The smell of weed from neighbouring properties is getting really bad, so bad that we can smell it in our home if we have doors or windows open.

I have a friend in his 70s. He's smoked weed sinc the 1960s. He was a professional for all of his working life and is a very mild mannered guy. No life ruined. A productive member of society.

I don't smoke. Cigs or weed. But it doesn't bother me that he likes a spliff. Live and let live.

I like the smell of week, but not resin. Too strong.

I think the new varieties of the plants are much stronger smelling than in the 70's. It can be smoked in public much like cigarettes, away from entrances or restaurants. I agree it stinks.

There is a different smell from growing it to smoking it, a skunky smell. (I just realized you don't have skunks in the British Isles). The plants are quite strong smelling, and those that are serious about their plants will have fans to ventilate the smell from either greenhouse or growlight area of their home. We have someone in the neighbourhood growing and I can smell it when I step outside sometimes. Maybe it's just when the oils in the leaves are stronger when the plant is ready to harvest that it smells, because it is not all the time.

You can ask your neighbour to smoke away from windows, or even get a fan to blow it the other direction. Good luck.

Smoking weed for personal use is not illegal in the UK nor is possession of a small number of plants for personal use. I think we have to accept that these are are now "lifestyle" differences and unless combined with other anti social activities (noise, violence etc) the police are not going to do anything about it.

There are entire areas of the city where I live where I reckoned I was the only non smoker (not only of weed but also tobacco). For this reason I would have been an obvious suspect if I had snitched.

Being suspected of snitching is not pleasant in such neighbourhoods and I would think very carefully about contacting authorities unless there are other factors at play.

You will also find that landlords are very reluctant to become involved in neighbourhood disputes unless there is very strong evidence that the lease has been broken. Private landlords usually do not want to risk harassment charges. Im talking multiple complaints from several parties, witness statements, cctv footage, diary evidence etc. Evicting someone from a housing association is quite difficult on anti social grounds.

You may simply have to put up and shut up.

Not all alcohol drinkers become alcohol drinkers become alcoholics, but some do and it ruins their lives. It is just the same with cannabis- some people can smoke weed with no issues, for others it causes serious mental health problems.
If it was happening next door I would speak to the local police and children services- no need to 'report- just make an enquiry as to to what can be done, if anything.
Also ring the local council.
You shouldn't just have to put up with it and it is still classed as an illegal drug, due to it being grown illegally often in empty properties and used by modern slave traffickers as well.
My brother has just been moved to an alternative rental property because he complained about his neighbours.
People do listen, don't just put up with it.

Think of all those people in the 60s who smoked dope and think about how many of them have moved on to hard drugs. Not that many.

Smoke of any kind is pretty horrid - you have my sympathy - not sure you can do a lot if it’s ‘legal’ ish. Are the kids otherwise ok - ? As far as I am aware it is a lot safer for kids than tobacco smoke and alcohol though - in the first case not as carcinogenic and in the second doesn’t lead to violence . Does it lead to more dangerous drug use or neglect of children ? That maybe a concern but I have no idea whether this is true .

My neighbour grows one in his greenhouse, it looks very health and vigorous, growing out through the window.

He smokes it in his shed.

I have clearly led a sheltered life. I don't know what cannabis smoke smells like. Is it unpleasant?

It can't be any worse than a neighbour's pipe-smoking many years ago, it reeked. My dad used to say he must be smoking old socks. Now that was vile ! His teeth were like the sea wall.

Having a BBQ or using a wood burner is legal, smoking cannabis is not. I amazed at how blase people are about the use of cannabis. I am sure those that are blase would be outraged if a drug driver knocked their Granchild over.

I really dislike the smell of barbeques which is nearly every day in the summer. However, I do not feel I could complain even though I have to shut my windows.

I don't mind the smell of weed. The kids in the park near me smoke there (well, I say kids, they're older teenagers and adults).

I do object to the strong smell of smoke from all the wood burners around me though. I also sleep with my bedroom window open, and some nights the smoke smell is so strong I have got up to check if there is a fire in the building.

I think that if they only have enough for their personal use then nothing is done. The police have better things to do than chase after dope smokers, such as finding and closing down meth amphetamine labs as they did last week.

This is why I said to speak to them first. In most cases, I would have thought that would be it. Otherwise, it is illegal and should be reported.

It seems all and sundry are smoking weed these days( I'm not by the way) but when I'm at work and have to go and "approve" age restricted items, the smell can be quiet sickening. I must smell it on people at least 4/5 times a day. Some a lot stronger than others and a variety of ages.

Also when driving behind a vehicle the smell drifts around (usually when they hang their fag out the window of the car) like that makes some kind of difference.

Is it the fact that it is weed which is causing consternation?
Around here, it is other people's wood burners. In the evenings, the smell permeates through even closed windows, to the extent that coming downstairs in the mornings, it can smell as if we have had a house-load of heavy smokers the night before.

Our past two houses our neighboours smoked weed in the garden. The young man next door would have one at 7.00am before work. Our daughter was quite a heavy weed smoker as well (now stopped) so we rather like the smell; takes us back to when she was at home before she went to Canada. Not a lot you can do really. Police will not do anything and neither will the council. Social services would only take action if child abuse was involved. They do not consider smoking ,even weed, as a reason for family intervention.

Does she rent or own the property? If rented then contact the letting agent. May need a bit of detective work here but not impossible. Her tenancy agreement may prohibit drug taking. If owned then contact Social Services. Children are there and weed is an illegal drug. I had this problem in my previous house. We had tiny back gardens and I couldn't even sit outside. I went and spoke to the tenants. 1 girl and 2 boys. She was lovely but the boys considered me a miserable old fart from their expressions. Nothing changed so I tracked down the letting agent and as they had broken their tenancy agreement they had to stop smoking weed or move on. 3 months later they left.

Hmm. Not in my experience! Slightly sweet smell I’d say.

Have a chat first if you can, if that gets nowhere and they’re breaking Covid rules, report it, because of the‘many visitors’ just mention a strong smell of weed.
