One upmanship

So, over the last few weeks I have seen one upmanship on GN about the following:

Curtain v plantation shutters
Paint v wallpaper
Sausages (cheap and fatty v butchers)
Easter eggs
Holidays (2nd home v beach and poool)
Houses (detached v anything else)

Have I missed anything?

I was brought up saying neither garridge nor gararge, but simply saying the word the way it was spelt 'garage', with a flat open 'a' and no emphasis on the last syllable

Ellianne

I was told that to sound more posh you should speak slower and elongate the vowels. So grarss sounds posher than grass apparently.

You should speak without moving your top lip.

Ah she’ll be right mate. Haven’t seen what youse have here but you poms, it’s part of life, right? Jealousy’s a bloody curse mate.

Bought Easter Eggs for my grandkids - £2.99 each from Home Bargains, just thought I’d let you know.....

Devon and Dorset have long vowel sounds too! Now where's my piece of straw?

GagaJo Sun 28-Mar-21 22:32:24

Unless you're from Norfolk, Ellianne. Then you sound like a bumpkin. I should know!

I am as Northern as they come and have Southern GC who sit on the grarss take a Barth etc but I have always had a gararge.
Never a garidge.

kittylester Sun 28-Mar-21 20:58:15

We had a garridge but DH had a gararge!

annodomini Fri 26-Mar-21 13:24:07

We had a 'garridge' and were obliged to keep our bikes in it overnight. I can't understand why so many youngsters nowadays keep bikes outside (my GC included). No wonder a lot of them get stolen. I was reliably(?) informed that a great aunt whom I never knew had married the managing director of Johnny Walker. Not that my family ever felt the benefits!

Lucca that would be telling, but one of my uncles was called Sweeney Todd grin

Starting reading this thread yesterday. Having a read this morning I'm reminded of the Class sketch from Frost report

How about the opposite:
Monty Python - We were so poor. (Four Yorkshire Men) grin

Puzzler, we had a garage pronounced GARage. Man next door actually a nice man, had moved from social housing to an owned semi and he said garADSHE.

annodomini Fri 26-Mar-21 11:51:49

My granny had a drawing room but it was never used except when the minister came to tea. But we were all allowed to use the croquet lawn.

Lifestyle choices are social class markers. If anyone wants to move up or down the social class gradient they should learn the subtle markers of the class they aim to join.

As it’s Friday we shall be having caviar for lunch on toasted gold and champagne bread from Robert Didier.

My childhood schoolfriend’s mum was a bit posh. They had a car and a garage - we had neither.
If I mentioned the garage, she would correct me and say “it’s a Garrashe, not garage”.

Ooh, I have two bathrooms- both with full size bath and shower, one upstairs and one down-(the maid hates the extra cleaning but what can I do?). Does this enable me to qualify to the 'one-up-man-ship' club?
I do hope so- if not we also have a conservatory and a summer house (aka Mr M's shed)- will these do as an alternative entry?
I'm very blue-blooded, usually cos I am cold, and would fit in well with the rest of you one-up-man-shippers! I eagerly await your reply...[excited]

Pantglas2 Fri 26-Mar-21 09:22:04

Hectually, I like to use my pre warmed bone China gazunder which Lizzie, my chambermaid, removes the moment I ring the bell ...such a treasure that girl! Comes from a long line of family retainers here at Pantglas Towers ?
