Diana’s statue

I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this odd lump of horrible coloured metal. The clothes don’t seem to suit her as I remember her but perhaps it’s just my aged recollection. Still as long as her sons are happy with it, that’s all that really matters. Is the statue going to be on public display?

Agree wildswan16

When I placed a memorial stone on a loved one’s grave, only people closely involved passed any comment within my hearing.

On here, it’s a free-for-all for anonymous people to express their views about a statue of someone they mostly only knew about via the media. The RF, unless they choose to, will never know either the complimentary or dismissive comments. Would anyone on GN actually express horrible comments on TV?

Actually, it's NOT her two boys but three anonymous children.

I think it is an insult. No resemblence to her whatever. More like an eastern European weightlifter in drag (and bad drag, at that!)

This thread is reminding me of the mob demanding "the boys" be brought back to London from Balmoral because they wanted to see them, no thought of two bereaved children being better off with granny and granddad away from all the hysteria.

Now we have people disagreeing with how those two princes want their mother represented in this statue because their idea of her is so much more important than her sons who commissioned it. Particularly amusing when the "art critics" can't work out that 3 children one of them black and one female, aren't actually meant to be William and Harry.

I've just found out that the marvellous stone mason I engaged for my husband's headstone, Fergus Wessel of 'stoneletters', carved the inscription on the front. What an honour.

Well said theworriedwell. The statue means something to the sons who actually knew their mother and that is what matters.

The statue is a piece of art displayed in public and hence open to artistic criticism. I would love to know what William and Harry really think about it - not convinced at all that either of them love it. Bronze is too cold for Diana - again I say marble would have been much better. Such a shame they chose a middle aged "pale and stale" male artist to create the piece - there are so many better sculptors out there.

It isn't just a piece of art, it is a memorial to their mother. I don't know about the statue being cold but people putting the boot in about a memorial to someone's mother is cold in my book.

I'm not a royalist, not a particular fan of Diana, William or Harry but I do realise they are human with human feelings.

Glad I'm not on my own Parsley.

Thw main thing is that they like it, and I very much hope they do.
That doesn't mean everyone has to agree with them.

not a good enough likeness for me very hard features remember her as soft person but if boys are happy no more to say Interesting to see photo it was taken from thankyou for sharing Grannygravy

Anniebach Wed 07-Jul-21 15:07:28

Why are they still called boys , they are heading for 40

Lucca Wed 07-Jul-21 15:52:36

As are my sons but they are still my boys

Anniebach Wed 07-Jul-21 15:56:00

Yes Lucca but do you call all men approaching 40 - boys ?

Lucca Wed 07-Jul-21 16:21:32

I might in reference to their mothers? But what does it matter

JaneJudge Wed 07-Jul-21 16:26:37

I take real issue with this as my daughter's care provider insists on calling her a lady and they correct me if I call her a girl, well SHE IS MY GIRL, I can call her my girl - because she is my girl. I call my sons, boys too. Maybe it's regional

Irrational rant blush

JaneJudge Wed 07-Jul-21 16:27:14

I don't mean I take issue with you Anniebach, I meant her care provider blush confused

Ilovecheese Wed 07-Jul-21 16:28:35

I refer to my friend's sons in their forties as "your boys "

theworriedwell Wed 07-Jul-21 16:32:03

Do you know their names Ilovecheese?

theworriedwell Wed 07-Jul-21 16:35:38

I think it is different to call our own children boys, I will occasionally say my youngest is my baby e.g. when he had covid and I was worried about him but I'd think it was odd if someone else said, "How's your baby." I mean he's 6'4" so a bit big for people to call him a boy or a baby. He's mixed race so calling him boy has other offensive connotations.

eazybee Wed 07-Jul-21 17:30:26

I refer to son and daughter.
I don't think of Diana and Charles' sons as their boys; never have.

Lucca Wed 07-Jul-21 18:00:41

Sorry but I have to ask again…..does it matter ???

MissAdventure Wed 07-Jul-21 18:05:22

Nope.
Not one jot.

theworriedwell Thu 08-Jul-21 15:01:33

Do alot of the things we discuss really matter? Does it matter if someone thinks the statue is good and someone else thinks its bad, does it matter if someone likes Harry and thinks William is awful or the other way round.

Does it matter if two grown men are referred to as boys? Probably not. Is it accurate? Definitely not.

I'd have liked it to depict one of her iconic moments such as when she shook hands with the aids patient, or walked in minefields with her visor on, or stood on the hospital steps cuddling her babies (it could be ambiguous as to which one).
... and I think the material should have been something smoother - marble maybe as someone suggested, with an arbour to protect it from weather (and pigeons!).
"Could be better!"

Lovetopaint037 Fri 09-Jul-21 08:49:23

Yes.Not what I was expecting. My first reaction on seeing it on the tv was to say “it doesn’t look much like her”. Might look better when we actually see it.
