Diana’s statue

I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this odd lump of horrible coloured metal. The clothes don’t seem to suit her as I remember her but perhaps it’s just my aged recollection. Still as long as her sons are happy with it, that’s all that really matters. Is the statue going to be on public display?

Here is a full view. I was very disappointed in this statue and why have two of the children with no shoes on and the one behind can only be seen at this angle. Diana would have looked much better dressed regally, as a Princess.

I thought it made her look manly and bulky .. no recognizable expression, much too much detail of the frilly blouse and big buckle. The place where it is is beautiful and I' m sure it will bring happiness to visitors, sons, grandchildren etc. Have heard hardly any positive reviews.

It's not her boys in the statue. It is a boy and a girl.

I was really underwhelmed and disappointed. The statue didn’t capture her personality and the clothing was awful.

I think it looks horrible

GeorgyGirl that is a better angle for the picture you have put up as I have been on the net trying to find one. Perhaps as I said earlier you would have to view it in the gardens.

I still think that it has not captured Diana at all. She was a beautiful woman and there is no beauty to this statute. Her face is expressionless and the silly blouse is unbuttoned to her cleavage and with that oversized unattractive belt the look is ruined. Two of the children have no shoes on they are like stray waifs, this is a disappointing memorial and I wonder how pleased the two princes really are. (Sorry is Harry still called a prince) When I see the two of them together I think as both of them as princes.

There are actually 3 children as one is tucked in on the right hand side. Of course it's going to look "hatd" because of what its hued from.

teachkate Fri 02-Jul-21 14:28:08

The statue is hideous and I honestly think Princess Diane would have supported the money being spent elsewhere on causes she championed

NotSpaghetti Fri 02-Jul-21 14:29:44

Shazmo it's actually a lost-wax casting so has the potential to be supremely soft and detailed.
Not hewn at all.

Rumbabba Fri 02-Jul-21 14:36:53

The statue could be anyone in my eyes, it looks nothing like her whatsoever. Very disappointed! ?

SheilsM Fri 02-Jul-21 14:53:32

gringrin

Parsley3 Fri 02-Jul-21 14:59:24

I think the idea was to present her as a mother not a princess.

GeorgyGirl Fri 02-Jul-21 15:01:56

I agree with you 3Nanny6, there is a lot wrong with it, they have not done her justice at all. I wonder what William and Harry are really thinking of it in their heart of hearts now it is done.

MissAdventure Fri 02-Jul-21 15:06:55

The pictures of her as a mother rather than a princess are the most radiant ones.

Nanny12 Fri 02-Jul-21 15:14:11

I think it very disappointing why use random kids when her joy was with her sons . Still I hope her sons like it

mrswoo Fri 02-Jul-21 15:14:30

You've got to feel a bit sorry for the sculpter- it was never going to be an easy commission. Having said that; I think the statue is pretty awful.
Everything is wrong with it: it lacks "warmth" and makes Diana look like a lumpy Amazon herding a bunch of bored kids off to school before she rushes off to spend a day in the office.

Purplephoenix Fri 02-Jul-21 15:19:32

I find it ugly. Her face is coarse and the proportions are all wrong. That belt seems very strange.

CV2020 Fri 02-Jul-21 15:45:31

I don’t really like it.
Who are the random children? Two boys one girl!
It’s not really a likeness of Diana in my opinion.
As long as William and Harry like it!

CV2020 Fri 02-Jul-21 15:48:21

Two of the children have no shoes on too!

Sawsage2 Fri 02-Jul-21 15:51:50

Awful!
Should have used a better sculpter.

I could not remember her dressing like that either, but looking at old photos shown on online newspapers she did seem to have a few with the pencil skirt and a large belt, as shown above, perhaps if she had been shown looking down in her classic pose, but to be honest has anyone ever seen a statue of someone famous in their lifetime that they like? I know I haven't , Freddy Mercury is another and even the one ofMaggie Thatcher wasn't that good. Eric Morecambe is possibly the best that I can remember, but it's more about the pose than the likeness.

CarrieAnn Fri 02-Jul-21 16:39:03

Apparently it isn't meant to be an exact likeness of Diana, the skirt on the statue is a copy of one she has been photographed wearing with the extra wide belt.Having read a critique of it this morning, it's meant to be timeless, could be in any era.The children are ra dom,as they didn't want William and Harry to be forever seen as children. The masculinity is supposed to portray her strength

Callistemon Fri 02-Jul-21 16:45:45

The masculinity is supposed to portray her strength

If they are trying to claim that, that is truly shocking.
Women have strength - it may not always be muscular strength but they can be stronger than men in many ways. It wasnt necessary to make her look masculine to portray that.

timeless - yes, she looks far older than a woman in her 30s.

CarlyD7 Fri 02-Jul-21 17:01:04

I'm trying to be kind and wondering if the idea was to portray her at 60 - because that's certainly not the way she looked in her 30's? Far too stocky / busty / masculine. Maybe it looks better viewed in person - hope so. I wonder how difficult it was for the two brothers to agree on the design, considering they agree on so little these days?

Plunger Fri 02-Jul-21 17:08:46

Horrid! Diana is a weird shape, her clothes don't fit and the children look about 10 years old but the size of five year old. Must be honest though as never one of her fans.
