An old Christmas cracker joke; I asked my father what it meant, he said stick it on the Scrabble box, you'll understand it when you are older; its' still on the Scrabble box 60-odd years later:
"Our necessities are few but our wants are endless"
Our old school caretaker wrote in my autograph book when that was a craze:
"This above all, to thine own self be true"
From one of the "Katy" series of books by Susan Coolidge, read when I was a girl, about a mother who worried about her children's heads being knocked off on a barge going under a low bridge:
"She lived through a thousand disasters while dreading the one that never happened"
Often think of all three of those.
