Hello Everyone
Mine was 'Once Upon a Time' by Simple Minds (an LP).

It was 1985 and I was 13, so quite old really. It was the Summer holidays.
It cost £4.50 from whichever shop was WHSmith before it became WHSmith in Stourbridge.

I've no idea why I chose it. I think that I might have thought it was cool.
I was quite young for my age then. It must have been a bit of a quiet period for my mom and dad, just before I became a bit of a parental nightmare! ?

What was your first record?

Cliff Richards' 'Move It'. I was 13 years old!!!! (1959) I made a scrap book of all his pictures and thought he was wonderful........ He's still around and so am I!

Unchained Melody Al Hibler. At 13 my girl friend and I used to cry over it.

Hellogirl1 Thu 08-Apr-21 20:11:14

Romola, yes, I went to see Espresso Bongo. I remember being outraged at Lawrence Harvey calling Cliff`s character "a snotty nosed kid"! Loved the song "A Voice in the Wilderness".

First single was Runaround Sue by Racey in 1977, 65p in Woolworths. First album was Now That's What I Call Music 3 about 1985 for £2.99.

I don’t remember the first record I bought, because my mom was always buying records. She bought all the Beatles singles, as well as all of cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, manfred man, the supremes. So I think now my mom was quite cool. And guess what ???
I’ve still got them ??

Nannyfrance Thu 08-Apr-21 19:09:31

Sandie Shaw, Long live love bought in Woolworths.

Shizam Thu 08-Apr-21 19:03:06

Anyone Who Had a Heart by Cilla Black. I must have been quite a melodramatic five year old to have liked that! I’ve still got it as well. The record, and probably the melancholy!

Gosh, I remember so many of those. I think my first one was ‘Halfway to Paradise’ by Billy Fury. I loved him. He would have loved me too, but we never met!
I think Last Train to San Fernando Was by Lonnie Donegan.
I feel my taste was quite mainstream compared to some of you cool chicks!

I loved Billy too, so did my friend Jean. We went to The Radio Show at Earls Court because he was appearing. We got there early and were right at the front. Before he came on Jean fainted and was lifted up and taken back stage. I went to find her and she was in The Green Room being looked after by Mandy Miller the actress. While we were sitting there Billy came in and sat opposite us. We were trying to pluck up the courage to go and ask for his autograph but he was announced and went on stage. Talk about a missed opportunity. I went to see his statue at Liverpool’s Albert Dock last year.

Me too and I still love The Monkees today.

Barbara Ann by the Beach Boys. It cost 6s 8d from Boots! Would that be about 65p now?

GreyKnitter Thu 08-Apr-21 18:46:44

Russ Conway. Side saddle!

Twopence Thu 08-Apr-21 18:36:00

"Born Too Late" by the Poni Tails. It was 1958, I was 15 and had a schoolgirl crush on the man who was playing my father in a play put on by the local amateur dramatic society!!!

PamelaJ1 Thu 08-Apr-21 18:33:47

I think that I need to make a playlist after reading this thread.

PamelaJ1 Thu 08-Apr-21 18:32:40

Kate and Grandmajean thank you.

Grannyof8 Thu 08-Apr-21 18:26:49

It might as well rain until September by Carol King - cost me 6/8d!

Moth62 Thu 08-Apr-21 18:03:33

First single was Rolling Stones Hey you get offa my cloud in 1965. First LP was Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik in 1967 and it cost my dad 21/- for my 11th birthday.

cupcake1 Thu 08-Apr-21 17:52:52

I can’t remember my first single but I do remember my first LP ‘With the Beatles’ I felt so grown up carrying it back on the bus home. Still got it although nothing to play it on nowadays! Spent hours listening to it in my bedroom, probably drove my parents mad!

Rosina Thu 08-Apr-21 17:42:33

My first record was an LP - 'Please Please Me'. I still have it - hopefully, in mint condition, it might realise some funds one day.

MrsBoot Thu 08-Apr-21 17:26:53

'Sealed with a kiss' by Brian Hyland about 1963/4. Better than the later version by Jason Donovan.

jerseygirl Thu 08-Apr-21 16:53:46

I want you back - The jackson 5

Patsy429 Thu 08-Apr-21 16:44:00

Please don't tease by Cliff Richard 1960. I was 11 so would have had to save up my pocket money to buy and play on my Dansette record player.

FarawayGran Thu 08-Apr-21 16:19:42

My first record was Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony ( Pathetique)
I don't know where I first heard it, but it's been one of my favourites for more than 60 years
After that I bought Buddy Holly albums

Riggie Thu 08-Apr-21 16:12:09

CrazyH I had The Young Ones EP too.

I would have sworn I had the Beatles "She Loves You" first but google tells me that was released in 1964 and The Young Ones was 1962. Unless copies were still around in the shops and I got it later.

I seem to remember singles were Six Shillings and Thruppence. Old friends of Dad always sent my brother and I a record token each at xmas.

SueEH Thu 08-Apr-21 15:36:41

Propaganda by Sparks was my first LP and Without You by Harry Nielsen my first single. I still have and play them smile

GeorgyGirl Thu 08-Apr-21 15:24:59

"Let's Get Together" - Hayley Mills from the 1961 film The Parent Trap.
