Congratulations to Boris and Carrie who got married today in Westminster Catholic Cathedral. Just that really. I love weddings, doesn't matter who the couple are, I always hope it works out happily.

He must have made a full confession beforehand, wonder how long that took!

ginny Sun 30-May-21 13:21:10

I just hope this time he has found the right person and they will be happy.
As for the ‘hyporcrites’remark above , there are plenty of them in the catholic church and many other religions.

She looks like something out of The Wicker Man. Still it’s good to be able to recycle old tablecloths and she is supposed to be a conservationist.
- hilarious. !
I wore a dress like that in the 70s - very ageing hippie

Rules are :-
2 baptised people - 1 a Catholic
Previous marriages of divorcé weren't in Catholic churches so therefore not recognised by church
Says BBC

Try that reasoning if you're an ordinary person. I was married in a Registry Office but after my divorce was refused I was Communion on the grounds that I was a divorcee. The Church made it very clear that my Registry Office wedding counted. There is no way the Church would allowed me to marry in my parish church let alone Westminster Cathedral.

I don't care about them getting married. But I object to the Catholic hierarchy bending the rules to allow the marriage in church.

The other point about a Catholic PM. A Catholic can be PM but it raises questions when he/she advises the monarch on ecclesiastical matters as the C of E and RC don't agree on all points.

I agree with you and had the same experience.

Re Boris being a Catholic I thought he renounced Catholicism and became C of E either at Eton or Oxford, can't remember which.

I am all for people in the public eye, keeping their private life private...

As our Queen says never complain, never explain...

A wedding isn't private and the insult to other Catholics who have been denied a church wedding isn't private either.

I think I will be contacting my parish priest to ask if I can now, after nearly 40 years have a church wedding.

It might all be gossip and speculation to some but it is heartbreaking to others.

this, totally.

A couple have just got married and are obviously very happy, is it absolutely necessary to bring politics into it, question the validity of the wedding and make the customary derogatory remarks that appear from certain quarters whenever the Prime Ministers name is mentioned. Surely just for one occasion it would be possible to wish them well, and swallow all that bile. I wish the same to any couples who got married yesterday regardless of their politics, religion ethnic origin, choice of venue. I hope all these unions are happy ones and that they all had a day to remember for the rest of their lives. My second wedding was in a Register Office, but since then I know of several couples who had their second weddings in church, it did not and does not bother me in the slightest.

Good for you. Some of us wanted to marry in the church and were denied that so I couldn't care less if he is the PM or a street sweeper but I do care that he has been allowed something that I was denied.

Yes i say that as someone who escaped being branded as a Catholic as my 2 brothers had.
Everything can be confessed and forgiven in the Catholic Church.

Whatdayisit Sun 30-May-21 13:36:13

I know so many couples denied being married in C of E ceremonies too because of previous marriages then the same rule overlook for Meghan and Harry. Then she had the audacity to scorn her wedding when so many couples have been denied it. Makes my blood boil these religious pious clubs.

I think her powers of reasoning are absolutely sound. She is able to live a most luxurious lifestyle at absolutely no cost to herself or her new spouse.

Indeed, MaizieD.
As Johnson is a completely self-centred individual, I guess that is also the type of person who might find him attractive.

They can't have a cost-free lifestyle forever, though.

Marrying a divorcee pails into significance compared to the sins and atrocities carried out under the shield of Catholicism over the years...

Well many sins and atrocities were carried out under the shield of the human race. Maybe we should all opt out, I mean all the good people, all the good work doesn't count for anything for humans in general or Catholics in particular.

They do say that when a man marries his mistress, it creates a job vacancy.

flaxwoven Sun 30-May-21 14:01:31

A widowed friend of ours, a Catholic, wanted to marry a divorced man but was told they could not marry in a Catholic church as he had been married before in a C of E church. So they lived together for 18 years until he finally decided to become Catholic and they got married. So have the Catholic church's rules changed?

It isn't only Catholics who have committed sins and it isn't only the Catholic church who have covered up wrong doing although it does seem to be the target of choice for many.

Whatever you think they both look very happy and in love in this photo

Ready to hop into bed!

So many sins and atrocities are carried out under the shield of the human race, and many of them by no means are under the shield of Catholicism. What about all the war that went on in Iraq with killing of innocent people and children and many of the guns supplied under the ruling of Tony Blair. How many children do you think go hungry in the U.K this very day and suffer violence and abuse by their parents behind closed doors perhaps more people should look to have that wiped out and abused children should get their lives back. I do not like to see all that sort of stuff blamed on the Catholic church.

Oh just to get back to the wedding ceremony what a lovely day they had and Good Luck !!!!!! after all everyone loves a
charismatic philanderer jolly good old boy all those marriages and affairs not forgetting the children. It certainly was a whirlwind when he divorced wife no 1 and married wife no2 within 12 days just in time for wife no2s baby arriving.

This thread is about Mr. & Mrs Johnson’s marriage in a Catholic Cathedral, it is the Catholic Church and its principals/rules that are being discussed.

I am sure we could have another thread regarding the sins of mankind?

I don't understand either.
We are discussing specifically what is and is not allowed by the Catholic Church, not universal sins, wars etc.

They do say that when a man marries his mistress, it creates a job vacancy.

It was James Goldsmith who said it.

Goldsmith also founded The Referendum Party in 1997.

I can't think of a pithy or witty punchline to conclude this post! smile

How to twist someone's post

GrannyGravy13 Sun 30-May-21 14:19:24

theworriedwell if twisting my post makes you feel better about yourself and superior go ahead enjoy!

For the purpose of truth and clarity I do not think that the marriage of Mr. & Mrs. Johnson yesterday was an atrocity.
