Depending on the type of work and the wages.?.

Sorry, I don't understand your question?

Have my bath as a kid once a week in a tin bath that hung outside in the back yard.
Drank so much socially through the 80s and early 90s, suffering terrible hangovers. I’m practically teetotal now.

Smoke and eat animal products.?

One day I borrowed my mum's figure enhancing Silhouette Little X girdle to hold up my stockings at school. A string quartet came to give a recital in the gym (yawn!). Luckily I escaped when the girdle cut off my circulation to the point that I was carted off to sick bay in a faint.

Have an 18inch waist and thought I was fat!

Sleep in a head full of spiky plastic rollers.

Love the crispy noodles in Vesta Chow Mein.

Wear high heels when on my feet all day.

Wear a woollen swimsuit knitted by my mother

use cash to pay for things.

Grandmajean Thu 01-Jul-21 14:58:25

ElderlyPerson the chow mein thingy that needed frying were called crispy noodles ( as opposed to the sloppy ones that were also included) and they puffed up in a frying pan in about 30 seconds ! My very new husband ( at the time ) and I ate these delicacies when we were doing up our first rented flat courtesy of East Kilbride Development Corporation ! Happy days - and no indigestion !

Drink sterilised milk and enjoy it. Eat sugar sandwiches.

I did the sellotape on my fringe and ironing my hair on the ironing board. Wore American Tan tights and petticoats, my GD 16 was watching a cartoon film with me yesterday and one of the girls was showing her petticoats and she said “what’s she wearing under that dress?” I told her a petticoat and she said “what’s it for?” ?

Wonderful thread…..it makes me think though that for all the fun and laughter along the way we should all just lighten up now and go with the flow. Because we are the lucky ones to still be here it’s a privilege.

Sit in warm water in the bath in new Levi jeans, to get them to fit well.

Walk everywhere.

Juggle a full time responsible job with children and home, and still have more energy than I do now.

Jaxjacky Thu 01-Jul-21 14:32:54

Swim in the sea with new jeans on to shrink and bleach them.
Search my car for loose change to buy a packet of soup.
Clean my contact lenses and wash my hair with washing up liquid.
Hop on and off planes like buses all over the world for work with two young children at home.
Have 5 male friends around at 5 in the morning for a full English and fizz for the first and last Grand Prix of the year.

Drove my Fiesta from Chartres to Amiens, Calais, Folkestone, Greater Manchester. Just a short kip in a service area. Inside 24 hours and all by myself, in my mid-50s.

We lived in a not very nice area of Birmingham. I was convinced George Harrison would move in next door and we would get married grin

I learned to play backgammon because I read that Omar Sharif loved it. Although he was 22 years older than me I thought that if we'd met he would have been captivated but I don't think the middle of Lancashire was ever on his list of places to visit! His loss obviously grin

This thread has evoked so many memories :-) Thank you OP

My "I can't believe I used to" wear a pair of bright yellow over the keen platform boots.

I loved them and unlike my very bright pink, very uncomfortable, platform shoes the boots were at least comfortable.

I do not wear anything uncomfortable now.

Live in a tiny one room bedsit with a leaky gas fire and saggy old furniture and share the unheated bathroom with seven strangers in the other bedsits because I was too pigheaded to stay at home.
And - I stuffed newspaper around the window to keep out the draught. It's a miracle I didn't gas myself.

For me it was Paul McCartney... had a poster of him and thought he could see me. I ask you ...!!!?

OP here Just enjoying a lunch break and reading all your replies, thank you!
More confessions ; I cannot believe I used to enjoy Cinzano and believe that David Cassidy would find me and of course fall in love with me despite the fact Donny Osmond had begged for my hand in marriage….. it was never meant to be because as a Mormon I would not have been able to enjoy Cinzano?.

Yes I loved all those Vesta meals in the early 70s! The paella was indeed all in one and had to be fried. They did seem exotic in those days! I doubt people would buy them now!

Dance until 2 a.m. then walk home barefoot.
Eat Vesta curries.
Cycle on a daily basis

Ah, Vesta curries, and paella and chow mein.

If I remember correctly there was a vegetable curry and upon opening the box there were two bags. One was clear plastic and totally sealed and contained the curry as a slurry, and the other was an opaqueish plastic with lots of tiny holes in it that contained rice.

Then one boiled a saucepan of water, put some salt in it (I know, but that was then!) and inserted both bags and boiled it all for a while, producing a pan of water with a white foam on it, probably due to tiny bits off the rice getting through the holes in the bag.

Then drain away the water and open the bags (scissors?) and serve and enjoy.

The paella was, I think, all in one, but I am not sure.

I tried the Chow Mein once but I think that one had to fry the whatever they were called part and it went wrong. I have never been a fan of using a frying pan, it always seemed very dangerous, haven't used one since I think.

It all seemed very exotic back in the early 1970s, which I suppose that it was at the time.

I rather think that the vegetable curry served with the rice and some boiled potatoes made a very filling meal.

After my son left home post-uni, moved to another firm, did a two hour each way commute plus however long it took in the office, worked through lunch eating at my desk, worked on the train, until I retired 8 years ago. Retirement, not having to meet deadlines, not being preoccupied with ‘work stuff’ all the time, being as lazy as I want, not setting my alarm, actually enjoying life, is absolute bliss. No way could I do all that today.
