Diana’s statue

I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this odd lump of horrible coloured metal. The clothes don’t seem to suit her as I remember her but perhaps it’s just my aged recollection. Still as long as her sons are happy with it, that’s all that really matters. Is the statue going to be on public display?

Its awful - end of. She looks dull and lifeless, not to mention too manly and older than she really was. Marble would have been far better to represent her than outdated bronze. They should also have chosen a female sculptor who would likely have made a more sympathic sculpture of another woman. And why on earth the three random children? She is not Mother Theresa! The outfit looks dreadful - I know it was based on something she actually wore but it looks awful in bronze. Diana was known for being fashion forward - I find it hard to believe her sons approved this sculpture, Harry in particular.

Not spaghetti... Really? I thought it was concrete or something similar. ?

Yorki Sat 03-Jul-21 00:28:54

It hasn't captured her personality at all. Her facial features look dead.. And the children look like 18th century vagabonds, with no shoes and shorts fashioned like that. Do you think the sculpture will be made aware of such comments? or will they be falsely applauded on doing a crap job?. I think he or she need to be made aware and make some changes if at all possible. Which I doubt it now. What a shame, is all I can say.

Yorki, it IS bronze.

The children on the statue look like small teenagers, it doesn't say anything to me about her caring side. I'd have thought it would have been a statue of her carrying a child in her arms, it doesn't do Diana justice, sorry.

It's not very clear, I was expecting something in bronze.. It looks cheap. I wish it had clearer features.

I expected a white statue. Maybe it looks better in real life. It's great to see that she can still generate such interest in these 10 pages of comments. I always liked Diana.

We’re all saying “Well, as long as William and Harry like it”

Do they? We’ll never know, but how many of us have sat in front of the hairdresser’s mirror, beamed, said “Yes, it’s lovely” and then tried to brush it out as soon as we’ve got home?

They could hardly say “That’s not what we wanted” when it was finished.

The children look even more peculiar than she does. It is just not very good. What a pity. She should have had a better memorial.

I think we were mostly expressing feelings for the artistic values of the statue lesley not on the person herself
I wasn’t a Diane fan but I still think she deserved something better than this
I agree Bluebelle.

I think this was meant to express her compassion for the world's children but it has totally failed to show her kindness, compassion and love for children.

If it’s meant to depict her time as a nursery worker she would look much younger and be looking with care at the children not staring into space with a hard masculine looking, set mouth
I don’t know what it’s meant to depict at all Its not her as a mother it’s not to my idea her as a nursery worker as they are much older children, they look top of primary age I d love to hear what the sculptures thoughts were as he made it

Presumable Harry and William saw prototypes along the way

kjmpde Fri 02-Jul-21 19:22:00

if i was asked to guess who it was, Diana would not come to mind. Didn't somebody say it looked like Claire Balding?

kjmpde Fri 02-Jul-21 19:20:41

there are 3 kids - 2 in front and one behind

I’ve heard enough about Diana to last a lifetime, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about it her sons like it.
I don’t understand why everyone is making her into a saint, she was manipulating and used the press and public to her own ends, and then complained when she didn’t have privacy when she wanted it, much like Meghan Markle
If you take the privileges off the tax payer then don’t complain when you don’t get the privacy you want, you have the choice and know what you are getting into.
Although saying that nobody deserves to pay with their life.

Sadly it doesn’t capture her beauty. It’s supposed to show her work as a humanitarian I think. It looks better from the side than from the front. Doesn’t do her or her work justice

starlily106 Fri 02-Jul-21 19:03:53

I don't like it at all. It doesn't look like Diana. She was a much prettier woman than this.i don't think it looks like her at all, not well proportioned and the clothes look odd. I think William and Harry must be so disappointed. If I had seen this without knowing who it was, I would not have been able to say who it was supposed to be.

NotSpaghetti Fri 02-Jul-21 18:52:44

Also, why does it have to have the awful lines of "poetry" on it?
It's just doggerel.

NotSpaghetti Fri 02-Jul-21 18:49:35

Thank you DillytheGardener for the link.
Very interesting.

eazybee Fri 02-Jul-21 18:35:59

Apparently the clothes are based on those she was wearing in her 1993 Christmas card, released after she separated from the Prince of Wales. Not the most tactful of choices.

Yammy Fri 02-Jul-21 18:30:41

Not impressed as others have said she looks masculine and sad. It makes her look lumpy, not thin and chic like she was.
Do her boys like it? Who will ever know but it won't catch peoples attention like the ethereal Peter pan statue and she seemed to be that sort of person with a smile and a word of kindness for everyone.

BlueSapphire Fri 02-Jul-21 18:26:51

Not at all keen on it. Hasn't captured her beauty or personality.

GrannyLaine Fri 02-Jul-21 18:05:35

Because Diana, Princess of Wales was such an exceptional person, I think it a great shame that an opportunity for something very beautiful has been missed. We can't know what the brief was from her sons and maybe there is something represented in the commission that is known only to them. The setting and placement for the statue is truly stunning but the statue itself looks dull and heavy. She was certainly neither of those things!

semperfidelis Fri 02-Jul-21 17:16:48

There are three children, not two! The third one is slightly behind the other two. It might be easier to judge if it's seen where it is actually placed in the sunken garden.

GrannyO Fri 02-Jul-21 17:16:20

The clothes were not attractive. She looked so beautiful in a floaty dress…

NainDylan Fri 02-Jul-21 17:16:14

The two children depicted are not her sons, just random children I suppose, referencing when she was a nursery teacher. It would have been much nicer to include her sons when little.
