Isn’t it time social media was brought under control - dreadful abuse after England football defeat.

Following England’s narrow defeat yesterday evening Rashford, Sancho and Saka were subjected to dreadful racist abuse on social media yesterday evening. This is happening in all walks of life where cowardly people go online to vent their spleen anonymously on others. Isn’t it time something was done to bring social media under control?

It’ll be a challenge, but the tech companies and authorities are starting to take action.

The abuse is, however, testament to the global nature of football and to the power of the English game. Brighton striker Neal Maupay received digital death threats after scoring against Arsenal in June 2020. The person who sent them was given a nine-month probation order this month. The 19-year-old perpetrator wasn’t from Sunderland or Somerset, but Singapore.

It must have come as a shock to him to get that knock on the door!

You can track someone’s IP address, that isn’t the same as giving up your identity. Tech companies need to crack down on hate speech and abuse, they’re choosing only to do so under certain circumstances. And the police don’t always act - I know far too many women who have had rape threats online that the police just brush off.

That's excellent news.
Exactly what should happen.

A few of the morons sending abusive messages have been named and shamed. One man in his 50's is a coach for a local boys football team. He texted Marcus Rashford telling him he was a freak and he should get back to his own country ( which is England as it happens). The thing that got me was that his children receive a free lunch during the school holidays courtesy of the meals scheme introduced by.....Marcus Rashford. You couldn't make it up.

I wonder how these people feel when their families, neighbours, colleagues hear about it?

It is so heartening that at last people are rejecting the false “culture wars” that Johnson pinched from mad Trump because they are beginning to recognise them for what they are. Based on lies and hate.

Interesting piece on BBC online news today “why was my tweet about football labelled abusive?” How do social platforms like Twitter decide when a violation has occurred? Some tweets get deleted and accounts suspended but others don’t even where a person has complained.

They use AI which can struggle with context and as they don’t reveal their system to anyone it is difficult to evaluate how effective it is. If AI doesn’t recognise sex or gender abuse because it hasn’t been put into it’s system then that abuse will continue.

Also AI doesn’t pick up emojis so if you swap a word with an emoji it will get through. Some of the racist tweets at our black football players made use of this.

I expect this will make me unpopular but....

Is ruining someone's life chances suitable retribution for a racist tweet? I think this is overreaction.

Its up there with no-platforming.

25Avalon Sun 18-Jul-21 12:26:20

Alegrias this is happening all the time unfortunately.

AmberSpyglass Sun 18-Jul-21 13:07:07

What university or employer is going to want someone stupid and bigoted enough to make a racist comment in a public place where potentially thousands of people can see it?

MissAdventure Sun 18-Jul-21 16:52:05

As I see it, the moron posting racist shite is the one who has ruined their potential career, nobody else.

25Avalon Sun 18-Jul-21 18:08:40

Every action has a consequence. I guess when people realise how serious the consequences are they will think twice before posting racist remarks.

Are we sure this was racist? The defacement of the Marcus Rashford mural was said not to be racist by the Greater Manchester Police.

MissAdventure Sun 18-Jul-21 19:22:26

I absolutely think it was.
Or perhaps "just" a hate crime?

Ellianne Mon 19-Jul-21 07:08:23

Happening all over again. Racist comments and monkey emojis about Lewis Hamilton. All to do with a racing incident yesterday at Silverstone.

25Avalon Mon 19-Jul-21 07:58:47

There was some controversy over Hamilton’s win when another driver Max Verstappen ended up off the track and in hospital. Verstappen then posted a tweet of Hamilton being direspectful and unsportsmanlike.

In view of previous posts how much of the subsequent racist abuse came from foreign countries? The abusers also used emojis which they knew would not be filtered out.

This may have started as plain hate but the abusers wanted to hurt Hamilton as much as possible so resorted to racism as well, so double abuse.

Ellianne Mon 19-Jul-21 08:08:11

Yes, 25Avalon, we watched the race and opinion of the crash is divided. Some say it was time Max was taught a lesson about being aggressive and bullying.

That aside, I agree the racist comments may well be from those outside the UK. The Grand Prix is an international sport.

Hate turning to racism, just because the team people support loses, seems to be a recurring theme. Maybe we should go back to teaching people how to be gracious in defeat and not resort to name calling.

Ellianne Mon 19-Jul-21 08:34:24

A lesson here

Mollygo Mon 19-Jul-21 08:50:04

Good point Ellianne, but where do we start, teaching people to be gracious in defeat and not resort to name calling? In Sport and politics, the media promotes the opposite of that with each inflammatory post.

25Avalon Mon 19-Jul-21 10:25:15

The answer is RESPECT

JaneJudge Mon 19-Jul-21 10:30:18

I am really conflicted about the uni offer being withdrawn. Even though I don't support/purport racism and have hopefully brought my own children up not to be racists. At 17 you could still be in a vacuum of your parents views as you haven't yet opened your mind or developed into an adult.

25Avalon Mon 19-Jul-21 14:19:10

Being rude and unpleasant to people is not a good trait regardless of your beliefs. Turning it into racial hatred is even worse and not acceptable. Look what happened to Ollie Robinson.

Then that can be a reminder to racist parents that they and their views aren't welcome anywhere.

Alegrias1 Mon 19-Jul-21 14:35:31

So is it OK to ruin a teenager's life chances because his parents might be racist?
