Congratulations to Boris and Carrie who got married today in Westminster Catholic Cathedral. Just that really. I love weddings, doesn't matter who the couple are, I always hope it works out happily.

Sneaky - I thought it was next July.
Who do you speculate who the witnesses were? Gove? Sunak? Hancock? Starmer?
???

One too many ‘who’...where’s the edit button?

I suspect that a lot of Catholic priests will be very perturbed by this news, there have already been several who have taken to Twitter to express their concerns about the impact this news will have on people within the Catholic Church who have been denied a second marriage.

In fact there is no need of ‘annulment’ as BJ has not previously been married according to Catholic custom and therefore his previous marriages were ‘invalid’ in the eyes of the RC church. His children from previous marriages are legitimate as they were born of marriages that were legal.

Carrie is a Catholic and Wilfred was christened there.

Boris was raised a Catholic but he married his previous 2 wives in non Catholic ceremonies and therefore, in Catholic eyes, he hasn’t been married before so this is his first wedding.

Thanks for the explanation.

It's ridiculous 'reasoning' on the part of the Catholic Church, though.

who cares

FarNorth Sat 29-May-21 23:10:42

His children from previous marriages are legitimate as they were born of marriages that were legal.

But are they legitimate, or do they even exist at all, in the eyes of the Catholic Church?

MayBee70 Sat 29-May-21 23:12:10

But I thought the Catholic Church didn’t agree with abortion, adultery or divorce?

Nandalot Sat 29-May-21 23:15:14

My D.S. who was baptised a Catholic had to prove his first marriage was annulled before he could marry in a Roman Catholic Church. His first marriage was in a registry office not a church. He would not have been allowed to marry in church if he had been divorced, This was a Spanish church but I assume the rules are the same for Catholics everywhere.

Did it feature Dilyn the dog?

What a mockery of marriage. Marry the mistress create a vacancy is the old saying, how true but one of them has to be the last due to age.
I don't know why anyone keeps getting married, all those vows mean nothing.

maddyone Sat 29-May-21 23:43:20

Congratulations to them, assuming it’s true.

Deedaa Sat 29-May-21 23:54:28

How charming he is! If he has married in church on the grounds that his first marriages were not in catholic churches, not only has he divorced his ex wives but he has demonstrated that they don't even exist. His other children may be legal but he obviously doesn't care that they are now illegitimate in the eyes of the church. Typical of the man - me, me, me.

Has Carrie actually thought all this through? Why is she tying herself to this oaf? I suppose she's got to protect the baby's rights when they split up.

Congratulations and best wishes Carrie and Boris! flowers

FarNorth Sun 30-May-21 00:34:30

I don't understand why any woman would be remotely interested in this oaf.
Since Carrie is interested in him, I'm very dubious about her powers of reasoning.

vegansrock Sun 30-May-21 04:57:21

She obviously wanted a ring on it.

Oldwoman70 Sun 30-May-21 07:05:54

Don't think this pair could win no matter what they did. If they had a big wedding there would be comments about who paid for it, Carrie's dress sense, seeking publicity, etc. They decide to have a quiet wedding and still there are unpleasant comments. I would rather wish them luck and happiness for the future as I would for any couple.

vegansrock Sun 30-May-21 07:07:22

I wonder if those gushing over the wedding are the same ones who claim no interest in Johnson’s’s private life.

eazybee Sun 30-May-21 07:11:23

I am glad they have got married and I wish them well.

nanna8 Sun 30-May-21 07:18:50

Good luck to them. I didn't know he was a Catholic.

FannyCornforth Sun 30-May-21 07:35:06

Boris's mother is Catholic and he was baptised as Catholic.
He became Anglican when at Eton.
Carrie was baptised as Catholic.
A Catholic cannot be Prime Minister.
You may recall that Blair became RC after he left office.

FannyCornforth Sun 30-May-21 07:37:23

There was / is a regular poster who is an expert on all things Catholic, I can't recall her name.

I'm not sure about the PM / Catholic bit now...
It would be good to hear from someone more knowledgeable than me! smile

Calendargirl Sun 30-May-21 07:56:27

I’ve just looked up the Catholic’s and PM Fanny

It said Tony Blair is the only PM to be a Catholic, and he converted after leaving office. Didn’t actually say the PM couldn’t be a Catholic, but I only skimmed it.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 30-May-21 07:58:45

I think a Catholic can be PM.

Not that faith seems to bother Johnson too much. He seems to have broken most of the 10 Commandments with impunity.
