Unbearable noises!

I really, really dislike the sound of people eating. The worst are those who eat with their mouth open, but even people eating quite politely make a noise which makes me cringe. I’m fine in a pub/restaurant where there is background noise, but at home I have to switch on the radio when we have our lunch together.
What noises can’t you bear?

My neighbours teens who as soon as the sun comes out open the bedroom windows and play loud music while I’m quietly sitting outside reading.

There is a medical name for the ‘eating’ one grandmajet. I dislike people eating with their mouths open, and my sister used to make a noise like elephants walking on gravel when eating toast, but normal eating doesn’t bother me. Constant sniffing, however, drives me insane!

It's called misophonia, and I have it to a degree. I tend to move away if DH is eating toast, or virtually anything solid! He has a reflux cough, and that can drive me insane on bad days. Sniffing, burping, all impart the same sense of irritation, and I have to try so hard not to snap.

Witzend Tue 16-Mar-21 15:37:19

That very high pitched screaming some children do almost continuously while playing out. ?

Lexisgranny Tue 16-Mar-21 15:40:03

The clicking noise that is made when people pick at their nails, both the noise, and from the point of hygiene.

EllanVannin Tue 16-Mar-21 15:48:44

Loud breathers.

EllanVannin Tue 16-Mar-21 15:51:06

People who eat with their mouth open. How on earth can they taste what they're eating ? Even those who smell flowers or perfume while their mouths are open.

Sniffers drive me crazy, drinking noisily, eating with mouths open reminds me of cement mixer,

EllanVannin Tue 16-Mar-21 15:53:14

Over-exaggeration of any noises.

grandmajet Tue 16-Mar-21 15:54:09

Yes, sniffers! And people who chew gum loudly.

I`m with you both granmajet and witzend.
A family member constantly slaps her chops when eating and it drives me mad,
A new family moved over the road from us and the girl constantly screams when outside.
So no peace in or out.

JenniferEccles Tue 16-Mar-21 15:59:15

Virtually any noise with me.
I can’t understand why so many people hate a silent house and have to have a radio or tv on all the time.

I feel so sorry for those who have noisy neighbours whether it’s a barking dog, noisy children or loud music.

I seem to be the only person to cover my ears in the street if a police or ambulance passes with the siren blaring. It does cause physical pain.

I have been aware since I was a child that I have a low tolerance level of noise.

Some people with sinus problems eat with their mouths open as that’s the only way they can breath.

H1954 Tue 16-Mar-21 15:59:57

Sniffing and throat clearing, particularly when there's obviously phlegm involved! Chewing/eating with mouths open. The squeak of expanded polystyrene and squealing children.

Constant sniffers drive me up the wall. For some weird reason spooning dry custard out of the container and walking through deep snow makes my flesh crawl.

grandmajet Tue 16-Mar-21 16:43:58

Well, Sarnia, the custard and snow ones are fairly unique.

Redhead56 Tue 16-Mar-21 16:46:57

Coughing up and spitting is disgusting, football being kicked against a fence drives me mad. The tv volume too loud very irritating. Women with foghorn voices screaming at their children especially in shops. Only for the fact I can’t run fast I would tell them to zip it.

cornishpatsy Tue 16-Mar-21 17:13:42

Barking dogs, especially the yappy ones. I had a neighbour who left their yappy dog barking for 3 hours in their garden.

Also the final spin on a washing machine, it seems to go on just that bit too long.

Sniffing! Ugh. I also can't stand the sound of someone using nail clippers. Just writing that makes me shudder.

hollysteers Tue 16-Mar-21 17:36:28

The style of singing used in musicals now, the voice placed in the nose, I can’t bear it.
Oh for the days of Rodgers & Hammerstein, when the voices were used so well and often had an opera background.

grandmajet Tue 16-Mar-21 17:46:01

Someone scratching their leg with long nails when they have tights on.

NotSpaghetti Tue 16-Mar-21 17:50:15

No, I totally get the custard one...
????
Arghhhhh

NotSpaghetti Tue 16-Mar-21 17:51:35

I hate "vocal fry"too.
WHY do people do it?

Patsy70 Tue 16-Mar-21 17:52:57

I’m very intolerant, so my OH constantly reminds me! He’s a tapper - tapping the knife whilst waiting for his toast to pop up; tapping the pencil whilst doing the crossword; clicking the pen on and off etc. etc. He says it’s because he’s a musician! Doesn’t sound very musical to me. ?. He’s also got the loudest sneeze I’ve ever heard. I hate sniffing too. Just blow your nose for goodness sake. There are more. Perhaps he’s right and I’m just intolerant. ?
