we have no shops left locally now Debenhams has gone, are there any recommendations for the best online sites something in the M&S price range.

I've never found a substitute for East, the new version is much more fussy, like Monsoon. I used to buy Seasalt but don't like their styles much now.
The thing I find hard to find is a waterproof winter coat, not "puffy", and long enough to actually keep me dry. So many of them end mid-thigh rather than knee length or over. I had high hopes for an M&S "waterproof" coat which I bought last autumn, but it proved not to be waterproof in the recent heavy rain.
I sometimes bought M&S tops from Per Una, now gone. They sometimes have nice trousers too, but this year they seem to be too short, too wide or just dull colours. They don't even have the simple linen shirts which I've always worn oversized as overshirts.
I've bought absolutely no clothes this year, relying on my elderly simple East summer dresses.
I think that the most difficult thing is buying dressy clothes, I've bought Cerruti and Armani in the sales as their shapes are properly proportioned in large sizes, but so many seasons they don't have anything that I like. I think that I'll just be recycling.

The Outnet, which is the end of line section of net-a-porter is great. Huge reductions on clothes I couldn't dream of affording - just bought a fab cashmere jumper reduced from £180 to £30. Vestiaire collective has good quality second hand, as does Vinted and eBay if you're selective.

Seasalt have parted company with John Lewis as their commision rates were too high. They now sell through Marks and Spencer.

I have bought several things from Roman this year. They're very well made and sizing seems to be accurate, reasonably priced too and lightening speed delivery.

Also like Cotton Traders for simple everyday clothes.

I have bought some smart tops/tunics from Ulla Popken this year. Its a german company, but orders arrived in six days.
I had to return a couple of things until I got the right size, but their customer service is great. You return items to their Bedford unit.
I'm size 20/22 and 5ft 7ins, and find the length of their tops are really flattering(they cover your bum). Worth a try.

I so agree about East, it was my go to place for everything.
Things look ok on the new sight.
but as you say, it’s too fancy, I can’t imagine anything more annoying than sleeves that tie up at the wrist, or lots of dangling bits.
I bought a white dress there this year, which I do like, but ordered one in blue which looked the same style, but was cut tighter, and was much longer.

I see someone mentioned Masai. I have a Masai dress I have had for a few years. Strangers passing in the street say how lovely it is. Someone did only this week. Once a waiter in a restaurant said how much he liked my dress. This has never happened to me with any other piece of clothing. But over and over again with this one. Not every Masai piece, I dare say. But this one. That can happen, can’t it? A really special piece of clothing that is just right. I also like Toast because it will last for ever. Especially nightwear. I have a nightie that has more repairs than nightie. But Toast is in to this. Slow fashion. They do workshops to teach repairs or will repair their clothes for you. Genevieve Sweeney does wonderful knitwear. When I was young I just went down the market for cheap stuff but now I am old I need only a few pieces but good quality pieces.

Being a plus size I hate going clothes shopping so I buy my clothes either at Next or QVC so that I can try them on at home in the privacy of my bedroom and return them if they look horrible but at least only I will see

All on ebay recently and very pleased.

NoddingGanGan Mon 26-Jul-21 22:11:04

Like @Bamm I like Hobbs and Boden. Hobbs for work and Boden for leisure. Also like WhiteStuff, Crew Clothing and Schoffel.

Thank you ladies for the inspirational shopping ideas. I have been fortunate to lose weight over Lockdown and have just splurged quite a lot of money at Desigual. They have a really handy split payment system.
I must go and browse some more - one way to while away the hours while Insomnia keeps me awake!

Susangilley Tue 27-Jul-21 07:50:41

I like Fatface. I’ve shopped in store as well so know the sizes to buy. Never disappointed.

Herbie9 Tue 27-Jul-21 15:55:49

David Niepier's stylish clothes are made in this country, I believe, and although on the expensive side their catalogue is worth looking at.

I've ordered a Gudrun Sjõdén dress from the current sale, the first time I've ordered from them. For other newbies, please bear in mind that they ship from Sweden so you've to pay £3 for delivery, unless you pick up from a UPS collection point, and it's an extra £5 for orders under £40. Apparently if you use the Freepost label to return goods, £10 is taken from your refund (otherwise you can send it back by Royal Mail at their standard rates). It's been so long since I've had to pay for delivery and returns that I didn't realise this (my fault, I know) when I ordered the same dress in two sizes.

Unless I'm impressed beyond measure by my new frock, I'll be sticking to my favourites in future. This year it's been White Stuff, Joules, Weird Fish. I've gone off Boden a bit, but I think M & S have had some good Summer stuff, particularly their Ghost dresses.

If you end up sending things back you can recoup the tenner by "exchanging" for something of low value - I did this last year, "exchanged" a whole pile of "don't fits" for a pair of sale leggings which I knew would do.

How is the sizing on Gudrun Sjõdén? I know it's Lagenlook style, but is it true to size?

LtEve Tue 27-Jul-21 16:30:17

I buy a lot of clothes on eBay, I don’t mind good quality second hand stuff and have even managed to get some designer bits. If it doesn’t fit I’ve generally spent under £10 so am not too upset and I Freegle it or take it to the charity shop.

Roman are suitable for over60s

Is there a special over 60s uniform that I don't know about?

Fit varies by style so you need to know the different descriptions eg figure fit, generous etc. There's a general info section on the website and then each garment has its own measurements for the medium size and there's another chart to tell you what to add or deduct for other sizes.

But a good way is to join one one of the many Gudrun Sjoden groups on Facebook that are customer led. People are happy to measure their purchases if asked.

Marydoll Wed 28-Jul-21 07:38:06

Riggie, thank you for taking the time to respond.

I have found this thread very informative.I wouldn’t know Debenhams and Bon Marche were on line if I hadn’t looked. Should have done really as I now think I remember hearing somewhere had bought up the on line side of Debenhams !Also I hadn’t heard of Otrium and Gudrun Sjoden which look good.
Ambrose Wilson is another on line site I like, don’t know if it has been mentioned.

GillT57 Wed 28-Jul-21 13:28:48

Seasalt is my go to, and also Adini for dresses and tunics, really good quality for the price. Boden styles are nice, but the fabric quality not as good as it once was. Lands End for every day t shirts, maybe be initially more expensive than say M&S, but some of mine are onto their fifth summer. I can't remember the last time I bought anything from M&S. I have a couple of beautiful long tunic tops from Sahara which are a few years old, still look like new and go beautifully with a pair of white trousers from Lands End. Lands End for jeans and casual trousers; again watch out for the 40% off snap sales, they are then great value, and I can order with confidence knowing they will fit well.

Thanks, NotSpaghetti, I'll look into this, when/if my new Gudrun frocks actually get here. Nine days since my order, the estimated delivery date keeps being moved on. sad

I love roman Originals their customer service is really good. They have a group on face book which is helpful, people review their purchases and post pictures if they feel confidant enough and give good information i.e if your big busted go up a size. Etc
