One upmanship

So, over the last few weeks I have seen one upmanship on GN about the following:

Curtain v plantation shutters
Paint v wallpaper
Sausages (cheap and fatty v butchers)
Easter eggs
Holidays (2nd home v beach and poool)
Houses (detached v anything else)

Have I missed anything?

Me too Dragonfly. I couldn't care less what others have but am very sympathetic toward those who don't have anything.

I couldn't care less about material things so I am never envious of others in that respect.
What does upset me is that so many people are seeing their AC and GC all the time despite lockdown and broadcast here about it.
Of that I am envious. I haven't seen my GC for 15 months nor my AC.
It is silly I know as everyone's circumstances are different and I try to be happy for them.

Me too, Blossoming!

Blossoming

As an aside, if a teacher writes ‘Could do better’ on your school report you get into loads of trouble if you write ‘So could you’ on it and hand it back to them. I know this from experience grin

I love that, Blossoming! grin

I now count how many items are bragged about per post

Well I don’t suppose anyone can top that for obsessive behaviour, Marpau.

marpau Wed 24-Mar-21 09:12:59

GagaJo I have noticed this. There is one particular thread where poster peppers every post with references to items owned baking prowess how expensive everything is that she has bought and I'm surprised the world can still function now she has retired! Very sympathetic lady though it you have a headache she has a migraine if not full brain hemorrhage grin I now count how many items are bragged about per post (put it down to lockdown boredom)

I think the OP says far more about the poster and her view of the world, than it does about the world (and GN in particular).

I can honestly say I never sense oneupmanship. I’m never intimidated by what I read and I hope what I write does not make others feel uncomfortable. For me wealth is health (mental and physical) and happiness. There’s such a breadth of age, experience and reaction on GN which can only enrich those who follow. I gain comfort in knowing that others feel the same way as I do and I respect others who don’t. I learn a good deal about relationships, how to respond in a measured way to situations and how to live well (fatty sausages or not). The camaraderie and humour on GN, I find, is priceless and I’m so glad I joined.

I've just had my Fortnum's delivery. Rare breed pork and leek sausages. Is that what the OP meant?

I’m so glad you only eat rare breed leeks, Ellianne!

I’ve never noticed any, or I’m oblivious to it. I’ll pay more attention ? ‘could do better’ was often on my school reports.

Not like my school reports then, JaxJacky.
Mine were always excellent and, apparently, I was the most outstanding pupil ever to grace their hallowed premises!

Think the only time I blotted my copybook was to admit we use the word lounge. Apparently either posh, pretensious or both. Oops! Ain't gonna change though..

I wish the OP would return and explain why she considered the threads she mentioned to be threads of oneupmanship. perhaps if we knew the hows and whys we might be moreable to agree with her.

Aveline Tue 23-Mar-21 17:44:04

I've never noticed any one upmanship on GN. However, once in real life, I was told something absolutely gobsmackingly one up but the lady telling me was a lovely person and was just innocently talking about an incident in her life. That was very impressive.

Now where's that gilt edged Easter egg ....
Did you know Fabergé eggs were first designed for the Tsars to give to their wives at Easter. I wonder if they could send me the catalogue?

CherryCezzy Tue 23-Mar-21 16:59:19

grandmajet my belated sister(in law) loved her Ka too ☺️. I won't tell you about the cars she had before it, it may be interpreted as boasting ?.
I agree that some threads can sometimes sound like competitive misery Grammaretto. Why anyone would want to compete that way, it defies my logic. Though sound like may be how they appear rather than anything else.

I have never noticed any of these oneupmanship threads. What have I missed!?

Although wait, some threads can sometimes sound like competitive misery.

I am an inverted snob but I try not to boast. grin

I get wistful at times when I read about so many of you who have seen their DGC recently or who live close to them.

Ellianne Tue 23-Mar-21 16:20:02

I agree, Monica, and there are plenty of GNs who are adept at injecting some humour and humility into their posts, as on this thread.

I think what upset me on one occasion was when a poster remembered something I wrote in say April or September about my lifestyle and then proceeded to launch attacks much further down the line.

I must admit I can barely remember who said what about their wealth or status. It just isn't important.

Callistemon Tue 23-Mar-21 16:18:28

Flicker my friend had a butler's pantry! Her house was what you might term substantial but certainly not large and in rather desperate need of some TLC.

Maggiemaybe Tue 23-Mar-21 16:10:26

ginny

Besides, my house is bigger than yours. My second car is a Porsche and all my children and Grandchildren are geniuses.

Well I have a whole fleet of vehicles and a host of liveried drivers at my command. The local corporation manages them for me.

In return, I kindly allow less fortunate members of the public to share my conveyances.

M0nica Tue 23-Mar-21 15:56:24

What I like about GN is that it does represent a cross section of society and on it one is meeting people from far more varied backgrounds than one could ever hope to meet in ordinary life.

I see very little upmanship of possessions, but more people claiming the moral high ground and self righteous virtue. But even that occurs only infrequently.
