I cannot believe I used to…………

Wear my school blazer in class, all day, every day, summer and winter alike, no matter how hot it was, as I was flat chested, and felt that no one (especially the boys) would realise that, whereas they would if I was just wearing my school blouse.

Often think now what a twit I must have looked.

Had a fringe for about 25 yrs!

Being old enough at school to wear stockings instead of white knee socks.
Stockings held up with a suspender belt mind you.
I too wore blue eyeshadow. I never needed mascara as I had long, very black lashes.
Had a Saturday job in Woolworths that paid 19/6. With my first pay packet in my pocket, I went to Littlewoods and bought a turquoise blue corduroy mini skirt and matching cardigan and still had change for the bus home.

Ah, Vesta chow mein, my favourite. I loved the crispy noodles.

Ironed my curly hair between brown paper too, which then stayed straight for about 30 minutes . Black eye makeup and white lipstick all worn with black polo necks and jeans shrunk in the bath ! I also remember being able to eat a loaf of white sliced bread and lemon curd for tea as a student nurse, and remaining a size 10 with a tight belt and buckle round my tiny waist !! What happened ?

ElderlyPerson the chow mein thingy that needed frying were called crispy noodles ( as opposed to the sloppy ones that were also included) and they puffed up in a frying pan in about 30 seconds ! My very new husband ( at the time ) and I ate these delicacies when we were doing up our first rented flat courtesy of East Kilbride Development Corporation ! Happy days - and no indigestion !

I seem to remember that East Kilbride Development Corporation ran a competition advertised throughout the UK with a prize offering huge incentives to a business that would move to the area and expand. Presumably this was to hope to get more jobs available and to create wealth that the people who worked in the factory would then spend their wages in the area to a large extent and thus lots of people would prosper.

Did you perchance move there with the company that won the competition?

No ElderlyPerson - our only claim to the ( very nice , brand new ) flat was , as a teacher in East Kilbride , I was considered a key worker and therefore entitled to rented accomodation . The flat was a godsend as enabled us to save for our first small house !

... operate canal locks wearing flip-flops, and jump between bottom gates rather than walk right round to the other side to open or close the one on that side ( only on narrow locks though!)

ninathenana, a Vesta paella was my very occasional treat for myself when I was a stony-broke student.

If I ever saw them on sale now, I’d treat myself again.
I bet they wouldn’t taste the same though - they might have been made ‘healthy’ with sundry tasty ‘rubbish’ ingredients taken out. ?

I lead such a sheltered life. The only thing I did was hitch back from a play with boyfriend - my mother was really cross

Drank Campari. Chased pop stars down the streets before going to their concerts, including Paul McCartney and Ray Davies. Cried and screamed at said concerts!

Wear a mini skirt , white stretchy knee boots, tight top and white three quarter pvc coat. Used to scrub the coat with soak and water and use a bail brush ! Kept it very white! Such happy days.

Queue all night at 14 years for tickets to see the Beatles, PJ Proby and The Rolling Stones. Would have a blue fit if my GD wanted to do that now.

Walk around in an umbrella. Well, not quite but I had a petticoat with a wire inserted in the bottom seam to make the skirt stand out. We must have looked ridiculous but it was very popular.

When I was 9 years old my parents put me on a train to go and visit my grandparents. The journey was about 4 hours and I had to change train once. ”Make sure you get on the right train, ask if you are unsure. Grandma and Grandpa will meet you at the end of the journey.”
I loved it and felt so grown up.

Wore suspender belts and stockings. Very uncomfortable.

You can still buy Vesta curry in B & M!

Soaked net petticoats in sugar solution to make them so stiff that they scratched your legs.
Used olive oil as sun tan lotion.
Yes I used to sleep in rollers (agony) and also tried great wodges of cotton wool tucked under my hair .
Loved Vesta curry , dry Martini , Cinzano and when working in a long vac in Cornwall Merrydown .

I think you can get the vesta meals still in B and M. Used to like the beef curry one.

Used to wear tights with different coloured knickers attached.
Wear navy or choc brown tights with long white socks over them.
Put nail varnish to stop ladder running in said tights

Used to sit in a bath of potassium permanganate to try and dye my lily white legs brown. Wear white lipstick, and yes LOVE Vesta chow mein too.

Cinzano/ Martini either my drink of choice until I got drunk on my 21st birthday after "friends" decided it would be fun to buy me doubles! Never again!

Wear lip gloss that was so sticky that you used to have to prize your lips apart just to speak
Use mousse on my hair to try and get it to hold any type of curl
Sleep in rollers(see above, neither worked)
Wear shiny highlighter that looked like white stripes across my cheekbones
Wear tights of any description
Wear shoes/sandals with anything above a 2 inch heel (ankles won't cope!)

Sleeping with rollers in my hair, I had pulled them all out by morning usually
I loved Vesta Chow Mein as well.
Drinking rum and blackcurrant- disgusting hangovers the next day
Wearing a girdle for no good reason as I was slim then.

Go to parties and sleep under grand pianos. Smoke Gauloise, Hitch everywhere, lie to my mother ?
