What a lovely kind man. I think a nice thank you card, a plant and replacement petrol.
Not wine, he might be a recovering alcoholic, not chocolates, he might be diabetic.
He was outside working in his garden so you know he enjoys that.

Giving certain things to people you don't know has to be carefully thought through, and not just to older folk.
Eg Plenty of people don't keep booze in the house
(Not that I speak from the experience of putting on Covid pounds!)

I would put the money for the petrol in a thank you card (petrol is costly). This is probably enough. Most kind folk just want to be appreciated with thanks............and possibly not be out of pocket.

A bottle of wine - he can always regift it if he doesn’t drink

Definitely replace replace the petrol! Not sure what else though.

As you don't know his tastes I'd go for a garden gift token. I'm sure he'd be pleased with that.

Yes grocery vouchers with a card with a thoughtful message sounds the ticket to me!

If he doesn't want payment for the petrol, maybe some grocery vouchers? Nice and generic. Or give him a can of petrol with a nice box of chocolates.

Perhaps a plant for his garden?
