I saw the thread title and instantly thought of Ryan O’Neal in Thornbirds. He wasn’t the dark and brooding sexy priest in my head when I read the book.
I suppose that stuck in my head as one of life’s great disappointments.

You should have thought about it a bit longer. It was Richard Chamberlain.

I watched Sylvia last night prepared to find both Daniel Craig and Gwyneth Paltrow miscast. The film is, of course, heartbreaking but the actors both surprised me, especially Daniel Craig. I once saw Ted Hughes at a poetry reading, he made a huge impression, and I thought Daniel Craig would be ridiculous playing him. In fact I found him was surprisingly convincing. Gwyneth Paltrow also was believable at being both the brash American and, later, the distraught and lonely wife.

I thought he was excellent in A Very English Scandal
And his send-up of himself in the Paddington film was wonderful!

I enjoyed The Inn of the Sixth Happiness but agree now that Ingrid Bergman was not like Gladys Aylward in real life.
However, I'm not sure if it was mis-casting if she portrayed the story well.
Perhaps some dramatic licence should be allowed to tell a story?

Nicholas Cage was definitely not my Captain Corelli. I loved the book and had this vision of someone tall dark and handsome. What a disappointment!

I know what you mean. She doesn’t seem to have enough authority somehow, indecisive.

But as you say, early days, only episode 1.

TBH, haven’t cared for her in other roles I’ve seen her in.

Problems arise when people read the book first. You have a description and an image of the person in your mind which the movie casting doesn't always match. Better to see the movie before reading the book, then at least you can enjoy the movie!

I was watching Terminator the other day and it occurred to me how perfectly cast Arnold Schwartznegger was!

Billie Piper was woefully miscast as Fanny Price in Mansfield Park. She should have been thin and sickly and shy but wasn't any of those things.

No, he had brown hair at the darkest, I mean with black hair for example Much more Latin looking.

Ammonite was on tv last night and I couldn’t quite believe what I was watching. I’m glad I didn’t go to the cinema to watch it when it came out!
