Well my children are in their early twenties and I was talking about the big ship stuck in the Suez Canal. To which they all said "The what!" I just can't believe they've never heard of it

I didn't know either, cannot say that finding the other meaning was worth the time and effort expended on it.

Calendargirl Sat 27-Mar-21 12:32:27

I hadn’t heard of either of those terms.

I wonder how many others I don’t know.

Not bothered, all sound revolting.

Just proves to me that language is an evolving thing. I do know about the Beatles and the Incredible String hand but then I am getting a bit old for the other activities. Hey ho

Well, they say you learn something new everyday blush !

It stands the Hong Kong and Shanghai banking corporation

Biscuitmuncher Sat 27-Mar-21 13:16:42

Well I thought this would be a fun thread, but it's turned into a thread about mucky filth ?

3nanny6 Sat 27-Mar-21 13:34:26

I could not believe someone from London got a question wrong on a quizz show the other day.
The question was about cockneys and asked what church bells must someone be born within the sound of to be called a cockney. The answer was St. Mary Le Bow although most of us would say the Bow Bells.
I started laughing when the contestant answered the bells
of St Pauls Cathedral.

I learned that dogging his footsteps was not a suitable phrase any more when we went to see Fascinating Aida. Not for the faint hearted!

Well, Biscuitmuncher, you will be relieved to know that your username just means someone who spends a lot of time in meetings munching biscuits rather than doing anything useful. Nothing mucky at all!

A friend always refers to it as the Hong Kong and Shang Ri La bank...

I googled tea bagging and ok, I get that. But no such luck with string of pearls. All I got was houseplants and Glenn Miller.....

Susiewong65 Sat 27-Mar-21 15:18:05

I not allowed to refer to my under-stairs cupboard as my ‘glory hole’ either any more.

Grandmajean Sat 27-Mar-21 15:46:34

Pearl necklace new to me too ! Have definitely talked about it in many situations. Don't remember any sniggering but wouldn't have realised anyway !

BBbevan Sat 27-Mar-21 15:48:57

????? cheered me up no end this thread. But google has worked overtime .

On Peter Kay's Car Share The passenger told him she was going 'dogging', which she though was taking her dog for a walk

Billybob4491 Sat 27-Mar-21 16:21:02

I thought "dogging" was taking your pet for a walk.

joannapiano Sat 27-Mar-21 16:27:10

When DH was in the Met Police he knew all the local dogging places near Hampstead Heath.

grandmajet Sat 27-Mar-21 16:33:20

I was walking down a quiet local lane with Grandpajet recently when I saw a couple ‘taking their dog for a walk’ in a car at the side of the road! ? ?

tiredoldwoman Sat 27-Mar-21 16:34:05

out in the woods the other day my grandbaby got stuck in the mud and had to be carried . Her mud heavy welly fell off so I stuck a branch in it and walked along singing and doing Jake the Peg . Everyone just stared .............

Beechnut Sat 27-Mar-21 16:47:14

A member of my family has a “I love dogging mug”.

Marmight Sat 27-Mar-21 16:48:06

Google must be doing overtime. Ive been completely put off the mug of tea I’ve just made. I wonder who first introduced some of these crackers. They had to come from somewhere after all, teabags aren’t that old, unlike a merkin ?

kircubbin2000 Sat 27-Mar-21 16:51:05

I've only learnt this too. Saltire.

kircubbin2000 Sat 27-Mar-21 16:52:43

Friend was going dogging?.
Another hadn't heard of Line of Duty or Katy Price.

GrandmasueUK Sat 27-Mar-21 17:04:20

My lovely MIL went on a day trip and came back wearing a baseball cap with writing on it. We had to tell her it wasn’t actually another way of saying, “I love cats”. The teenage grandchildren thought it was really funny ?
