Unbearable noises!

I really, really dislike the sound of people eating. The worst are those who eat with their mouth open, but even people eating quite politely make a noise which makes me cringe. I’m fine in a pub/restaurant where there is background noise, but at home I have to switch on the radio when we have our lunch together.
What noises can’t you bear?

I have suffered for this past 20 years with Tinnitus. You can learn to pay no attention to certain noises. I can also choose to tune out noises I don't like. It takes concentration on something else sometimes.

Sniffing and throat clearing drive me mad. Relieved to see I am not alone

Children kicking a ball instantly at an internal joint wall. I just want them to go outside.
Farm dogs that yap at nothing when they hear the slightest movement. Living in the city for many years I was oblivious to traffic and the odd ambulance. Moving into the country has proved much noisier and starts much earlier.
After many years of teaching, I was immune to the slurps, burps and sniffs but not with my own family. I get worse as I get older.

Only a problem in the summer but I do like to sit outside reading & sunbathing. My next door neighbour is in her 80's & is very deaf (wear a hearing aid? Not a chance (reminds me of the Faulty Towers sketch) & she has women round all the time & they do actually shout at each other. Even if I move further down the garden I can still hear every word- mostly running down presumably other friends! I did try earplugs but then realised I could not hear the phone or doorbell. She is not the sort of person you could tactfully ask to keep a bit quieter. DH did play some loud music one afternoon to cover it up & of course she complained. He did tactfully tell her we can hear every word but she just said as she is deaf ( & won't wear her hearing aid) she cannot do anything about it.
She calls out to us if she knows we are in the garden & she has her friends round so we have to creep about- luckily we have a tall thick hedge between us. It's not just us- everyone in the road crosses over if they see her coming- I wouldn't mind if she ever had anything nice to say & not just a litany of complaints!

Can I turn this thread slightly into annoying habits although there is a connection. My husband won’t or can’t blow his nose. Don’t know if it’s because his mother was Spanish and it is not done there, or considered rude. Don’t think he could have been taught as a child. But if he has a runny nose or - heaven forbid a cold - he pokes a handkerchief up the ends of his nostrils to catch the drips. Then has to do it again a few minutes later as it runs again. Just blow it! Depends on how often this happens as to whether he gets a look or a full scale shout ‘just blow it!’

Gum-chewing. Seeing someone permanently chewing the cud I simply feel is grotesque. Especially if they spit it out rather than secreting it away in a tissue.

My husband eats crisps while watching tv and it literally makes my head go fuzzy. It’s unbearable. My heart rate goes up and I find myself breathing heavily. I know that’s not normal so don’t nag him to stop but blimey it’s horrible

Every night about 3 am a s%%ding possum jumps onto our top verandah and runs past our bedrooms. It sounds like thunder. I watched the little beast once and it does a huge jump from one of our trees. No idea why. They look cute but their habits are not.

Modern Jazz; it makes my stomach clench and a feeling of panic. Probably because of all (to me) random noise. Now Bach is what my head loves. It is so disciplined.

Certain irritating Radio 2 presenters who rabbit on and on about absolutely nothing. They just like the sound of their own voices and think they’re being entertaining/amusing. Just play more music PLEEEASE - why fill the radio airways with your inane constant chatter?! I often have to switch off or change to another channel.

I have misophonia and find listening to people eating is a nightmare. I’m ok if I’m eating too as I guess I’m distracted, but my DH’s bowl of cornflakes for supper is torture - I often leave the room. I also time my shower in the morning for when he’s having breakfast. My S-I-L is a really noisy eater and slurper and sniffer, he drives me crazy. I just grin and bear it though as I’m sure I’ve got things that annoy others. It’s good practice for my patience?

Nell8, ?

In our house it's any noise that can't be identified -
Middle of the night, bolt upright in bed "Whazzat? Can you hear that? Did you lock the back door?"
Or the time the whole house shook and reverberated to an ominous pounding noise "I knew it. I knew it. That plumber has completely cock*d up the pipes". (Turned out to be a pile driver on a building site.)

The sound of a dinner fork touching a person’s teeth make’s me instantly want to up chuck.

CanadianGran Wed 17-Mar-21 01:29:08

Women's curling on the TV.

My DH loves all sports and often keeps the TV on the sports channel all day while he putters about. I can handle just about all of them but that.

Also high pitched buzzing noises. Sometimes others can't hear them, but I can. Florescent lights sometimes make the sound, or computer fans.

HillyN I am with you on the sound of the football crowd. I have to turn it off immediately! Not a problem as I don't like football.
This thread is fascinating. I agree on the eating, snorting, phlegm sounds, they are all horrible.
Really loud motorbikes and children screaming loudly drive me crazy too. There is a dog who walks past my house sometimes with the most unbelievable loud, ear-splitting squeal of a bark I've ever heard! How anyone could live with that I have no idea.

HillyN Tue 16-Mar-21 23:28:06

I cannot stand the sound made by the crowd at a football match, all the shouting and chanting drives me up the wall! I was so pleased when they said that, due to Covid, football matches would be played behind closed doors as I quite enjoy watching the game. Then what do they do? Play recordings of crowd noise! Agh! Back to the earplugs!

I am worried Patsy70 I think we are with the same man! The pen clicking is the worst, usually while he is on the phone, its not like he is making notes. He does it just chatting to friends/family etc drives me mad.
I have been known to get up and take it out of his hand. lol

Mapleleaf Tue 16-Mar-21 23:02:09

Throat clearing, not threat clearing ?.

Mapleleaf Tue 16-Mar-21 23:00:27

I agree about the sniffing - hate it.
Scrunching sweet wrappers instead of putting them in the bin, clicking nails, noisy eating, revving motorbikes, constantly barking dogs, chalk squeaking on a blackboard, constant threat clearing. Oh dear, I sound very intolerant, don't I?

grandmajet Tue 16-Mar-21 22:54:33

Another thing my husband does it to poke at his cornflakes noisily with his spoon in between each mouthful. Just why?!

Curlywhirly Tue 16-Mar-21 22:34:53

Definitely the sniffing one and someone blowing their nose, yuck! Also DH always decides to eat a packet of crisps and rattle the bloody crisp packet just as we settle down to watch a TV programme; drives me insane.

Spangles1963 Tue 16-Mar-21 22:31:03

Where do I start? The sound of a football bouncing continually against a wall drives me to distraction. Also sniffing, and constant throat clearing,or worse still, what my mum used to call 'snortling',that horrible noise that some people make in their throat. I usually find the worst offenders in this respect are women!
And people who keep tapping, whether it's a teaspoon or their fingers, drives me nuts. As for people who have to sneeze at 100 decibels,I could cheerfully throttle them.

nanna8 Tue 16-Mar-21 22:24:44

It used to be chalk squeaking on a blackboard but now we have whiteboards that has gone. I don’t like the sound of people munching their food, either and also annoying clicks some people make with their mouths. The bloke next door who bangs metal on metal when he is shaping the knives he is making drives me nuts. He thinks he is a blacksmith, very irritating.

Scribbles Tue 16-Mar-21 22:18:54

The sound of someone cleaning their teeth. Toothpaste ads on TV induce real stress in me and must be muted.
