Well my children are in their early twenties and I was talking about the big ship stuck in the Suez Canal. To which they all said "The what!" I just can't believe they've never heard of it

Oh no! Tea bagging.?
When did all these connotations creep in? It makes me wonder what I may have inadvertently said over recent years!

I’ve got one of ‘those’ in my jewellery box and I’ll never look at it the same way again!??. Learn something new every day to keep the brain active. ✔️

Sometimes Ignorance is Bliss!grin

Goodness, Shropshirelass - I’ve sometimes expected similar for a turnip, but it’s not happened so far!
Especially when dh recently didn’t know the difference between that and a parsnip...

I ve never heard either of those phrases don’t think a Pearl necklaces look much like that and the second one makes me feel a bit nauseous

I do know about growing pampas grass in your garden though

I was in my 70's before I knew what a merkin was - and I studied history !

It was part of a joke about George Dublyah who began his speeches with, 'My fellow Merkins...' and I didn't know why people around me were laughing hysterically.

And it was watching another comedic sketch in which the stand-up mentioned a dental dam which informed me about that particular item.

Mind you, I am a recluse smile

Another innocent here on the pearl necklace issue. I’ve just googled it. I’d never have guessed ....! ?

Kaimoana Sat 27-Mar-21 09:47:28

I just pour boiling water over my tea bags and leave them to mash; I don't dip them in and out at all. grin

I learnt about tea-bagging when my DGS’s school announced one day that it was having a teabag challenge, then changed the title the next day. My DD explained!

gulligranny Sat 27-Mar-21 11:35:56

What would we do without Google! Talk about live and learn ... a friend was telling me recently about a lavender marriage, which I'd never heard of, have you?

GillT57 Sat 27-Mar-21 11:51:31

Urmstongran

I was enjoying an afternoon of wine and laughter with a group of ladies last summer. One was a few weeks away from her pearl wedding anniversary. One of the friends suggested it would be lovely if her husband gave her a pearl necklace to mark the occasion. A few of us spluttered into our glasses whilst the friend and two others looked on quite bemused .... the innocents.
??

Hahaha! I hadn't heard of that expression either, it puts a very different slant on the expression 'pearl clutching' doesn't it grin

I once said to someone, when he asked how things were with one of my family, “ The elephant’s not in the room anymore, but is still peaking through the door!”. He said, “ What elephant?” !!

Blossoming Sat 27-Mar-21 12:05:20

From now on I shall refer to the item in my jewellery box as ‘a string of pearls’ and only use loose leaf tea grin

I remember an elderly aunt spotting a tampax in my sister’s handbag, picking it up, holding it in the air and asking loudly “What’s this?” My quick thinking sister said “Eye makeup remover” while the rest of us fell about laughing.

Millie22 Sat 27-Mar-21 12:09:50

I asked my husband about the pn meaning a few years ago as I hadn't heard of it.

DiscoDancer1975 Sat 27-Mar-21 12:10:48

I’ve had to look up so many of these? Is it a generational thing maybe? My daughter and son in law fell about laughing last week when my husband said he’s going to sort out his wood in the garage!!?

DiscoDancer1975 Sat 27-Mar-21 12:14:47

I’m even starting to wonder about the OP’s username!!?
