact, statistically, my daughter and I are far safer than my sons. Young men, aged 18 -25, are the least likely of anyone to arrive home safely after a night out.

It would be good if we made the streets safe for everyone.

I think most of us know this - it’s been mentioned several times on threads to do with this murder. This isn’t the issue and neither is the issue simply about murder or extreme violence.

There was a campaign started some years ago where, if you thought you were in danger you could walk into a pub you could ask for Angela the bar staff would then get you a taxi home.

I really hope so, she has under delivered in her position.
