Jadeb52 Thu 01-Jul-21 20:19:56

Wear mini skirts, paint eyelashes underneath eyes, go to all nighters at local clubs and tell parents I was staying at my friends and she did the same! Do high impact aerobics classes after working all day!!

ElderlyPerson

ElderlyPerson the chow mein thingy that needed frying were called crispy noodles ( as opposed to the sloppy ones that were also included) and they puffed up in a frying pan in about 30 seconds ! My very new husband ( at the time ) and I ate these delicacies when we were doing up our first rented flat courtesy of East Kilbride Development Corporation ! Happy days - and no indigestion !

Thank you.

I seem to remember that East Kilbride Development Corporation ran a competition advertised throughout the UK with a prize offering huge incentives to a business that would move to the area and expand. Presumably this was to hope to get more jobs available and to create wealth that the people who worked in the factory would then spend their wages in the area to a large extent and thus lots of people would prosper.

Did you perchance move there with the company that won the competition?

No ElderlyPerson - our only claim to the ( very nice , brand new ) flat was , as a teacher in East Kilbride , I was considered a key worker and therefore entitled to rented accomodation . The flat was a godsend as enabled us to save for our first small house !

Thank you.

.. Leave my baby outside Tesco.
.. Drink CherryB, Ponys with a kick, Cinzano and Brandy n Babycham.
.. Wear American Tan tights.
.. Lie in sun with no ST lotion until I burned.
.. Wear shoes too small because they looked nicer.

ElderlyPerson Thu 01-Jul-21 20:36:16

open the door to the Tesco delivery driver, have a chat with him or her, then use the delivered food anytime after it had been delivered.

And that was as recently as early March 2020.

It seems to me that many years before that have all telescoped together in many ways, but every stage since March 2020 seems to be quite clear.

But it all seems like it was another world.

Lying on the bed in order to do up the zip on my very tight bell bottom jeans.
Wearing stilettos all day at work.
Going into pubs aged 16 and getting served alcohol - I'm only 5' tall, and must have looked about 12!
At 16 went to Benidorm for 10 days and took £25 spending money and came home with £5.00!
Walking home from town at 2.00am (3 miles away) after a night out.
Started work aged 16 as an office junior at our Town Hall, and on Thursdays we sent Agenda out to all the Councillors (60 in total + Parish Councillors + the Press) but they were always late getting to the post room and I used to stay behind, on my own franking the envelopes and then making 3 or 4 journeys with them to the Post Office (they were really heavy) and only finishing at 7.30pm! Juniors these days would just tell you to get stuffed!

Sewed pompoms round the bottom of my very wide bell bottom jeans and then been refused entry to the public loos as 'we don't want your sort in here'.

ariodante65 Thu 01-Jul-21 21:46:45

Have dinner parties. So much hard work! And like skysal, commute to work in heels. If only I had worn flat shoes and changed when I got there my hideous feet would now look and feel so much better.

Grannycool52 Thu 01-Jul-21 22:21:39

This is a brilliant thread ?.

STs belts, Dr Whites towels.(sorry to bring down the tone) how did we manage!
Buying Rimmel make up from Woolworths, buying lastest 45s from Woolworths.
Tank Tops and platform shoes and boots. Orange squash from Woolworths
from the machine with plastic oranges floating around in it.
Getting told off by dad for having my Tamla Motown music too loud.

JackyB Fri 02-Jul-21 08:27:58

Wear Crimplene.
Wear the same knickers for 2 consecutive days.

Franbern Fri 02-Jul-21 08:57:50

Sitting in bed late at night, with hubbie (revising for his exams), eating cheese and biscuits. No indegestion!!!!
Wearing those horrible belts to fasten onto stockings
Wearing thin Stilletto heels all day to go to and from, and, at work (am unable even to get my feet to bend into even low heeled shoes these days).
Belting my size 24 inch waist in wide belts (with full homemade skirts with wired petticoat undeneath)- but worried that I was fat!!!
Spending the whole day of Sunday just getting ready to go to dance in the evening.

Doing the Aldermaston March each year, sleeping on the floor in different places, with only a thin very bulky sleeping bag.
A little big older, being able, happily, cope with eight young children (under the age of 11), - six of my own (including twins), and two foster babies/toddlers.

That I used to..
Smother myself in QT(a fake tan) and be pleased with the bright orange results!
Wear roll on lip gloss
Spray on Sun In to lighten my hair
Use so much Charlie Girl
Believe the adverts
Look for all my information in books
Not make phone calls until after 6pm
Wear platforms
Stand up to change one of the 3 channels
Watch TV in black and white
Have to watch what was on TV in real time.
Wait for ages for Dream Topping to thicken-always worth the wait!
Wait at least a week for photos to be returned by post only to firmly put in a draw?.
Wait for the second part of my Donny Osmond poster-the first part was always the legs!
Ate sweets that could probably of glowed in dark.
Thought the Vesta range were the height of sophistication-loved every mouthful!
Thought Ayds and Limmits would work miracles, also PLJ.
That said I'm glad I grew up when I did. Maybe every generation feels their childhood/teenage years were happier and more innocent.

shysal Fri 02-Jul-21 09:37:51

Most women flushed used sanitary products down the toilet! I used the forerunner of a Mooncup, so not guilty!

Grandmajean Fri 02-Jul-21 10:38:50

Oh yes *Ariodante 65*- those blooming dinner parties ? All that clearing away after everyone had gone ! Never do dinner parties now.
Wore long skirts in the late 70s with an inch of broderie anglais peeping out from the hem. I am only four feet eleven so must have looked ridiculous !

leeds22 Fri 02-Jul-21 10:50:48

Wore micro minis, back combed my hair, wore white boots that needed to be constantly pulled up and probably wore blue eye shadow too.

Serendipity22 Fri 02-Jul-21 10:50:49

I used to walk down to the pub at night wearing literally next to nothing, skimpy, skimpy, flimsy, flimsy attire !!!!

recklessgran Fri 02-Jul-21 10:54:18

Wore black crinkly wet look boots with a shiny red wet look mac - I thought I was so cool but must have looked like a lady of the night.
Played Maggie May on repeat for hours on my Dansette record player, blaring, with the windows open. Parents at work - it must have driven the poor neighbours mad.
Practiced snogging using my David Cassidy and Bay City Rollers posters.
Went to bed with pink calamine lotion on my spots and another who sellotaped her hair. Crumbs I must have looked a sight.
Hid my now DH behind the doors of the vanity unit in the Nurses Home where I lived when the home sister was doing her rounds after lights out!
Smoked, INSIDE the house - in fact smoked at all.
Gosh, great thread and thanks for the memories.

Aepgirl Fri 02-Jul-21 10:57:22

Soaked my paper nylon petticoats I sugar water to make them stiffer.

Sunbathe with my legs soaked in olive oil and vinegar.

Camelotclub Fri 02-Jul-21 10:59:08

Smoke. I used to love a ciggie with a drink, or without one. I hate to think how many I got through. Gave up in year 2000.

Bazza Fri 02-Jul-21 10:59:37

Wearing a roll on to hold up my stockings when I weight eight stone. Commuting to work in stilettos, including shopping in my lunch hour. My feet surprisingly ok, actually the only part of my body I’m not horrified by!

icanhandthemback Fri 02-Jul-21 11:01:37

...to have my hair thinned! My hair was so bushy my Mum used to thin it regularly with one of those thinning combs. Now I am desperate to try to get some volume to my hair.

...be allowed to boil milk at the age of 6 to make my sister and I our breakfasts whilst my mother slept. I hated hot milk with the skin but my mother insisted that we didn't have cold milk. Nowadays this wouldn't be acceptable but I never burned myself. The only time I did was on one of those gas igniter guns and I was being supervised at the time!!

di1964 Fri 02-Jul-21 11:05:43

.. Fancy the drummer from the pop group Slade . Don Powell was his name.
Everyone else was into Donny Osmond or David Cassidy .. I was definitely different back then grin

nipsmum Fri 02-Jul-21 11:09:19

I worked 47 hours a week when I was 15, for the princely sum of £3.09p per week.
