To see that Mawbe had posted a birthday message to me on Wednesday 4th August!

I had quite a few surprises that day!smile When Mr P opened the front door to let Oliver Sprout in (he was rather a soggy moggy, his own fault for for going out in the rain. He does it because he likes being rubbed dry!)

But I digress. Mr P said "I think you'd better come and have a look. So being in an affable sort of mood, I did.

Well, you could have knocked me down with a Tena Lady wrapper!

There was a cluster of balloons with helium numbers 6 &3 attached, a rather small balloon arch (handy if you were expecting a visit from a troop of little people, which I believe is the correct term to use, and a good hostess should always be ready to cater for all types of guest. None arrived though.confused ) and a beautiful plant.

Later a friend arrived with a delicious apple and almond tray bake, complete with candles and sparklers! grin, then another friend with flowers and champagne!

I had lots of cards (more than usual) and Mr P cooked a delicious mealsmile

It really was a fabulous birthday, which was great, because you see it will be my last.

I was diagnosed with terminal cancer back in mid December and despite the best efforts of all staff involved, the prognosis given during my last consultation in July, was that I had about 3 months sad

I won't bore you with details of the various treatments I had, but will reassure you that I'm still pottering about and enjoying what I do.smile

Please don't inundate me with PM's. I would feel that I had to respond to each one,and my time and energy have to be used carefully these days (quite interesting planning ones own funeral though wink ) but I will read any posts on this thread.

With love, and every good wish for a successful gammon at Christmas!

I did mean to add though, that I’m so pleased that you had a lovely birthday celebration ??.

Bellanonna Fri 06-Aug-21 22:08:17

Dear Phoenix, I don’t remember the Cmas gammon story but I’ll always remember you unwrapping a present from your DH and finding a new toilet seat. And he was being serious!
God bless you Phoenix.

Shinamae Fri 06-Aug-21 22:07:17

I don’t really don’t know what to say…….???????

Phoenix Loved you posts for a long time in my previous golf related incarnation. Peace and love to you. Xx

B9exchange Fri 06-Aug-21 22:03:32

I too had missed your postings and cheered up when I saw your name, only to read such sad news. GN won't be the same without you, you have been making me laugh ever since I joined. I too remember the train loo incident!

We are all rooting for you, and you will be in our prayers. Hope you will continue to post as and when you can, thoughts with you and MrP.

cornergran Fri 06-Aug-21 22:02:17

You’re a true inspiration phoenix. Your post made me smile and then shed a tear. I know you’ll take as much enjoyment as you can from each day, a brave woman. My love to you and your husband.

Dear Phoenix I was so pleased to see your post after all this time, then as I read further, shocked and saddened. I do admire your "attitude" and humour, facing up to this situation.

Your posts over the years have been one of the best bits of Gransnet for me. You were kind and supportive to me (in a previous GN life).

You leave a great legacy of funny stories. I'm sure we will all Curse the Gammon at Christmas, and drink a toast to you. Lots of love

Mapleleaf Fri 06-Aug-21 21:49:54

Oh phoenix, no words but thinking of you ?.

Chewbacca Fri 06-Aug-21 21:46:59

Love you Phoenix. I'll be forever grateful that you've been my pal; too many happy, ridiculous and funny things to post here but will always be remembered and with me forever. Cx

Scribbles Fri 06-Aug-21 21:32:44

phoenix, I think of you every time I use a train loo and probably always will. Thank you for all the smiles- and occasional shrieks of laughter - your postings have given me over the years.

You are loved; you will be missed but go in peace, knowing that, whatever your own troubles, you have brought sunshine to so many.

Luckygirl Fri 06-Aug-21 21:28:07

What a splendid post - an inspiration to us all. The power of humour; and the joy of writing talent is all there for the reader. Thank you.

I will look forward to your posts - and Happy Belated Birthday wishes. xx

phoenix - so sad to hear your news - there are no words but love and prayers winging your way flowers

phoenix Fri 06-Aug-21 20:46:09

Ah, Deedaa it's been a long time since I had an "incident" with under wear on a train!

My most recent job didn't require travelling or smart suits but I always wore under wear!

BlueSapphire Fri 06-Aug-21 20:45:37

So sad to hear your news. May all your days be filled with love, sunshine and happiness. xx

Blinko Fri 06-Aug-21 20:43:35

I hope you can enjoy the rest of your time with your familyy. You will be greatly missed on GN. Your birthday sounds lovely, heartwarming. Wishing you a soft landing flowers

Septimia Fri 06-Aug-21 20:41:07

Really sorry to hear your news phoenix. Like others, I have missed and shall miss your posts. Delighted, though, that you had a brilliant birthday.

When my cousin's daughter was planning her funeral, she insisted that they serve really good bacon rolls at the 'bunfight' afterwards. They brought smiles and much appreciation. I hope you plans will include some surprises!

Ethelwashere1 Fri 06-Aug-21 20:39:37

So sorry to hear your news. I remember you from way back when i was etheltbags. Glad you enjoyed your birthday, i hope your treatment is not too bad and you have some lovely days ahead with your family. X

midgey Fri 06-Aug-21 20:31:38

Phoenix you haven’t told us the colour of your wigs…..somehow, having enjoyed your posts, I cannot imagine they are of the staid variety! Glad your birthday was good!

Pittcity Fri 06-Aug-21 20:30:27

Sounds like you had a wonderful birthday Phoenix.
May I add my virtual hug to the humans and felines in the Phoenix family.

Grannynannywanny Fri 06-Aug-21 20:30:25

I’m more of a reader than a poster since I joined 18 months ago and I always enjoy reading your humorous posts Phoenix. I noticed your recent absence and hoped maybe you were just having a break.

I’m so sad to read your post this evening. Wishing you love and continued strength. You are a very special lady who is much loved on Gransnet.

Juliet27 Fri 06-Aug-21 20:30:25

I read threads more than I add to them and always enjoyed your amusing messages. I’m so very sorry to hear your news but am looking forward to reading more posts from you now you’re on here again. What wonderful warm comments from grans proving just how much you’re loved. x

Calendargirl Fri 06-Aug-21 20:26:59

No words, just flowers.

Redhead56 Fri 06-Aug-21 20:24:38

You have a lovely sense of humour and have made many of us smile. Every time I cook gammon I will think of you ?

GrannyLaine Fri 06-Aug-21 20:21:57

I, like others, was so very happy to see you posting again but had no idea of the journey you have travelled. Your humour and your natural talent for putting a comical spin on the most mundane of domestic events made GN a much better place, even if it did get us into bother. I send you and Mr P, Oliver Sprout & Minnie enough love and fortitude to help you through the weeks ahead flowers

Grandmadinosaur Fri 06-Aug-21 20:18:48

I am so sorry to read this post and have a tear in my eye. I feel like I’d love to give you a big hug . I’m quite new here too but the impression I get is that you are a larger than life character. It sounds like you’ve taken the cards you’ve been dealt on the chin like a trouper.
You had a wonderful Birthday nothing less than you deserve.
I’m wishing you lots of love and enjoy every day God blesses you with surrounded by loved ones. ??
