Cream or jam first

Sainsbury’s have upset Cornwall by showing an advert for scones with the jam on top of the cream. How do you do yours? We are not Cornish but we do put the jam on first and then the cream, it is easier and just seems right.

Can't stand either, so just Flora marge for me, as long as the scones are plain, no fruit

I'm different from most in that butter goes on first then jam topped with cream. If not a cream scone, no way could I eat a scone with just jam.

My old Dad, didn't stand on ceremony for anything, he would eat ham butties for breakfast, apple pie anytime (which I used to have to vet, as he wouldn't put it in the fridge, I'd find it mouldy and his answer would be "oh just cut off the bit that's bad, never had these problems in my younger days"!! Then his final words would be "it doesn't matter which you eat first it all ends up together in your belly, so just enjoy it as you eat it"
So I know what he would say about this debate......eat and enjoy whichever way you want to.

I must admit to being a Devonshire girl - cream first (as it resembles butter to me, being a Canadian*), then jam.

*While I live in Canada and a proper cream tea isn't a thing here, we have visited Britain twice as Hubby is an ex-pat. I have had a proper cream tea while we were there.

Jam then cream, but no butter. The cream ‘sticks’ on better with jam underneath.

I generally decide which to put on first according to the consistency of the cream when it is served. Proper clotted cream is like butter and I would put that on first but often it is more like thick double cream, in which case it has to go on last. I always eat the two halves separately, in order to consume as much jam and cream as possible. Sorry, very piggy l know!

no jam or cream just butter

Truly find it amazing that anyone would get their knickers in a twist over this - Devon or Cornish knickers. Really? lol

Butter, jam and cream for me.

Callistemon Fri 30-Apr-21 21:20:56

It is very serious indeed

Bonny12 Fri 30-Apr-21 21:26:00

Jam first, otherwise it all gets too messy.

(Real) butter, strawberry jam, topped off with Rhodda's clotted cream on a PLAIN scone. This is correct.

Jam then cream.

We serve scones for teas for the National Garden Scheme openings of our garden.

My husband makes the scones, we cut them in half, butter them, jam them, and as the customers ask for them put on whipped cream and a half of a strawberry on on each half of the scone. Every one is happy. No one has ever asked for them in a different order but we are not using clotted cream. Some times they do not want butter or cream.

If you are using real clotted cream then the cream has to go on first as it takes the place of butter. Absolutely scrumptious, any cream less than clotted just doesn't seem right.

I watched that etiquette expert (William Hanson) on TV at the weekend. He said there are far more important issues than jam or cream first, the main one being that you should never CUT the scone in half. You should always break it apart.

I think it might be fun to serve up a cream tea to all the G7 people in Cornwall this month. Not quite sure what they would make of it!

I think etiquette has very little to do with scoffing scones, Ellianne grin

Jam first then the cream.

lemongrove Mon 03-May-21 13:32:56

The power of advertising ( GN posts) as I have just ordered some M&S scones, jam and clotted cream.?

lemongrove Mon 03-May-21 13:35:36

Can you imagine the mess Elliane if they are all breaking their scones apart?
A plug for the best cream tea in Devon...Marwood Hill Gardens in North Devon. Not only are the gardens heavenly but you have to have the cream tea.
Please don’t sue me if the cook has changed though.

I'd rather have a Welsh cake, spread with butter. Delicious!

M0nica Mon 03-May-21 14:34:43

Does it matter? It tastes the same which ever way you spread it.

I remember learning that cutting a bread roll was ‘lower class’, but I didn’t know it applied to scones.
Breaking apart some I’ve had would leave me with a pile of crumbs and nothing to spread my jam and cream on either way.
