Cream or jam first

Sainsbury’s have upset Cornwall by showing an advert for scones with the jam on top of the cream. How do you do yours? We are not Cornish but we do put the jam on first and then the cream, it is easier and just seems right.

As several people have said, the high-fat clotted cream should go on first to act like butter. Jam soaks into the scone. My brought-up-in-Devon mother didn’t do it like that, though.

I'm from a Devon family so of course it absolutely has to be cream first!

My Mum was Devonian , like me, and my Dad was Cornish. I’d never heard such twaddle as having jam on the cream. It was, is, and always will be cream on top of the jam xxx

Speaking as another from Devon, it’s cream first - reasons could be -
Like as has been said, cream is acting as the butter and after all
it looks prettier - some cream and a blob of jam in the middle

Having grown up in Scotland I would never even dream of putting cream on a scone.

I eat mine with butter or with butter and jam.

Has to be cream first surely!!!

Always Devon clotted cream first spread over about half an inch thick (at least) to stabilise the top then a dollop of jam on top.

TillyWhiz Fri 30-Apr-21 11:04:45

Uh oh, here I go. Wiltshire - butter, then jam, then cream!

Butter first then a thin layer of jam (don't like very sweet stuff) then a big dollop of cream.

Neilspurgeon0 Fri 30-Apr-21 11:08:37

Butter, then jam, then cream, then more cream, then another scone.

Yammy Fri 30-Apr-21 11:13:17

We never put cream on at all when little. Butter then jam if you"Needed" it. Also pronunciation of scone? I say it with a had lower case" o " DSil from the south says it softer
Pasties crimped around the side at home and in shops at school crimped along the top maybe the teacher wasn't local.

Jam first. Cream on top in a dollop.

Whatever you enjoy best- there are no rules. Just enjoy.

Cream first, this thread is making me fancy one!

olliebeak Fri 30-Apr-21 11:16:59

Personally speaking, I don't like putting the jam onto the 'dry scone'.

My method is to spread a thin layer of Clotted Cream (OR butter) directly onto the scone.

- 2nd some jam.

- Finally add the beautiful dollop of Clotted Cream on the top!

If it's served to you as a 'Cream Tea' - surely it comes with all it's components in separate ramekins. THAT way, it's entirely up to the customer to assemble their Scone in whatever way suits their individual preference.

The customer is ALWAYS right wink.

ps - I was brought up to believe that it's extremely bad manners to look at, OR comment on, what was on another person's plate - OR on how they ate.

Butter, then jam, then cream!
If there is no butter, use the clotted cream as butter, with jam on top/

Daisend1 Fri 30-Apr-21 11:25:01

Matter of taste but much prefer the jam on first.

cupcake1 Fri 30-Apr-21 11:27:08

Somerset lass here - always thin layer of butter, jam then cream on top! Sorry there is no other way ??!

Alioop Fri 30-Apr-21 11:40:43

Jam first, I find the cream sits better on it. Sorry if I've caused offence to anyone....

greenlady102 Fri 30-Apr-21 11:42:39

neither yuck.

Treetops05 Fri 30-Apr-21 12:02:08

I'm from Devon, cream first in place of butter (you can still pile it on), then the jam. I don't overly like jam, far too sweet so ideal for me!

Marg75 Fri 30-Apr-21 12:29:58

I'm Cornish so its jam first. Definitely nice to put the cream on the top, as you can really taste especially if its Cornish Clotted Cream!!

nipsmum Fri 30-Apr-21 12:30:40

I love cheese scones and am diabetic so no jam or cream for me.

Cliftonkate Fri 30-Apr-21 12:33:16

Anyone stressing over which way round to eat a scone really needs to give their head a wobble ! Just eat it ?

Bazza Fri 30-Apr-21 12:54:04

Definitely cream first for me. In my mind the cream is a butter substitute so it’s obvious! Anyway, whatever floats your boat. It all goes down the same way.
