Always Think Twice About Naming A Child.

During my 91 years on this earth I have met many folk with names that conjure up various thoughts as to WHY the parents had not really thought about the consequences of naming their off spring.
Below is a rhyme I wrote concerning some folk I have worked with during my life. No doubt many who reads this will know of someone they have come across in their lives with a name that could be more than embarrassing for the person so named.

NAME THIS CHILD

During all my years on earth I have heard many a peculiar name
Did parents think that this would help bring their offspring fame?
I have lived next door to a Dickie Bird and a Dusty Miller too
And I used to know an Ida Downe believe me this is true

There was an Ivor Lott a Will Power and a Robin Hood
Also Rusty Locke and Blackie Smith and a girl named Bebe Goode
I have worked with Eva Stone and Lydia Potts and an Eileen Back
All of them have had to live with such a great amount of flak.

There was another girl I worked with whose name was May Trump
You can well imagine how she felt and why she often had the hump.
One name imprinted on my mind from many years gone by
Was of a girl starting work and I swear that this is no lie,

Of all the names that I had heard this was the unkindest of all
When the boss asked her for her name she answered Ophelia Ball.
The look of horror on his face was a picture to behold
It left a vivid memory in my mind that I have often told.

So Mums and Dads pick a name to do your children proud
And when asked what it is they will shout it clear and loud.

Boy in my class Fergus Ferguson. I wonder how long it took his parents to choose it.

A dd had a friend whose parents evidently thought it amusing to name her Polly Esther Cotton.

It isn't always the parents; my stepfather knew a girl named Henrietta, she later got married to a chap whose surname was Bone!!

I once taught twins whose surname was Hall. Their first names were Victoria and Albert!

A former work colleague had a granddaughter called Polly Plonka (her dad was Polish). I had a friend called Margery Dawe, and a neighbour called Mary Lamb whose brother is called Jack Horner.

I knew of a man called Isaac Pead who lived in Pond Lane.

Great poem Maywalk. Did you really know all those people personally, or is there a bit of artistic licence?

Yes Grandma KT I knew them all.
I either worked with them or met them at some time or other through my life.

I went to school with Crispian Oates. I also knew a Jo King but that was through marriage rather than parents, and I went to primary school with Michael Michael, although as he was from Cyprus I suspect he may have been Michael Michaelides.

Surely Rusty Lock and Blackie Smith were nicknames?

There are also names to match occupations.
I knew a Mr Berry---a funeral director.

In DH's youth, the name of a local business man was Mr Sole. He called his children; Rebecca and Richard. Think initial letter and surname. DH was at school with them.

When I was growing up, I knew a Johnny Johns, a Tommy Thomas and a Willy Williams. I have taught a Pakistani lad called Dowd Dowd. I think it shows a distinct lack of imagination. When naming a child you also need to think of the initials. Think JCB, OCD and HRT!

This bloke was a doctor which wasn’t too helpful. He didn’t pronounce it as ‘death’ of course !

We had a OBGyn here in town called Dr. David Vine, and he happened to be very handsome. My husband worked at the hospital in maintenance, and he would chuckle when he heard paging 'Dr. D. Vine'

I knew a Jamaican neighbour growing up called Florister Gardiner. She was a Mrs. so went ahead with the name change.

My mother went out briefly, before marriage to my dad, with an undertaker’s son in Blackpool. His family was called Box.
