This information was forwarded to me from a friend of a friend who is a police officer who was notified at work:

The latest WhatsApp update has automatically changed/made your groups open to everybody by default, so that people you don't know can add you to a group without your knowing. These people may include scammers, loan sharks etc.

You can change its default settings as follows:
1. Go to WhatsApp.
2. Settings.
3. Account.
4. Privacy.
5 .Groups.
6. Change from 'Everybody' to 'My Contacts'

I have looked at this now.
It basically allows people not in your contacts to add you to their group.

So, for example, I am part of a real life group where we decided once that we would have a WhatsApp group to stop having to communicate by sending email messages to a much wider group. None of these people were previously contacts of the "leader" or each other but she was able to set it up whilst we were on a zoom call.

I've also had a work situation where only one person out of 30 or so had access to the phone numbers and obviously no-one was in her contacts. I don't think she would have wanted her contacts cluttering up with this kind of stuff to be honest. I certainly wouldn't.

Obviously you can be "invited" into a group but this was so much easier.
