The title should go when Charlie becomes king, I'm not a royalist, nothing against the current ones, except AirmilesAndy and MEEgain & Hapless, but it is time to wind it all down. Too much privilege to a few, especially if you read the history of how it all began

I'm a Scot, I'll put my neck on the line. I'm about 30 miles from Edinburgh too, so I nearly qualify.

I have no interest at all in who the Duke of Edinburgh is, or even if we have one. As far as I recall, the only times Phillip came to Edinburgh were when he and the Queen were on official business in Scotland, throwing a nice garden party or bopping people on the shoulder with swords.

There was a rumour that Prince Edward might come and live in Scotland to show how much the RF valued us. Lead balloon.

I wonder how the people of Edinburgh feel about it, they probably don't care one little bit.

Personally I could not care less.

Charles is already Duke of Edinburgh, he became so automatically when Prince Phillip died. The Queen doesn't get to hold on to it, because she is female.

Here you will see that the title was revived for Prince Phillip, not created for him.

It had been used before on various occasions. The first Duke of Edinburgh was one of George III's sons.

Like many I have conflicting feelings about the Royals. However, I know from personal experience how involved Edward has been for many years in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, taking a real interest in it and the young people involved, having taken this over from his father years ago. Given that it would be fitting if he did become Duke of Edinburgh, giving up his other Scottish title when that happened. As I understand it the DofE title won't go away but will go to Charles when the Queen dies unless he chooses to pass it on.

I'm with you Lucca! After all these titles were created by dictating to a peoples that they were no longer masters of their own destiny. In short , that they were now "owned"by English royalty .bit old hat nowadays. Glad they're having a think about this meaningless heirarchical nonsense.

I thought the oP’s question was what was it all about meaning why has Charles changed his mind now he has DofE why doesn’t he want his younger brother to have it when the Queen and Philip wanted him too? Why? Is there a family feud? We hear Sophie is much favoured by the Queen and obviously Camilla isn’t.. is there some harbouring resentment there? After all Sophie us only a countess much lower than a duchess.. which would presumably change if Edward became DofE? We can only guess at the reasons behind this public drama that we pay for. Which doesn’t mean it’s not interesting ?

Don't agree with all the titled Royalty, bowing, curtseys, paying for them all with police protection etc. At the end of the day they are just normal people the same as us with no 'magical powers so why do we need to worship them? All these titles should be abolished. It's 2021 not the middle ages.

We have been led to beileve it was the wishes of Phillip to pass it to Edward; so it seems sad that his wishes are being ignored. However as the Queens Consort for so long I expect he was used to not getting what he wanted in matters like this.

And pf course Edward may be perfectly happy with this.

I think its nice to honour family members with titles. We as general public keep up family traditions and hand things down with pride so why can't they.

It’s all hearsay at the moment. I doubt Prince Charles would go against the Queen or his late father. Maybe Prince Edward doesn’t want the title. Let’s wait and see.

The RF will do what’s right and I’m happy with that.

I am happy with the list Anniebach has given, I think they will all do a good job for the country.
My vote would never be for a Head of State/ President.
