Tesco stopping letting customers have tray liners

Just put some boxes on your doorstep and let the poor bloke plonk the stuff in then you can do it bit by bit at your leisure without worrying about him breathing

Sorry, Bluebelle I repeated exactly what you suggested, but yes, it seems sensible.

Pre-pandemic the delivery driver would hold a tray at waist height and I would gradually remove items from the tray.
Really? Poor delivery driver! Why did you not let them come inside and put the trays down in the kitchen to empty at your leisure and give the empty trays back next time?

ElderlyPerson. I will try to explain what we did. As I said, we weren't expecting no liners or bags. We have a small porch wide enough to take the pallets. The driver was masked. He stood on the drive and put the pallets one at a time in the porch and then stood back. We were inside the house at least 2 metres from the driver.
My husband, masked and wearing disposable gloves, quickly grabbed the stuff and passed some to me and put the rest on the hall floor. As we emptied each tray, the driver took it. The whole process took 5 minutes I would say, probably less.
It wasn't ideal but it was unexpected and OK. We are happy with the 2 metre distance. We have been having Tesco deliveries for over a year now and have always got them to drop it in the porch and we take it. We don't leave everything for days before we touch it. We put it away straight away and disinfect doors, handles etc. Try not to worry.

I feel that GN has entered a parallel universe. The “problem” has been explained many times, many solutions have been offered.
One post has been deleted and then quoted in another post but allowed to stay up.
Plus The server keeps crashing.

MissChateline, I agree that it does not seem cost effective. I can appreciate that saving two or three tray liners or more per customer with around 1.3 million deliveries each week is a lot of plastic. But they can be recycled and the drivers will take them back next time if they are put out for them. Though not every customer has tray liners, it was an option, at 40p per delivery. So those who have them thought it worth paying to have them.

They say that elderly and infirm who have not got COVID_19 can have a delivery inside. I have never done this in many years of having deliveries from Tesco. Apart from all the COVID-19 related concerns about this, my kitchen is not big enough for social distancing and there is nowhere with enough space to place a tray - the kitchen does not have a glossy magazine only £LOTS to buy vast work surface installation!

Management must manage, as the saying goes and I do wonder how much thought has been given to the practical issues involved rather than just the reduce plastic agenda.

So, I went for my click and collect yesterday afternoon, dreading it as I said, but it was a bit of an anti-climax because the tray liners were in place. They are being discontiued later this month apparently. I told the men that I am dreading loading my groceries without them and they said lots of people are saying likewise. I find it quite easy, you see, to pick up the liners, very carefully, and dump them in the car boot.

It is strange how colds are still very common. My oh works for himself, I deal with the grocery deliveries, he goes to the garage every fortnight for fuel. It is quiet and he is careful not to touch anything, lots of hand gel afterwards but he still caught a bad cold.

I am not a clinician, but I heard a supposed reason for this some years ago.

There was an old saying that if someone got caught in the rain then they would get a cold.

As people learned about virus infection this became regarded as an Old Wives' Tale.

However, it appears that there may be truth within it.

The idea being that the virus is very widespread and is habitually in many people's noses. However, the body's immune system keeps it at bay in a continuous battle. If someone gets a bit chilled as in a heavy rain, the immune system becomes temporarily a bit weakened and the cold virus gets a foothold.

I read it, and then read it again. I think I get the idea. It is fascinating.

It seems inevitable that it will take longer. It will take everybody longer. Will a queue build up? Will people get their shopping before their allocated slot finishes? What happens if they do not reach the front of the queue in time? There will be people arriving for their booking that is in the next slot.

Maybe when you go to get your shopping there will be a queue from the previous hour, or even two hours, when you arrive.

How does Tesco work the collection bay? I suppose that in normal circumstances if a person does not turn up in time their grocery gets removed from the bay after a while.

I suppose that if it gets chaotic all over the country that that may lead to a rethink of the policy.

My son delivers for Tesco so I asked him about it. He said they have stopped them but the drivers think the timing is wrong, and he said "Guess who all the customers complain to!"

I have just e-mailed the CEO of Tesco, Ken Murphy, and asked him if he realises the difficulty a lot of his older, frailer customers who use this service, are going to have with the new policy.

If he replies I will let you know. Why do those posters who are bored with this thread need to post put downs or negative comments? It is a matter of concern to those of us affected. Please be kinder!

And just to add, I have never seen said plastic trays. They are, apparently about 3 foot wide by 2 foot by about 6 inches high are rigid plastic and the delivery driver takes them back

So I am wondering how a frail elderly person could possibly lift one, and what this has to do with the Marriage Act, guide dogs, plastic straws etc.

We’ve made the decision to reintroduce bagless shopping to support our plan to reduce the use of plastic at Tesco. We’re committed to reducing plastic and packaging wherever we can and we’ve already removed single-use carrier bags from our stores, as well as looking at other ways we can be more environmentally friendly.

We've included extra delivery time at the door for bagless orders. We know it can take longer and it's a new adjustment for lots of customers, so we want you to know there's no pressure to rush your unpacking.

We recommend having your own bags or boxes ready at the door to pack into. If you've not got these at the door, don't worry, there's always time to grab them.
