Well this morning at 4 am I heard the familiar squeak squeak of a baby seagull I thought oh dear a baby s on the flat roof again, I hope the mum knows and I went back to sleep when I got up at 7 I could still hear a muffled squeak and opened the chimney trap door and could see a very very young seagull on the little ledge above… so arm in and popped her out into the bedroom Shes much smaller than Stephen and I was really worried she wouldn’t be old enough to feed herself I put her in the garden with some sardines and water and mum was circling around above screening at me I was hoping she’d come down and get her or at least feed her
When I came back from work just now she was making a big old racket and all the sardines had gone so I thought either mums been down or she is able to feed herself
I put some more water and sardines out and waited… she was making a lot of noise, suddenly it went quiet I had a peep and she was eating away at the sardines
With a bit of luck she ll stay with me and the sardines until she can fly away in about 8 weeks time
Anyway meet Sybil
Could it be Stephens offspring ?

Dish is empty * Nansnanny* I did my usually clucking noise and she (he) was there
If one comes down next year I m going to put a bit of couloured spray on its back then I ll know for sure

Callistemon Tue 20-Jul-21 14:20:55

I've had my magnifying glass out and yes, it's definitely Sybil.

She obviously prefers your food to the rubbish her biological mother brings her.

BlueBelle Tue 20-Jul-21 15:11:46

????I think so too ! she was on my doorstep when I came home

JaneJudge Tue 20-Jul-21 15:18:43

awwww smile smile smile you are the seagull Nanna

Aldom Tue 20-Jul-21 17:54:01

BlueBelle Funnily enough, I was thinking about Sybil this morning. It really does seem as though she has come back to see you again.
I'm really pleased to hear news of her. Thank you.

I am glad your seagull is flying free, where she belongs.

I was saddened last year when my friend yet again had a blackbird in her woodburner, luckily not alight. Normally a fire fitting engineer would recommend the chimney is caged to stop birds coming down/being trapped in the chimney.

BlueBelle Tue 20-Jul-21 18:18:52

Yes that’s the best thing to do shandy as I said before I can’t do that as I m in an old Victorian three storey house so would need scaffolding which would be too expensive for me
Hopefully Sybil or sibling will soon fly for herself she has lost all her fluff and gained her tail feathers so shouldn’t be long before take off
Sometimes the mums push them out the nest when they get big that may have been what happened

lemongrove Tue 20-Jul-21 18:27:58

Presumably the young seagull fledged.

sodapop Tue 20-Jul-21 20:45:12

Good luck Sybil fly free in the sunshine.

BlueBelle Tue 20-Jul-21 22:11:33

She’s eating and drinking well but calling a lot I can see mum up on the tall chimney I wonder what they think
she’s got plenty of greenery to hide in if needed

Callistemon Tue 20-Jul-21 22:12:13

And it's warm at the moment.

SueDonim Tue 20-Jul-21 22:23:51

That’s what people here have been complaining of - the racket seagulls are making! It’s partly that the babies are now more like teenagers and are perpetually shrieking at mum ‘I’m hungry! I’m HUNGRY!’ grin

One poor woman has got a baby seagull that fell into her garden. Every time she tries to go out, Mama bird gets very angry at her! ?

gmarie Wed 21-Jul-21 06:41:33

Bless you! flowers

BlueBelle Wed 21-Jul-21 06:47:43

Shows what a good mum that gull is suedonim
I think my mummy gull is just fed up she looks down now and then but I can hear her saying ‘Well do it your way you wanted to leave home early I told you you weren’t ready but you knew best’

People just love complaining if we hadn’t overfished and didn’t eat food in the street they d be making their noise flying behind the boats like they did in my childhood
It’s humans fault that gulls are noisy, cause dirt, and seem greedy they are trying to survive in an alien world

seacliff Wed 21-Jul-21 07:16:12

I love this ongoing story.

I was in Aldeburgh yesterday, and people were all shooing the gulls away. They are beautiful birds, and just trying to survive. They were here first. Good on you Bluebelle.

SueDonim Wed 21-Jul-21 14:54:12

I can imagine your mummy gull is rolling her eyes and saying ‘What can you do with them?’ to herself! grin

That’s very true, if we weren’t so filthy, the gulls wouldn’t bother coming into towns.

Because Sybil or sibling fell into my front garden this time she is much less safe and yesterday i heard her crying loudly in the back alley, but little I can do now, she has to sink or swim However this morning I put the food out as usual and savvy Sybil found her way back for breakfast Here she is walking away from the restaurant and didn’t even leave a tip
I think she will find her way and within a week or so find her wings She can already flutter sort of running with wings flapping
Her mum is still looking down
The second picture is just before I believe she fell for the second time

BlueBelle Thu 22-Jul-21 07:34:42

Sorry forgot the photos

Riverwalk Thu 22-Jul-21 08:01:24

Savvy Sybil smile

I love the way she's walking away obviously replete! sunshine

Caleo Thu 22-Jul-21 08:24:55

Best wishes to Baby Sybil

SueDonim Thu 22-Jul-21 11:58:08

She’s the most spoilt seagull in the world! grin

BlueBelle Thu 22-Jul-21 14:03:12

She’s savvy indeed she was waiting on my doorstep when I got home from work at 2pm and has had a nice meal
Have to go to the coop tomorrow and replenish my supply that’s the nearest shop to me and funnily enough cheaper than Band M and the pound shops must be the only thing they are cheaper on ?

BlueBelle Fri 23-Jul-21 13:26:21

Just had dinner Mum and got a bowl of water to drink or cool myself in

Callistemon Fri 23-Jul-21 14:09:53

Thanks Bluebelle

She is certainly a very pampered seagull smile
She may not want to fly away when she's so well looked after by you!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 23-Jul-21 14:40:20

My Stephens all seem to have fledged and it hadn’t taken them long to realise that I’m a soft touch.

I always feed mum and dad first thing in the morning and that is it. They then disappear until the following morning, but I’ve been out gardening all day and all the Stephens and Sybils have been walking up and down on the shed roof begging.
