Hi all
Just starting this
Let’s see how we go
Come on England!!

JenniferEccles Mon 12-Jul-21 09:06:35

So disappointing for the young team but they have so much to be proud of.
To have reached the finals is a fantastic achievement and they should take comfort from the knowledge that they achieved so much more than any other England team has done for years.

The pressure on them, the hype, the expectations of an entire nation (even the Queen and William sent a message of encouragement!) is a hell of a lot for anyone to cope with, let alone such a young team.

The result could hardly have been closer could it? 1-1 for the match duration plus the extra time, and Italy only beat us by one penalty.

Riverwalk it’s not just the players but the manager. The manager decided we should play defensively in the second half, it’s the manager who decides when and which subs to bring on and it’s the manager who ultimately decides who takes the penalty. Saka is just 19 and according to my Arsenal friends has never taken a penalty for them. Rashford and Sanchez were brought on cold. Grealish was brought on too late.

If we had done those things differently maybe we might have won but let’s not forget the Italians were the best side we played against and hadn’t lost for 33 games. We so nearly did it. In parts we were magnificent.

Spot on!

Grandma70. Sorry but don’t be silly.

I feel much the same way as does Grandma70.

Why on earth people couldn't have ignored her post is a mystery to me.

Why do you, and others, feel the need to make an issue of it?

She doesn't care for football; it's allowed. Neither do I.

The appalling behaviour of some fans both before and after the game was infantile and shames us all.

Yes of course you are right I should have ignored it but it just struck a chord with the grudging tone.

lemsip Mon 12-Jul-21 08:59:43

The penalty takers didn't volunteer, they were picked by Southgate!

he should not have put such a responsibility on 19yr old Saka against such an older goalie. saka will carry that for years like southgate did . Only in my opinion of course.

What a decent man Gareth Southgate seems to be. He makes me quite proud.

England should be proud of the way they have played in the Euros. The youngsters in the team have gained valuable experience from this tournament. Italy haven't lost a game in 3 years so they were always going to be formidable opponents and despite being the poorer side in the first half, came out after half-time a different side. Penalties were to prove the deciding factor. I really felt for young Saka. 19 years old and being handed the crucial 5th penalty. Sterling or Grealish should have taken that. That's footy for you. I love it. Grandma70s and I can't wait for the season to start now. grin

Riverwalk Mon 12-Jul-21 08:46:15

It's mean for anyone to blame the penalty takers - at least they volunteered.

If the players who had been on the pitch for the duration had played a bit better or scored another goal there would have been no penalties!

Does anyone ever blame the goalie for not saving each one?

Tickingbird that a truly disgusting comment and says a lot about you
Grandma70 why would you comment on something you dislike and aren’t interested in why would you even come on this thread
In hindsight (a precious thing) Gareth Southgate should have had at least one more experienced player taking a penalty and also brought the boys on earlier they were hardly warmed up
I only hope it doesn’t eat away at them they will NEVER get over that missed chance even if they go on to do wonderful things They will be waking up this morning to horrible horrible churning thoughts whizzing round and round, all the what if s I know Southgate will be supportive kind and caring but no one can envisage what it will have done to their confidence and well being
No ones mentioned that Italy played a very dirty game with lots of hacking and pull downs
I think they did us proud to get to the very end with hope in our hearts ???

Beautifully said ???

Yes whitewave after seeing all the litter and debris left in the wake of the match it was definitely time to go home! But well done England take all the positives of this tournament forward.

I didn’t watch it. I am not interested in football, I don’t know any of the players and I don’t care in the least who won. It’s always the same - one side’s happy, one isn’t. What are they, children?

So why are you commenting? Why are you even reading this thread? Were not interested in you

I am commenting on the general culture surrounding football, which is pervasive. It needs to be pointed out that many of us don’t feel the need to take sides and find it infantile.

Sport is competitive. People take sides. Your post was so “ miserable “ and very egocentric…you said “I” four times.

That could be because it was my take on the situation, which is as valid as yours. Is only one opinion (yours) allowed?

Oh dear, not much hope is there when GN starts bickering over how it all went, whose ‘fault’ it was, how us amateurs could have called it better than the manager?

Why? Why should GNs not have opinions on football? Some of us have been involved in and/or supported teams all our lives. We’re not all sat with our knitting y’know ?.

Agreed Franbern Silver Medal is brilliant. Celebrations indeed!

Polarbear2 Mon 12-Jul-21 08:25:46

So go to another thread then. It’s not infantile. It’s a sport that millions around the world love. If it’s not for you that’s ok. Go and leave us to our thread.

Franbern Mon 12-Jul-21 08:24:30

Silver medal position is pretty good - amazing really!!! Surely, in any sport, celebrations are in order for the runners-up as well as the actual winners.

Well after reading the various comments, everyone has a right to their opinion, wether they watch the game or not! If you don’t like what you are reading, then take your glasses off and switch off. It was a GAME and we have a winner and a LOSER and it happened that we got the latter. It all done and no apportioning blame will make a bit of difference. The media will be stringing this along for weeks, read if you wish! There’s always another day!!!!!!!

It seems to me not just football but there is foul online abuse everywhere. It is an overall problem and it needs to be tackled.

yggdrasil Mon 12-Jul-21 08:08:40

Last night, a country that had not won the Euro football for half a century finally managed to win.

Blinko Mon 12-Jul-21 08:00:21

Gareth Southgate and the England team have bought the country together. I am very proud of the team.
Those who are on social media using foul racist abuse are an absolute disgrace and as Boris said they should be ashamed of themselves.
These people on social media being abusive, and racist, are not fans, they use anything as an excuse to express there abhorrent views.

We're not regular fans but must agree this tournament and the team's excellent performance both on and off the pitch has brought this country some much needed heart and enjoyment after the terrible losses through Covid over the past year.

The online abuse is appalling. These thugs should be followed up and named and shamed.

Someone remarked

“Football came home, saw the state of the place and buggered off again”

Sensible football.
