The House of your dreams

What would it be like? One of my daughter's friends has just built the house of her dreams. It is massive, built in sandstone on a couple of acres and each of her 3 children has their own private sitting room, bathroom and bedroom. I don't think I'd actually like that ( not that I could afford it anyway). I like rustic type houses with privacy and a good view . No roads in sight, preferably.

Love our cottage but if it was next to a beach or lake it would be even better ?

Ealdemodor Wed 19-May-21 13:27:45

A house near plenty of shops, amenities and a bus stop, and which never has plumbing problems would be good!
We have had many issues with plumbing over the years, and I am waiting for a plumber as we write.

Ohh a Huf Haus for me too. Ultra modern mostly glass.
That’s my dream but it will have to wait till I win the lottery.
?

I was beginning to think it was only me who loves them ?

A library with a bathroom and kitchen attached...I'd be in heaven

M0nica Wed 19-May-21 13:37:04

Treetops - and I will be in the next door library/kitchen/bathroom combo. As you say I'd be in the seventh heaven.

Designing my dream house is something I do in my head to try to get off to sleep if I have an overactive mind at night. It does work !

I saw my dream house on Rightmove a few weeks ago, only a few miles from where I live now. It's got five bedrooms, an open plan kitchen/living/dining area, a utility room, a separate living room, a study, two downstairs loos, one bathroom and two en-suites, A LIFT!, a double garage with a games room above, and a wine cellar underneath. Also a beautiful, secluded, garden. Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to win the lottery - it's £2m! [Hmmm]

A small apartment on the Spanish island that I love. A sea view would be lovely with a balcony and a patio where I could have some plants and pots. Bliss.

GagaJo Wed 19-May-21 16:51:16

While not my dream house, a very practical and lovely house came up on Right Move about six months ago. Right in the catchment for the school we want my DGS to go to. V sadly, I was in no position to sell/move. Shouldn't have looked really.

Gagajo Just the right place (not a dream place but practical) came up on RightMove although it needed updating but it was bad timing. Now SSTC.
It wasn't meant to be.

GagaJo Wed 19-May-21 16:56:57

Mine too. I loved it. It was so elegant and had the upstairs living room I hanker after. AND a converted soft.

Callistemon Wed 19-May-21 16:58:35

This wasn't a bit elegant but it was practical and could be made lovely.

Never mind - something else will come along I hope, for you too.

Where was it?

£2m (if you had it) could buy you anything from a small flat in London to an estate with a big house and rolling acres in somewhere more remote and beautiful.

Callistemon Wed 19-May-21 17:15:12

I only have £1.9 million unfortunately, just out of reach
sad
There is one near me for nearly £4 million shock

Ellianne Wed 19-May-21 17:18:35

Nightsky, Callistemon etc. These are for you from today. Sorry I didn't have time to pop into the estate agents.

Callistemon Wed 19-May-21 17:24:57

Thanks Ellianne

Is that the cottage we wanted to buy in the 1960s, I wonder?
So cheap but we couldn't afford it!

We almost have it! I'm not sure anyone has a "perfect" house! Ours is a three bedroomed bungalow on the road to John O'Groats, in a small village. The back of the house has wonderful views of a castle and the sea! Sadly, two large telephone poles are sited in the back garden - how we didn't see those when viewing I cannot imagine! As we lived 700 miles away before moving here, we couldn't view any more than once. The garden is big, but almost all grass - as the strong winds and sea air mean that flowers and trees are soon "windblown". In common with most houses when you move into them, it needs a new kitchen and bathroom, and we would love a Conservatory looking out at that amazing view! However, it may be some time before we can afford it. It has only been built 16 years, but everything is original and is now coming to the end of it's natural life. The gutters and downpipes want replacing, the windows are OK but could be better, the front door has some damage, there are not enough electric sockets, etc. etc. But that view cheers us up every day!

Callistemon Wed 19-May-21 17:30:22

It sounds lovely but I do know that sea air means more maintenance is needed from when we lived near the sea.

Kim19 Wed 19-May-21 17:37:33

It cleans and tidies itself

Lewie Wed 19-May-21 17:59:25

I'm living in it!!!

Near the sea would be great but and there is always a but, unless I could own the beach and prevent anyone from meandering along taking0 pictures it would be a non starter. A ranch type house with large wrap around verandah to protect from the elements in a secluded area would be fine.

I'm lucky, I've lived in MOnica's dream house for 40 years - 500 years old with a logburner, oak beams & no neighbours. Of course, I've got other dreams - I'd like much more light, a utility room, sea view, conservatory & a pool, with shops & restaurants in walking distance - we live in the middle of nowhere which is lovely but as we get older, not so convenient.

CanadianGran Thu 20-May-21 03:45:59

All yours sound so nice, I'd like to join in!
I have had to look up Huf Haus and inglenook, both of which are unfamiliar to me. Admirable, both!

Agree with sea view house, but I've always admired craftsman style, they seem so cosy to me. I also like many modern styles, since with windows are so large.

I live in a 60's boxy suburban, with a lovely ocean view, but unfortunately no beach nearby. All our waterfront is very industrial. So I can look at the ocean, in fact I was just watching some porpoises with my binoculars, but also have to listen to the odd train shunting back and forth while unloading to the grain silo nearby. Thankfully the tracks are quite a bit lower than us, so we can hear but not see them.

So yes to the beach house. One addition: a garage with automatic door so I can easily take out my bike.

To those of you who hanker after an upstairs living room, I did have one in my last house, in many ways it was lovely because we had views of the River Thames, however, a massive pain when I ordered a new sofa and the delivery men just couldn't get it into the living room it just wouldn't go round the the final twist of the stairs. It had to go back sad

I moved recently and reordered the sofa so it is now in my ground floor living room.

Like many I would love a house with a view of the sea, somewhere beautiful like Salcombe or Fowey. Never mind I'm in Dorset for a week right now with views of the sea, so that'll have to do!

Having lived in two period properties, one with 4 floors with the garden accessed via the basement, whilst our children were growing up we now live in a relatively modern bungalow. So pretty much got our dream as we have a lovely garden we can step straight from the kitchen and conservatory to.However I love house programmes like Building the dream. And often think how I would design our home even better from scratch. But definitely light, airy modern and with a fabulous view. Not necessarily coastal.I live in a hilly area and would like to look out on lots of greenery and wooded glades.
