I went to both IOW festivals

I don't know why this is under competitions. Meant to be under chat.

I was there! I was 17 and had to beg my parents to be allowed to go. My favourite performers were Hendrix, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

I've always LCs music but when you actually listen to the lyrics they're often quite depressing really. My all time favourite is Closing Time.

I wasn’t allowed, too young, to rub salt into the wound I had to go with my Mum and Auntie to Southsea for the day where all the ‘hippies’ were waiting about for ferries, not fair!

No I didn't. I wish I had. I went away to college the following month and IoW was all people talked about.
I did see Leonard Cohen in late 60s at the Albert Hall. Loved him.
And saw him again on his last UK tour. Loved him

DH was at both, but I missed out. And I never did get to see Leonard Cohen.

Saw a programme about him recently. Didn’t realise he started out as a poet.

I was too young, love his music and wish I could have seen him live.

DH had a ticket for the Isle of Wight festival (he still has it). He was in the Royal Navy and had to stay on the ship over that weekend. He was not happy!

I went to the 1969 festival. I was 20 and traveled down from Newcastle with 11 other friends in the back of a coal truck. We had tarpaulins underneath us and over us. It was quite comfy too. We had chicken legs. Cheese and French loaves to eat and a crate of Newcastle brown to drink. (I had taken a flask of tea, cos I didn't drink. Lol.) 3 of the group played guitars and so we sang all night. It was fantastic. My brother-in-law worked there as a steward so got to meet some of the bands but my mother met some of my friends and put the kibosh on it because they were hippies. I only got to go one of the days. It was at Wooton if I remember rightly and the pubs had run out of beer. Ha ha. It was a long time ago. I remember Donovan was there. X

I really wanted to go to the IOW Festival, but a tad too young, I did a lot of one day festivals around that time and saw some big names. Leonard Cohen didn't resonate with me until a few years after that time.

There's a place on the IOW called Dimbola Lodge which is or should I say was open to the public. When I went it had a great photographic exhibition of that 1970s concert. Although browsing the pictures I found my more mature self pondering the state of the toilet facilities, I can remember missing whole acts during the queueing for those when I went to open air concerts at the Oval and Crystal Palace. Sigh! heady days, that IOW concert was the concert to end all concerts I imagine, unless of course you happened to go to Woodstock!

Leonard Cohen.... such a clever and good looking man.

I am so jealous of you folk who saw Leonard Cohen at IOW. I too have a dvd of him at the festival. Brilliant!
I didn't know him at that time. My second husband introduced me to his music in 1997. Since then I saw him in Belfast Sligo and Dublin. Best concerts I have been to. Sorry you never got to see him Maggiemaybe.
Closing Time..great song ...I still get emotional when I watch it on youtube as he does that little dance off stage.
For me there will never be anyone to equal Leonard Cohen.
Its difficult to choose a favourite. .Closing Time, Anthem, Alexandra Leaving.....

Just listening to First we take Manhattan right now. We've been fixing an old music system of 1 AC whic has gathered dust and was on the verge of being thrown out. But DH has got it going and its great music quality compared to other stuff round the house. Now we've found an old Rod Stewart, freebie once I think.

Nadateturbe I discovered him late too. Luckily saw him live in concert before he died. Now pretty well obsessed with his music and poetry. Thank Goodness for Spotify

I'm glad you got to see him May7. I went through an obsessed phase of listening to his music and interviews every free minute.
I have two books - Book of Longing and Let us Compare Mythologies. I must revisit. I haven't read for a long time.
