I heard that it was a microphone he placed on women's shoulders and pretended it was his penis. Not sure if it was a very large or very small microphone. Whatever the truth of it it was an unpleasant thing to do and obviously a form of abuse.

I don't think it was that long ago, from what I've read it was when when Christopher Eccleston took over the lead. I was looking through the thread on MN about this, and one poster mooted that CE who was excellent in the role did only one season, there was no suggestion that his behaviour was anything but exemplary but maybe he couldn't stand all the "tomfoolery" which is the understated way John Barrowman described his indecent exposure> Maybe that contributed to his early departure decision because he was well received in the role. It seems that many of the woman who were a butt of his tomfoolery were either behind the scenes, wardrobe, runners etc. or had minor roles in the series, and as such would have possibly found it too intimidating to speak out. I did hear some comments from the production team, along the lines of "getting his willy out was his bit of fun", it seems he did it frequently, for a grown man he sounds as if has some sort of arrested development behavioural problems, the way very little boys find the word "willy" funny, but even little boys know not to get it out! I agree Luckylegs really unacceptable behaviour imo!

I have seen the clip of the Dr Who convention when the incident was discussed. It was relatively recent.

The women involved, who are mature actresses who have achieved some level of success in their profession, were clearly uncomfortable discussing it but obviously felt unable to speak out, probably for the very same reasons they did/said nothing at the time.

When women are sexually abused by a man - and I consider what Barrowman did was such abuse - the reaction is often disbelief and fear. I know I may not have had the courage to speak up in the same circumstances, particularly when my current job and potentially my future career could be at stake. Men who speak up or criticise are seen as brave, women who do so are seen as difficult or trouble-makers.

The fact that they would have been speaking out and hence causing trouble for a man who was an important part of a very popular TV show and who was gay would just have made it all the more difficult.

If you search for what Christopher Ecclestone said about why he left the show and read between the lines, it seems clear that it was Barrowman's character, influence on the producers and “antics” were a major factor. And probably that no-one at the production company was prepared to do anything about it.

Yes I suspect Christopher Ecclestone was being a decent man.

I used to like him as I was a fan of Torchwood. To be honest Im really beginning to wonder if the whole BBC organisation needs looked at. First Saville and now all this. What more isn't being talked about? Ive went right off John Barrowman.

Thanks trisher I have seen the microphone excuse a lot. I knew it wasnt accurate because of the numerous incidents of exposure but couldnt work out where it came from.

Reading the link provided by Trisher, his behaviour sounded appalling, how can he describe continually exposing himself and actually touching people with his dick as a way of entertaining his colleagues. The actress who had his willy put on her shoulder, was having her make up done at the time so kind of held captive, gross!!!!

Yes I read that Noel Clark was demonstrating with a microphone what Barrowman actually did with his penis. They are both in the wrong, but it seems Barrowman was the main culprit. How strange that an adult man should behave like a 15 year old juvenile and think it could be perceived as tomfoolery by other adults. It sounds as though his mental and social development stopped in his mid teens.

It is very obvious that the actress who played Rose Tyler's mum was deeply uncomfortable.
