‘ The Revenant’ was one of these. Very boring.

Cabaret - all the hype beforehand was ridiculous.
Love Story - I thought that Ali McGraw's character came across as much nastier than in the book.
Lady Caroline Lamb was depressing - I actually felt quite sad leaving the cinema.

hollysteers

Hated Turner, Timothy Spaull grunted all the way through and Mamma Mia was an embarrassment.

I disliked Mrs Lowry as well as Turner, the latter being a huge disappointment as I went to see it expecting great things of it. However, in general I usually love anything that Timothy Spall does. I’ve never liked Mamma Mia but did watch the second one the other week, mainly because Cher was in it and she can do no wrong in my eyes.

I switched off La La Land on TV - another thumbs down ?
I decided to check out the dancing scene and even that was awful. It doesn't begin to compare with the old musicals!

The most overhyped film ever was ET. I was almost expecting an out of body experience from all the hype, so was actually disappointed with it.

Totally agree. I couldn't believe it when it won Best Picture.

I liked both of these, moreso Nomadland. I think what I liked was the non-judgmental, accepting interaction between the people who were living the nomad life. If only everyone was that way. ?

Mama Mia and Lady in a Van are two.
And going back too many years to think about, Papillon with Steve McQueen - four of us went to the cinema to watch it and all walked out after half an hour.
I cannot remember the last time I watched a film.

Oh yes, Moulin Rouge - dreadful film

GagaJo Tue 25-May-21 09:22:14

Moulin Rogue, too much of a lot of things and not enough actual plot.

Eyes Wide Shut. What a load of pap.

Bad Lieutenant. I honestly thought it was a spoof movie, Nicolas Cage was SO bad. His uncle, FF Copola should have done the world a favour and not encouraged his talentless nephew to act.

I liked the ‘Life of Pi’, too. I liked the very first Harry Potter film but the rest of them I thought were boring. Going back, I didn’t like the Da Vinci Code, it got on my nerves with people rushing around all the time.

I saw Nomadland last week. I love Frances McDormand. I can see why the film won Oscars but it is an unusual movie and although I enjoyed it, I wouldn't be surprised to see it mentioned on this thread.

La La Land - trash - overrated in my book

JenniferEccles Tue 25-May-21 08:37:16

To be honest, aren’t most over-hyped films disappointing these days especially those made in the last twenty/twenty five years?

The last film I saw which, in my opinion was well worth all the pre-released hype was Titanic!

Witzend Tue 25-May-21 08:18:17

Dunkirk, definitely yes.

The only bit of Les Mis I really liked, was Helena Bonham-C and Sacha Baron-Cohen doing that ‘Master of the House’ song - which was IMO brilliant.

The P&P with Keira Knightley, though to be fair I shouldn’t have gone at all since I doubted very much that anything would ever match up to the 90s Beeb version.

DanniRae Tue 25-May-21 07:43:56

Loved "Life of Pi"............didn't enjoy "Mama Mia".

Alima Tue 25-May-21 06:53:43

Hardly ever go to the cinema, maybe two or three times this century. Made an exception for Dunkirk. So disappointed, seemed more about the “artyness” than the event.

BigBertha1 Tue 25-May-21 06:36:14

Last of the Mohicans
Cool Runnings
Maverick

Generally I ignore the critics we never seem to agree on what a good film is...esp M Kermode.

Lucca Tue 25-May-21 06:35:26

The last Lord of the Rings one ....it went on and on and on. Every time I thought it was over off it went again
Greatest showman also, didnt even like the music.

Oldwoman70 Tue 25-May-21 06:21:50

Another vote for The Greatest Showman and Mama Mia - I usually like musicals but not those two!

BlueBelle Tue 25-May-21 05:50:26

I loved Life of Pi too and didn’t mind Peterloo

MayBee70 Tue 25-May-21 00:06:40

I’ve yet to finish watching Peterloo on dvd (keep falling asleep). Glad I didn’t go to the cinema to watch it.

MayBee70 Tue 25-May-21 00:05:16

I loved Life of Pi. DH hated it.

MaizieD Tue 25-May-21 00:03:01

Mama Mia. Glad I saw it free on video, not paid for at a cinema. Awful... (it didn't have to be high brow films, did it?)

Close Encounters of a Third Kind (such a long long time ago, I know) very boring...

But I must confess to not being a great cinema goer, anyway.

Eloethan Mon 24-May-21 23:55:56

I was looking forward to Peterloo but was very disappointed.

The same with Atonement. It got fabulous reviews but I thought it was dreadful.

I thought Avatar was boring, and the one Harry Potter film that I've seen seemed to drag on for ever.

On the other hand, someone up thread said they hated Life of Pi and I thought it was a beautiful film.

MayBee70 Mon 24-May-21 21:06:28

The scene with the horse was amazing albeit not very good for the horse. I must rewatch it.
