Cream or jam first

Sainsbury’s have upset Cornwall by showing an advert for scones with the jam on top of the cream. How do you do yours? We are not Cornish but we do put the jam on first and then the cream, it is easier and just seems right.

Er, who said cream takes the place of the butter? Scone, butter, jam, cream! If you are indulging, indulge properly!!

I have to agree with another poster that clotted cream does not sink in, and it takes the place of butter. Having lived in Devon for 45 years , I have never even tried putting jam first!!

I grew up in Devon, maternal grandparents Cornish, paternal grandparents Devonian.
It was always a slight bone of contention when everyone together and scones served !
Have to say I prefer jam first.

When I lived in Derbyshire, I put jam on first, whether it was fruit or plain scone. Now I'm in Cornwall, it's always clotted cream.

Biggest advantage of jam first, is that you can spread a good layer of jam over the whole half and then spread the cream over the top. A dollop of jam on top of the cream, stays as a dollop. Very difficult to spread it around. Jam and cream must reach the edge for me.

My favourite is scone - jam - clotted cream - halved strawberry.

Of course, each half of the scone has to be treated the same. Never make a scone sandwich shock

Never make a scone sandwich shock

I agree!
The jam and cream would squish out of the scone and how would you fit a whole decent sized scone into your mouth anyway?
shock

It never was a Scottish thing, but I took to it when I migrated south. I'd never put the cream on before the jam.

Which ever is the nearest to me, the jam or the cream. It tastes the same and goes down the same!

BlueSky Wed 28-Apr-21 11:21:02

I never eat scones, far too much fat and sugar. But you’ve got me thinking....confused

Fishpieplease Wed 28-Apr-21 11:23:20

Jam,jam, jam. As a child in Cornwall,it was always splits, not scones. I would so like to see a proper split revival in Cornwall and Devon.

Callistemon Wed 28-Apr-21 12:03:06

Splits are good too.

But scones have the edge!

Mapleleaf Wed 28-Apr-21 12:06:24

Jam first then the cream. ?

Farmor15 Wed 28-Apr-21 12:16:23

I agree with Kittylester- butter, jam and cream on top!

I've been making scones for the last few days to go with the rhubarb and ginger jam I made - yum smile

Grannybags Wed 28-Apr-21 12:45:42

Just to add - I eat scones, as in cones, not scones as in gone..... wink

hazel93 Wed 28-Apr-21 12:50:15

Oh no !!!
Another one intent on stirring it !!

B9exchange Wed 28-Apr-21 13:00:17

My Scottish ancestry insists on scone as in gone. I think we have now resurrected the other argument... grin

Loislovesstewie Wed 28-Apr-21 13:20:03

I eat scone as in gone too.

Noooo!

The gone-v-cone thing brought to mind an event I attended about 30 years ago, the opening of a new gastropub. It was owned by Ind Coop, and there was always confusion of how to pronounce "Ind". So a leaflet was handed out to everyone which said that we should pronounce "Ind" as in "wind" as opposed to "Ind" as in "wind" . We never did get to find out the proper pronunciation, but it's given me a good ice-breaker in conversations for years!

gulligranny Wed 28-Apr-21 14:23:34

Oh and I forgot to say that it's jam then cream unless I have got some clotted cream, in which case that goes on first.

EllanVannin Wed 28-Apr-21 14:26:43

Always jam first for me, which reminds me I must get some clotted cream and do my own.
