This was due to a mistranslation. The "second" Goliath was in fact a brother of the first. (See 1 Chronicles 20 v 5).

So Elhanan slew Goliath's brother. David slew Goliath.
Further reading shows that when Elhanan slew Goliath's brother, it was at a time when David was already King, therefore it was two separate occasions.

an interesting supposition, possible fact about Goliath of David and Goliath fame. It is thought he had a tumour on his pituitary gland which not only caused his extreme height ( giant), but also caused tunnel vision which may have caused him to simply not see the stone coming his way from David.

Some 3000 years after the fact, David still takes credit for this. OK he was king and like most guys in charge wrote his own history. But a few chapters later on, the bible says Elhanan slew Goliath. There is a lot of 'commentary' trying to reconcile this, but there are enough other contradictions in the bible to say this is David taking the credit
