What did Prince Phillip mean to you?

A tribe in the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu is in mourning after the death last week of Britain’s Prince Philip, who they revered as a god. The Prince Philip Movement has existed for 50 years in two villages, and is believed to have a few hundred followers. In 1974 the prince visited the area with Queen Elizabeth II, and reportedly took part in local ceremonies. According to anthropologists, Philip is seen as the re-embodiment of a powerful mountain spirit, and for the next few weeks the villagers will conduct rites for the Duke, whose funeral is set for Saturday. What did Prince Phillip mean to you?

kircubbin racist comments are NEVER a joke and he made some awful ones that were passed off almost lovingly as just ‘his gaffes’ similarly to the Johnson man they are laughed off as just being ‘a bit’ outspoken or just ‘jokey’ it’s unbelievable what these ‘famous’ people can get away with saying
As for his faithfulness for 73 years no one knows that..l there have been lots of rumours over the years and maybe they are just talk, but absolutely who knows only the two people involved
He was just a long lived man who did good and bad, in other words he was human and as a senior royal he was honoured with a lot of interest but days and days of nothing but, is way over the top
Of course the queen will feel the same as any other bereaved partner but she has a big loving family around her, money coming out of her ears to give any kind of comfort or needs she may have, houses, castles, cars, horses, dogs she s not sitting by an electric fire, all alone and missing her man is she ?
I feel sorry for her but not enough to think about her more than ten minutes, she’s not on my mind and nor is he

As ever, a post that’s completely on the money

The jokes made lots of people very uncomfortable and embarrassed so am not sure how that is putting people at ease.

The other point is that these ‘jokes’ and inappropriate comments were made whilst he was working so there was no excuse but more importantly was the power imbalance. There’s no comeback for the person who may feel uncomfortable or others involved.

He reminded me of my Dad who I lost two years ago, a wonderful man. My parents married in the same year. He was loyal and supportive to his wife and got on with his job, just like my dear dad.

A few nasty comments about him being a racist. It's very unlikely when you see all the work he did with people everywhere.
Has no one a sense of humour these days. The jokes put people at their ease.

Did he ever apologise for shooting a tiger?

heath480 Tue 13-Apr-21 01:53:52

He meant nothing to me.I loathe and detest racism and he was a racist.

BlueSky Tue 13-Apr-21 00:39:53

Regardless of what he means to us or the fact that he reached the ripe old age of nearly 100, he was somebody’s beloved husband, and she’ll miss him dreadfully, like any other widow. flowers

The only ‘business’ in the H of L today was tributes to PP. Attendance in person was worth £323 and making a tribute by video call netted £162. Not bad for a few minutes ‘work’.

20,000 solo engagements in 73 years is 273 engagements per year. Given an engagement in royal terms means unveiling a plaque, cutting a ribbon or shaking a few hands per day doesn’t sound much like hard work to me.
Regardless of my views that the monarchy is anti democratic and outdated, Philip did what he thought was his best, and I have sympathy for the family as I do for anyone bereaved, but especially as their grief is made public.

Not a thing. I think the fuss being made is totally out of step with the prevailing feelings of the public.

And 7 hours in the H of C - some of the things said about him with such fawning approval just reminded me how rude and unprofessional he could be whilst supposedly doing his job.

Buffy why do you think it acceptable to be so incredibly unpleasant to Amber by posting this

‘ Layabouts”, the Royal family probably work harder than you and are definitely more of an asset than you.’

You know nothing about her snd have no right to make such a personal attack.

Some very bitter people on this thread....

Bitter? Or commenting on things he said that hurt others?

I COULD have said some very sycophantic people on this thread, but didn't because it would have spoiled the discussion of the thread.

Nothing - a man who led a charmed life paid for by the taxpayers.

BlueBelle Mon 12-Apr-21 23:12:03

polarbear how can you excuse racism by saying he was ‘of that generation’ my dad was only a bit younger and would have never said or thought any of the things Duke of E said My grandad was the generation before and would have been so upset to hear people called racist names he fought at the age of 16 (yes he altered his birth certificate) and was in France in WW1 and a special policeman in WW2 he ended up later with a best friend who was German and loved visiting the family in Germany Thats a real man, not someone who is so insensitive to others feelings

Mapleleaf Mon 12-Apr-21 21:29:49

He meant the same to me as I did to him - nothing.
However, to his family, he meant a lot.

Anniebach Mon 12-Apr-21 20:47:06

did you get your result you wanted.

merlotgran Mon 12-Apr-21 20:29:38

Surely Prince Charles went to Gordonstoun in 1962?

Anniebach Mon 12-Apr-21 20:21:17

Is it fair to criticise Phillip for sending Charles to Gordonstoun
in 1958 ? Yes it was the wrong school for a sensitive 14 year old
but Phillip , who had a tough upbringing and no parents from a young age to love him .
and were people so aware of sensitivity in boys in the 1950’s ?

Nonogran Mon 12-Apr-21 20:18:56

Nothing!
But I'm sad for his loss to the family who loved him. The same as I am for any family who has lost a loved one this last year or so.
God rest their souls.
